About the property

3 Bedroom 3.5 Bath Home With A Pool In The Historic Center Of San Miguel

This beautiful 300 year old colonial home is on one of the best streets in the historic center of San Miguel de Allende, just 2 blocks from the "Jardin" or main square. The best shops and restaurants in San Miguel are just steps from the front door.

The house is one story with all of the rooms surrounding a central courtyard with a swimming pool.

The house includes 3 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms:

The first bedroom has a king size bed, a fireplace and a bathroom en-suite.

The second bedroom has 2 twin beds, a fireplace and a bathroom en-suite.

The third bedroom has a queen bed, a fireplace and a bathroom en-suite.

The half bath is just off the pool, near the library and outdoor living area.

The house has a large living/dining room with 16 foot (5meter) wood beamed ceilings and a wood burning fireplace.

The library which adjoins this space has the same high wood beamed ceilings, a partners desk and a sitting area for watching TV.

The kitchen is well appointed and has a breakfast table.

There is an outdoor "sala" (living room) with a wood burning fireplace, overlooking the central patio and pool .

The central patio has a dining table near the heated pool.

The house is staffed with a maid 6 days a week and a part time pool/garden man. In addition to keeping the house clean, the maid can cook one meal a day. Groceries are not included but she will do the shopping for you if you would like.

We have created an Owner's Guide to San Miguel for our guests which lists our favorite shops and restaurants as well as other information. It is in PDF format and is sent once a booking is confirmed. A printed copy will be in the home as well.

About Rob Lewis

I am an architect and my partner is an interior designer. We bought our first home in San Miguel in 1988, and have been living and working here full time since 1992. We have built and remodeled many homes for ourselves and clients both here and in the USA. We travel extensively and enjoy collecting art and objects from all over the world to bring back to our homes in San Miguel, San Francisco and Vermont. We also enjoy good food and wine, and spend a great deal of time cooking and entertaining.

Why Rob Lewis chose Zona Centro

We fell with San Miguel on our first trip to visit friends in 1984. The whole town is an historical landmark, which means that even with development the colonial center can never be changed. It is such an easy walking city and so picturesque. From our first trip we fantasized about buying one of the many colonial houses. Our dream came true just 3 years later and we've never looked back.

What makes this house unique

We chose this property after having lived a bit further out of the colonial center. It was the classic fantasy of a typical colonial home with a beautiful patio in a central courtyard. We completely remodeled the house and added the pool. The property had been a doctors office and a kindergarten and had not been lived in for many years. We were able to do all of the upgrades that we wanted while still respecting the colonial integrity of the property.

Notes:
The house includes a maid/cook that works 6 days a week from 9am -4pm. Her hours can be flexible; she start later or leave earlier if you would like. She can cook one meal per day as well as keep up with the general house keeping. She is happy to shop and cook for you, but you pay for all groceries. If you would like more, we will gladly arrange it for you.

Remarkable place to stay

We so enjoyed this home. Easy walk to the Jardin and shops in the Centro. Home is very comfortable with the courtyard and pool. The best part is the cook to preshop and cook one meal a day, choice of breakfast or lunch. The menu is extensive and she will provide enough for leftovers for snacks. All the meals are delicious. Several fireplaces and seating around them provide various places to gather and relax. We chose to be here in January so pay attention to the weather for your comfort and bring clothes accordingly. Mattress warmers on the beds was a life saver and kept us warm during a freezing cold front. Owners are very accommodating to have everything in order for our arrival, including arranging a driver to and from the airport and a Sunday afternoon excursion. We will definitely return. Thank you for a great place to celebrate anniversaries with great friends.

An Experience

It’s a different world there. Glad we went. The house is a very nice house. Great location to the “Jardin” the center of the old town. We were able to walk to everything we wanted to do. There was some entertainment every night we were there.

The negatives were: It was much colder there than we expected and the house is really not set up to handle that. Each room have fireplaces but they had a tendency to smoke so we found ourselves having to use the Gas Starters for some heat. There was suppose to be little portable heaters in each of the bedroom baths but it was short one. We each did have Electric Mattress pads which helped. It was too cold to use the pool. Our Maid, Isabela wore her coat most of the day. There is no heat in the Kitchen so we had to light the gas stove top and oven to be able to use the kitchen. One night it got down to 29 degrees. And all nights were very cool. Days were cool and Need to bundle up til midday. But when the sun goes down, it’s cold.

His house Manuel needs updated with up to date info including phone numbers of Drivers. The house phone that was supposed to be able to use to call the USA was not user friendly so that didn’t happen.

Isabela cooked 2 meals for us and they were very good. She kept our rooms cleaned and washed any clothes me left for her in our bathroom clothes basket. The only thing I feel needs to be done, is that she doesn’t work on Sunday and she does not leave enough wash cloths, towels to carry you through the weekend

We are glad we went. Would recommend the house to people. Had lots of character but just be aware of the time of year and go prepared for cooler than expected.

We had lots of good food, great restaurants.

If you have breathing problems, this is a hard place. It’s approximately 6500 feet elevation, so the air is thin.

The streets are cobblestone and hard to walk on and you are having to walk up or down. Very little to no level ground

Lots of good shopping with local arts and crafts. People were very friendly and from all nationalities. Lots of Snow birds that stay here in the Winter

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry that San Miguel was experiencing a cold snap during this guest's stay. It can happen in December and January so guests should come prepared. I am also sorry that one of the bath heaters was missing. The staff will replace it right away. We have to give the maid one day per week off so there is nothing we can do about that. However, she normally leaves two sets of towels for each guest which last until Monday. This is the first time I have heard of this problem, and I will speak to our maid right away to make sure she always leaves two sets for each guest. The long-distance phone has always worked fine for other guests. However, I have updated the instructions in the house manual to make the instructions more clear. We also updated the driver's phone numbers. We have a full-time manager who is available 24 hours a day to answer any guest questions and meet any special needs. We appreciate the feed back from this guest and will do our best to improve our service.

The good and the bad

The good:

Very nice property. Clean, right downtown, comfortable, with great little pool.

The bad:

It was very warm, and the bedrooms don't cool off at night. No cross-ventilation, and the big loud fan just doesn't get the job done.

Also, I got a little bothered that we were asked to tip the maid (who was great) 5% of the cost of our four-night stay ($100). I think when you pay American prices to stay somewhere, the owner should pay American wages, and not hit up the guests to do what the owner should do. I usually tip the maids down there at least $100, but I suspect that thus I am paying the maid more than her employer does. Not my job.

Nice kitchen for cooking, but no spices, foil, etc.

Anyway, nice place, nice stay.

Owner's Response: We always appreciate good feedback! The house does not have air conditioning, as we disclose on our listing. Usually, summers are not too hot, at least after mid June. This is the first time we have had a complaint about the heat. However, we are working to see what could be done during the few months that are hot, May and part of June. I can assure all guests that we pay our staff a very decent wage plus all of their medical and retirements benefits. Over the years our guests have asked what is customary for tipping the staff. They want to be generous but not over do it. 5% is the guideline offered by the major rental agencies who have worked in vacation rentals in San Miguel for the last 20 years. However, as it is a tip it is not mandatory. Just as in a restaurant, it is at the discretion of the guest. If anyone has any doubts or questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
