Property type studio
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Studio cottage, centrally located.

A private, separate structure, studio cottage situated at the back of a one acre property. Vaulted wood ceilings with exposed beams and optional dim mood lighting are two wonderful features.

Garden views surround from the 384sqft. lanai, giving you peace and privacy. Included on the lanai is a hammock for 2 (up to 500 lbs.), a portable gas BBQ grill that can be taken with you for day trips, patio furniture with mosquito net umbrella cover, wheeled cooler, beach mats, beach towels, snorkels and masks, beach chairs, 2 boogie boards, large beach umbrella and 2 large umbrellas for rainy days. The lanai is 8 feet wide and runs along two sides of the cottage, extending the living space. A roof overhang of 4 feet protects the lanai on rainy days so you can still enjoy being outside without getting wet.

There are many sounds of nature all around us, primarily Hawaiian dove, coqui frogs at night, crickets, birds, and other frogs. We have small hobby farms on each side of us, so you will also hear their dogs, ducks, goats, chickens and roosters. I realize roosters can be very annoying if you are not used to them, so I have two fans in the unit that can be used to help muffle the sounds. As of March 14, 2017 there is also a sound machine with 10 different sound scenarios that is very effective in covering the roosters crowing. The neighbors have also lessened the number of roosters as well. Roosters are very common throughout the Puna district - I've even heard them inside the Hilo airport post office! If roosters are a concern you want to avoid, be sure to ask your potential hosts about their own or neighboring roosters.

Inside sleeps up to 4 with a queen-size bed and full-size sleeper/love seat. The sleeper is a very comfortable foam mattress with no bar to jab you in the back all night. It can fit up to 3 medium-sized people as a love seat, 2 as a bed. The queen bed is medium firmness with a center reinforcement for back support and I've added a foam/memory foam pad for added comfort.

Dish satellite TV and internet are included. The TV is a 39" LED/HDTV with 120 channels.

Full kitchen with gas stove, oven, refrigerator. It is fully stocked with pots and pans, utensils for eating and cooking, rice maker, microwave, coffee maker and coffee, blender, bagel sized toaster, 25 spices, and purified water dispenser. Dishes are a service for 4, including plates, bowls, wooden salad bowls, large coffee mugs, glasses, wine glasses, shot glass, and kiddie cups.

The bathroom has a shower stall, pedestal sink, laundry basket, plenty of towels, hand towels and wash cloths. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash and baby wash are also provided. The medicine cabinet contains a First Aid Kid, peroxide, and various OTC medications for headache, allergy and itching. Our property also features tankless hot water heaters, so you will not run out of hot water.

You are welcome to use the washer and dryer located in the carport. Laundry soap, bleach, and dryer sheets are provided as well.

We provide the book "Hawaii: The Big Island Revealed" so you don't miss any off-the-beaten-path places of interest.

Although our location is central to Hilo, the Volcano and the coastlines of lower Puna, this is the BIG ISLAND - it is not The Island of Convenience, lol. In other words, there is no getting out of long drives no matter where you stay. But the drives are along long stretches of rural highways with very few stop signs or stop lights, so it isn't as long as it seems in terms of time. If you're here long enough, you'll get used to it!

Getting here is super easy, and on paved roads the whole way. We look forward to seeing you!

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns that I may not have addressed here.

About Karla Nava

We are Joel and Karla Nava. I'm 53 and he's 48. Joel and I have been married for 20years and we have one son between us, Lakota, who is 19. I also have 3 other adult children in the mainland and 5 grandchildren. Joel works in I/T and I have been a homemaker for the past 10 years.

We took our first vacation to Kauai in 2006 and decided then that we had to live in Hawaii - but which island? So from there we vacationed on Maui in 2010, and Oahu and the Big Island in 2013. We decided that the Hilo side of the Big Island would be home. After a lot of saving up, we returned to the Big Island in Feb 2015 to purchase our new home!

Karla Nava purchased this studio in 2015

Why Karla Nava chose Keaau

We chose this property because it is central to Hilo, Volcanoes National Park and Pahoa. It also had a separate guest cottage that we could turn into a vacation rental for extra income. It is unique in that it has 4 separate structures on the property - the main house, a detached carport, a work shop, and the cottage in the back. (The work shop will not be used while guests are visiting.) We love the tropical lushness and the affordability factor compared to the other islands.

What makes this studio unique

Unique benefits for this location is being so close to an active volcano and having 11 of the 13 climate zones right here on one island. You don't have to travel far to be in a whole new world and we love that. If you wake up to endless rain in Hilo, go spend the day on the Kona side or make your way above the clouds and watch the sunset on Mauna Kea! Tip: You will be told that you need a 4WD vehicle to go to the summit of Mauna Kea and this is true, but only after you've reached the Visitor Center at the 9000ft. level. You can drive a non-4WD up to the Visitor's Center but the ascent can be very rough on vehicles, so I recommend that you stop and rest the car every mile or two for about 5 or 10 minutes. The Visitors Center is at the 6th mile. Things to see and do at this level are walking a path through the rare silversword plants and hiking to the top of a cinder cone hill to get a view of Mauna Loa, the clouds below and the sunset. The Visitor's Center also has a gift shop and hot drinks for sale.

As for the property itself, we fell in love with the spacious lanais that allow you to enjoy sitting outside in the cool breeze and just taking in all the sounds of nature no matter if it is the heat of the day or if it is pouring rain. All of our dinners are had out on the lanai! Another great feature is the tankless hot water heaters - no running out of hot water!

Loved everything about it!!!

  • 5 of 5

Location of this house is nice as it is away from all the bustle of the island. Everything we needed was there ready for us. The house was super clean, extra linens, beach towels, beach gear, coffee, eggs, wine, and so much more! Most people mention something about the chickens, however, I did not seem to find them a problem. However, there is a sound machine and 2 fans if you do need something to drown the sounds

Karla makes this house so welcoming and she is very sweet. If you need anything she is willing to help out as she is only one text away. She really did think of it all! I couldn't of asked for a better host!!!

I highly recommend staying here if you want someplace "away from it all" to relax!

Secluded retreat near to activities. The best!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this little cottage in the woods. Karla has thought of absolutely everything you could need. Well maintained, well organized. It’s just the sweetest little dwelling. Between Keanu and Pahoa, 20 minutes from Hilo. Perfect.

We had terrible weather and still will remember this place with fondness. Amazing value compared to other 2 places we stayed on this trip. Thank you Karla for having created this special place.

Comfortable cool Hawaii setting

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for two nights. Communication was excellent. I made mistake and booked one more night than we needed and our host refunded me after I notified. The home is in the back of the lot in a beautiful landscaped backyard. Great outdoor space with hammock, bbq and eating area. Indoor is comfortable, incredible clean, and is equipped for a comfortable stay. Roosters in the morning didn’t bug us, the host was thoughtful to provide a sound machine (we chose the ocean setting) and we also had ear plugs that we used if we needed. Bed was comfortable and temperature was just right. We stayed here because we wanted to stay somewhere in a more “rural” setting and it was under an hour from volcano national park. Also the price was right. We ate in Pahoa both nights (15 min away) since the restaurants there had a bit more character and the food was pretty good.

Condo with all the Details Covered!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent 3 nights here and enjoyed our stay. Lovely condo on the east side of island, very close to Volcano National Park, Hilo, and Puna. When we arrived we were welcomed by the owner Karla. She has thought of everything including grill w/ extra propane, drinking water, eggs, butter, coffee, and the basic necessities. In her binder, she had suggestions on where to explore and also included grocery store discount cards which were a plus! We felt very safe at the property and was very quiet at night (..well the occasional rooster...but hey, it's Hawaii). Would recommend! Hope to return in the future!

Relaxing Base for Exploring!

  • 4 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay at this delightful cottage! It was very comfortable and private, beautifully decorated, and spotless. The wrap-around lanai was a great spot to eat breakfast and watch the birds. There are many chickens and roosters around (on neighboring properties) but we thought their sounds were pleasant and entertaining. They did not interfere with our sleep at all, but Karla has provided a noise machine and fans for guests that find them disturbing....

There are many interesting places to visit within an hour's drive of the cottage, especially around Hilo. The main highways are busy in this area, but the country roads are stunningly beautiful. A black sand beach is not too far away, and we saw many sea turtles cavorting in the surf there! Karla provides snorkeling gear, beach towels, etc. for beach-going guests. We would spend the mornings exploring, and then enjoy relaxing afternoons at the cottage. Highly recommended for anyone looking for something different --for us it was so much better than an expensive resort--and you can do your laundry for free!

Definitely not serene

  • 2 of 5

Karla is a thoughtful host and has tried to create a welcoming environment. Unfortunately the place is surrounded by noisy neighbors (who partied til well after 2 am when I was there), roosters that call and yell all day starting at 5 am, and outdoor dogs that bark nonstop. The place is really sweet if you aren’t bothered by these nuisances

Owner's Response: Unfortunately for this person, yes, there was a party going on as stated. It is not a regular occurrence - it was the 2nd time in 2 1/2 years. My ad discloses the roosters and dogs. Please don't choose to stay here and then low-star me for them. While they are annoying to some and can seem like the noise is non-stop, this simply isn't true. My ad also states that I provide 2 stand fans that can be used to effectively muffle the noises at night, as well as a high-quality sound machine with 10 different sound scenarios. She told me after her first night of 2 that she didn't see the sound machine and I don't know if she tried to use it or the fans the 2nd night. I have tested them both and they are both effective at muffling the animal noises. I do go out of my way to take care of my guests and make sure that their time here is pleasurable. If you need something I haven't provided I am known to go out on the spot and get it for you. I also provide extras like spices, coffee, half & half, a half dozen eggs, sugar, flour and beach items such as snorkels, towels, chairs, and umbrellas. As a thank-you for staying with me, I also include a bottle of white wine (will substitute if you request it) and chocolate covered macadamia nuts.
