We are located at the end of a quiet residential street with a large vacant field as one of our next door neighbors. Parking is never an issue as I have 4 off-street spaces. The house is ideal for 4 low key adults. It is not as ideal for children due to the sensitive nature of the gardens and higher quality linens and fabrics throughout the house. (Please call for information if traveling with children - thanks!).
Across the street from the neighborhood is a trail network that can take you up the hill to the golf course and Fort Lewis College or over to the local ski hill and skating rink (ice skating in the winter) It's not uncommon to share the trails with a few 4 legged "deer" friends. The views from the top are first rate of the river and town below and the dramatic La Plata Mountains beyond. Another direction out the front door and a few minutes stroll is Riverview Elementary - a favorite place to play Frisbee, kick around a soccer ball or take in the serenity of the evening colors as the mountains turn their magical hues. In another couple blocks you can hop on the popular Animas river trail system which is a hard surface shared use path which stretches nearly 7 miles through the river greenway and is consistently rated as one of Durango's top amenities. Accessing the fairgrounds and the magnificent 71,557 sq. ft. rec center from the trail is an easy 10 or 15 min. walk from your front door. Continue down river another few min. and you're at the beautiful new library and botanic garden. A few more paces and have fun feeding pellets (bring your quarters for fish food) to a frenzy of young trout. In another few minutes you'll be crossing over the river and into the north end of downtown with all the shops and good eats. Be prepared for a close encounter with a real 1800's steam engine and train as it passes within feet of the river trail! If you enjoy hiking without the longer drive, we are located about 1.5 miles away from one of my most favorite in- town trail destinations, Animas Mountain and Dalla Parks system. It's got some great steep terrain through ponderosa oak forest often loaded with wildflowers for an elevation gain of about 1500ft (or take any of the shorter, less vigorous loops for awesome walking and bouldering).
If you prefer cycling we are located pretty much at the start of where the Durango Wheel Club, whose membership started in 1895, often begin their scenic club rides going North into the Animas Valley. Don't miss joining the local riders who frequent the unofficial bike headquarters, Bread Bakery, to enjoy refueling and tales of the road. Switch gears and indulge in a peaceful and relaxing soak and massage at Trimble Spa and Natural Hot Springs and enjoy the large lawns and mountain views.
Other spectacular things on "my favorite things to see and do in Durango list" include the really fantastic Train Museum. It is located behind the Durango/Silverton train depot and it is free admission! You will not be disappointed. There is also the charming Animas Museum which offers a view into Durango's local history and then there is The Center of Southwest Studies up at the Fort Lewis Campus which is rich in information about the plants, animals and people of our area using exhibits and a great lecture series. The river offers so much fun it's hard to know where to start. You can rent a kayak or paddle board, take a raft trip, rent a tube or just sit and watch the world go by with your feet in the cool, clear water. I don't fish but I see plenty of fisher people loving it and there are plenty of good fisher people shops in town to steer you to the good spots. We do have a zip line in town now which I haven't had the opportunity to try out yet but I've heard it's FUN! Do you like music and great performances? Durango's Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College is right up the hill across from our house and they book some really great acts. In the summer month of July and August the town is excited by the return of the Music In The Mountains classic music festival concerts held up at Purgatory as well as in town. In fact, if you like music and fun community events, summertime in Durango is no stranger to closing off blocks of main street and throwing a party or hosting a street fair with plenty of original art booths to tempt.
There is so much more to list but I think for now I will only offer one more super great, DO NOT MISS destination. You will have a night to remember when you book tickets to go see Durango's favorite local legends, The Bar D wranglers! The ticket includes dining at the chuck wagon, outside, under the western cowboy sky and then seamlessly erupts into one of the most fun, old time cowboy music shows you didn't know you were missing. You absolutely will not want to miss it.
When all this activity has you dog-tired you will be pleased you picked a home that is so ready to make you feel welcome, warm and comfortable.
