Towns and services: The main town, Ganges, is in the centre of the island. It has two grocery stores: Thrifty’s downtown and The Country Grocer just north of downtown. A government liquor store is located downtown and there’s a private liquor store beside The Country Grocer. Ganges has restaurants, bookstores, clothing shops, galleries, hardware stores, a hospital, an indoor swimming pool, gas stations, and many other services.
At the south end is the village of Fulford Harbour, and in the northwest part of the island the tiny village of Vesuvius. Both have some restaurants and services.
Saturday market in Ganges: A wonderful craft and food market happens in Ganges on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm in the waterfront park area. Well worth a visit! There’s also a smaller market on Tuesdays.
Swimming: St. Mary Lake is great for swimming. The public beach access is about a 15-minute walk (three-minute drive) from the cabin. Take Whims Road to Northend Road, turn left on Northend Road. Just past Lakeside Gardens Resort is a small beach with public access to the lake.
There are several other swimming lakes (e.g., Cusheon Lake, Stowell Lake, Blackburn Lake). For ocean swimming, check out the beach in Vesuvius or head to Beddis Beach.
Hiking: There are lots of lovely hikes on Salt Spring. A particularly nice place to walk is at the south end of the island at Ruckle Provincial Park.
Studio tours: Salt Spring is home to many artists and craftspeople who open their studios for tours. You can get a studio tour map at the Visitor Information Centre.
Festivals and special events: Check at the Visitor Information Centre for any festivals or special events happening during your stay.
Cinema: Salt Spring has a first-run movie theatre, about a seven-minute drive from the cabin, in the old community hall. It’s located at the corner of Northend Road and Upper Ganges Road, just at the turn to Vesuvius.
Fernwood: About a half-hour walk (or a seven-minute drive) from the cabin is the Fernwood Café, a good restaurant for breakfast or lunch. Go up our road and turn onto Maliview, follow it to Walker Hook Road, and then turn left. Soon you’ll see a long red government dock. The café is across from the dock, at the foot of Fernwood Street. The dock is fun to go out on, and the beach there is great for low tide walking (moon snails and sand dollars).
Local farm vegetables: Bon Acres Farm at the top of Lepage Road has a farm stand selling vegetables and eggs. You can walk through the woods or drive there from the cabin.
