About Mary Schwabe

My husband and I are from Portland, Oregon. Paul is an Oregon native and went to college at Santa Clara, U of Oregon, and graduated from U of Oregon Law School. I grew up in Indiana, I went to a girls' boarding school in Massachusetts and U of Michigan, where I received a BA in English Lit. Later I attended Portland State where I earned a teaching certificate. My husband is a real estate broker and I am a retired high school English teacher. We live right on the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington. We love the outdoors and enjoy travelling to NY and spending time in the Catkills. The proximity to NYC is another attraction as well as being with our family, including four grandchildren, children, sisters, and many nieces and nephews. We have several family gatherings at our chalet and my sister's property just 4 miles away.

Mary Schwabe purchased this chalet in 1995

Why Mary Schwabe chose Eldred

We discovered our chalet when we visited my sister in the Catskills, where she has an old converted barn, pond, and large lot. We fell in love with the area and could not believe that such a place could be so close to NYC and our daughter and grandchildren. The lake reminded me of my grandparents' house is the woods, on a beautiful small lake in northern Wisconsin. I wanted my grandchildren to have the same fond memories as I had growing-up__swimming, fishing, canoeing and playing card games with my cousins who we only saw in the summers at my grandparents' cabin.

What makes this chalet unique

Wildlife in abundance: eagles, osprey, woodpeckers, owls, flocks of wild turkeys and geese, bears, deer and little red foxes are there to entertain you. Spectacular sunrises and clear starry nights enhance a feeling of peace and well-being. If its cold and rainy you can build a cozy fire. You can take long hikes along the lake or pick blueberries along a nearby road in July. You can see a play in Forestburgh, go to the movies in Matamoras, play golf in several golf courses, attend an outdoor concert in Bethel Woods, sunbathe or read a book on the dock or go to the Barryville Farmers' Market on the weekend. What's not perfect?

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Paul, Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us over Memorial Day weekend. We loved the house and took full advantage of it over these past several days. We were fortunate enough to have beautiful weather over the weekend- we could be seen on the dock all day reading and lounging, with an occasional jump in the lake or row boat journey to cool off from the strong sun. At night, our competitive natures emerged during multiple rounds of Cranium. We look forward to more trips to 147 Barker Road. Many thanks again for your hospitality.

Tasteful, stylish, comfortable, amazing lake

  • 5 of 5

House with its own colorful identity which will embrace you with warmth and comfort making forget about the city.

Lake is as magical as hundreds years old pine forest that surrounds it.

Truly amazing.

Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Cozy Winter Snuggles

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I stayed here over a weekend in peak winter. So, while we didn't get to explore the lake, we were happy to stay snuggled up inside the house with a roaring fire and play some of the supplied board games. Luckily the owner supply plenty of firewood. ❤️We loved the furnishing in the home, and the host was extremely nice when I called let them know we got in ok. Highly recommend this home to others.

Charming

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a winter weekend in the house that overlooks a beautiful frozen lake. Our plans were to relax and go out to eat our meals, but we had trouble finding a place to eat. We ended up going to a small market, not far from the house and buying some groceries. There is internet access, but we had trouble accessing our apps and making phone calls on our cell phones, however we could get text messages out. So if your are looking for a place to unhook and relax this place is appropriate.

Owner's Response: Thank you. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Our cell phone reception is usually just fine. We have never had guests not able to use their cells. I am sorry about that. Perhaps the weather was a factor. Molly SCHWABE

Great New Year weekend! Lovely, warm home! Wonderful owners Paul and Mary!

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything. Stylish wood furnishing is so nice! We enjoyed fireplace very much at these cold New Year's days! Clean, comfortable beds and kitchen with all that we needed for our stay. There is stunning nature outside and lake view from the windows! We were ice fishing and caught some nice fishes.

Paul is very helpful, caring, respond at any questions very fast and Mary helped us a lot to connect WiFi fast. They left some extras for us even ( water, charcoal...), in case we forget it. They are very nice people!

We had a very good time and dream to come back soon for longer stay!

Thank you Paul and Mary for sharing your charming home with us!

Peace and quiet with a beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Paul and Mary's lake house and we loved it both times. There is plenty of fishing in the lake, either from the dock or you can take the rowboat out in the lake. Sitting on the deck in the back you have a beautiful view of the lake and we plenty of wildlife in the yard. For a nice peaceful getaway it is a great spot.

The area is definitely rural, many hills and small lakes and ponds. It is never crowded and there are many activities available, especially if you like the outdoors. Artsy communities such as Barryville and Narrowsburg offer cultural experiences, Bethel Woods is a great attraction, the Delaware River is beautiful and scenic, plus it offers rafting, canoeing, tubing and fishing. Opening in February is the glamorous casino in nearby Monticello.
