The Twickenham Vacation House is centered on our 1000+ acre working ranch in a secluded and scenic valley. Upon entering the house, you encounter breath taking views through floor to ceiling windows of the surrounding mountains, alfalfa fields, orchard and river. The Sutton Mountain Wilderness area is located directly behind the house and access to the John Day River for fishing, rafting, tubing and swimming is in front. Out back beside the 100 year old smoke house is a barn where you can keep your horses for trail riding. The shop/garage contains river toys (2 canoes, kayak, tubes), trailer, and plenty of space for bicycles and/or vehicles.
This "fly-in" house is on a private airstrip (04OR) with parking right along the driveway. Permission must be obtained before using airstrip. A courtesy car is available.
The main floor is open concept featuring 20 foot ceilings, skylights, a wood burning stove, a fireplace, and walls of windows. There is a spacious, fully equipped kitchen, large dining table, elegant living room and comfortable family room. Three large sliding doors lead to an expansive deck where you can take in the fresh air and tranquility, grill and dine.
All four bedrooms have scenic views, three with deck/patio access. There are three full bathrooms. The master bathroom was just completely remodeled. The rec room has a wood burning stove where you can hang out, watch movies in surround-sound on Blu-ray and play x-Box 360. Sliding doors lead out to a lower outside patio and deck with additional seating, table with fire pit, lawn and hammock under the birch trees.
During your stay, you will enjoy fine furnishings, bedding, and kitchen ware. For all of your groceries, there is a walk in refrigerator with tap for your beer keg if you desire as well as an upright freezer. High-Speed satellite internet and land line are provided for your communication needs as there is no cell phone service in the valley.
The Twickenham Valley on the John Day river is a beautiful location at the center of Wheeler County. The basalt layers form rimrocks that provide dramatic scenery and numerous seasonal waterfalls. The river is famous for small-mouth bass fishing . The Sutton Mountain Wilderness area abuts the south side of the property with the Horse Mt. Wilderness a couple of miles east. Twickenham is centrally located between the three units comprising the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Painted Hills unit is closest--just over the mountain south of the house, or if you choose to drive, about 15 miles around the mountain.
