Our sweet, vintage 1946 cottage is part of a small, tree-filled enclave of cottages that began as 'Walter's Cottages', was later an artists' colony, and is now called 'Seabreeze'. The cottage offers visitors a unique opportunity to 'go back' to a slower paced time, intentionally unplug from the internet, and reconnect with some of the rest of what modern life has to offer. We call the cottage 'Teach na Shoals', which is Scots-Gaelic for 'Place of the Shoals'. There is a six night minimum stay; we regret that we cannot accommodate travelers who are looking to book a shorter stay than this.
You'll be welcomed to the cottage by the sight of the hydrangea bushes and the sound of the white shoal driveway. The cottage has been lovingly decorated in the style and colors of the era in which it was built. Kitchen, living room, and eating area are all one space, with a beautiful vaulted ceiling of cedar and skylights. A drop leaf 'kitchen table' seats four. The bedroom has a full size bed, dresser, and closet. An open loft above the main room offers sleeping space for up to two more people who are old enough and up for climbing the ladder! An air conditioner in the loft and ceiling fans in the main room and bedroom cool us off on the hottest days of Summer. The bathroom has a sink, toilet, and shower, and of course there's also an outdoor shower out back! The sunny, enclosed front porch is the perfect place for coffee in the morning, listening to crickets in the evening, and birdsong and reading anytime. Our back patio has a table for six and a Weber charcoal grill; it faces a large, lightly wooded area. There's also a comfy hammock in the back, beckoning you to relax. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO TV OR WIFI SERVICE IN THE COTTAGE...we love it that way, as do our guests, but not everyone looking for a rental cottage does. Bring your laptop and enjoy our DVDs- or your own- if you want a movie night after a day at the beach! The cottage is equipped with a portable Bluetooth audio system to hook you up to pandora or other sites, for inside or outside listening. The entrance to Hammonasset State Park is .3 miles from the cottage. Hammonasset has three different beaches to choose from, walking trails, a nature center, and more. Several other nearby town beaches are also open to the public. Enjoy all that beach time offers: swimming, sunning, shelling, bird watching, building sandcastles. In the immediate area you can also enjoy kayaking, canoeing, boating, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, golfing, and many walking and biking trails. Madison's quaint town green, restaurants, and shops- including the wonderful and much celebrated R.J. Julia booksellers- are within two miles, as is Clinton Crossing's extensive outlet shopping. There are many restaurants nearby, from crab shacks, to various ethnic offerings, to high end al fresco dining with a seaside view. Mystic Aquarium and Seaport are a short drive away; and yet our little enclave is a serene place. It's our getaway spot, and we hope you'll enjoy it as much as we do.
