About the property

Mountain-view lodge escape, only 5 min from brews & art galleries? Yes it's real

Looking for the perfect combination of modern convenience, lodge-like settings, secluded woods, mountain views, and art-filled decor -- but still close to everything? TreeTops Lodge is for you. At 4,400 square feet, this contemporary cathedral-ceilinged house has all the upgrades of modern living -- luxurious baths, granite countertops with state-of-the-art appliances -- but with the feel of an old lodge, nestled in the woods, 1000 feet above Asheville with ever-changing woods and long-range views.

With an enclosed sun porch, a private deck on the ground level and expansive patio/deck off the living room (complete with patio furniture for 12 and a BBQ grill), the outdoor space rivals the indoor! From the main deck, you have northeastern and southern views of the nearby ridges, and lush greenery (or fiery fall foliage!) within reach.

The house features a cathedral ceiling living room with fireplace focal point, deep plush armchairs and sofas with two distinct seating areas. The nearby dining room features a massive dining table that can seat 14, hand-made by a local artisan using local sustainably harvested hemlock. Both the high-ceilinged living room and dining room contain art pieces I have acquired over the years, much of which is by local River Arts District weavers, potters, sculptors and oil painters.

Whether you cook every meal at home, or just grab a bite in the morning and sample the great local restaurant at night, you'll appreciate the massive kitchen off the living room, with its own six-person breakfast nook, ample granite countertops, two refrigerators, two ovens and state-of-the-art gas appliances.

Beyond the kitchen in the south wing is the original master bedroom with king bed and a trundle daybed that sleeps two more, with the largest of the private bathrooms with jacuzzi tub, double-headed walk-in shower, double vanity and giant walk-in closet. The Mission-style king bed and daybed in this room were both hand-crafted by a local artisan using locally source Appalachian pine.

The other two large king-bed bedrooms on the main floor are in the north wing. They share one and half baths, including a large marble-lined shower. The plantation-style king in one room is also handmade by the same artisan who build the Mission bed in the Master. The other king headboard is made from two original queen headboards that Asheville's historic Grove Park Inn used in the 1920s which were sold to the public in 1976 when the Inn was remodeled. Both rooms also feature local art.

Downstairs features a very large family room with regulation-sized pool table, a second small kitchen and bar, an additional bath and a half and the remaining three bedrooms - a queen room for two, and a twin-and twin-over full bunk for four more and the "bunkhouse with two bunk beds for four more. That brings to total sleeping count to 18.

The house, however, is not designed to support 18 adults. The bunks are better used for kids, and I generally prefer to rent to no more than 12 adults. Most of my booking are large extended families coming to Asheville for family events like a wedding or a reunion. I try to be thoughtful of the neighbors, and renting to families keeps the number of cars and noise level in the neighborhood to a minimum. I ask guest to please park in the large driveway and parking pad, not on the main road, as a courtesy to my neighbors.

The house is situated on a steep hill, surrounded by 3.5 acres of forest, out of sight and sound of neighbors. The road to the house and the driveway are NOT steep. But with the hillside falling of quickly below the house, there is not a lot of yard. The huge deck seems to float among the tree tops, offering shade when you want it, but magical views of far-off mountains. It will be easy to forget that you are less than a mile from Starbucks, fine dining, groceries, breweries and other conveniences.

The house itself is on level ground, with only one step up onto the porch to enter. Once in the house (up that one step), the entire main floor and deck are handicap accessible and wheel-chair friendly. Past guests with elderly or frail parents or grandparents have found the house well-suited to those with limited mobility.

I have lived in or visited Asheville on and off for more than 20 years. This house is my home about three months of the year. There is so much to do and see here. If you are planning a trip, book tickets to the Biltmore early. My house has lots of brochures about other local activities, and I can always provide a restaurant idea or two.

I hope you will choose to stay at TreeTops Lodge. Regardless of where you choose to stay, and whether you are coming for the art or the beer, please enjoy your time in America's most magical and relaxed mountain town.

I do not advertise on craigs list. If you see the ad there it is scam. Please report it! If you are more than 12 people, I may have to raise the cleaning fee by $100. It can take two people most of a day to clean up after larger groups. If your stay creates a "turn" where staff only have five hour to prepare the house for the next guests, I will also need to charge an additional $100. I value my cleaning staff and there families, and I compensate my cleaning team ( and landscaping and maintenance people) and at a livable wage, well above the minimum. Please join me in supporting our service workers in Asheville's tourist economy!

About Mike Smith

I have lived in San Francisco since 1986 but have been splitting my time between there and Asheville, where my parents and two siblings live, for 20 years. I love the arts scene in Asheville, and there is so much to do outdoors! I am the co-founder the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which started on my back porch in 1987. (Younger people have no clue what this is, but a Google search should help...) I've been running AIDS or LGBT organizations my whole adult life and enjoy the community-building aspect of what I do. After 13 years, I recently stepped down as executive director of AIDS Emergency Fund and Breast Cancer Emergency Fund, two related non-profits that help low income people pay their basic living costs while disabled or going through surgery, chemo or radiation. Asheville has always been my escape space and un-stressing zone. I know it will be yours, too! Whether it’s a gallery opening, dinner with extended family, or just watching the Fall foliage, I know I can leave the rat race behind here.

Why Mike Smith chose Grove Park- Sunset

There is something magical about life in a forest, watching the season change from every window -- on 4 acres, out of sight of neighbors, but SO close to town. I fell in love with the long-range views, the fireplace, and the quick access to everything. Although I spend most of the year in San Francisco, I am here about three months of the year. It would be a shame for a big house like this to sit empty, so I am sharing it with you. I've downsized a bit in San Francisco, and have sent most of my big art pieces to this house, including many pieces from local Asheville artists, that I have acquired over the years. This in my retreat house, with the birds in the trees (and at the feeder) and the sound of the wind. Art galleries in town and the working artists' studios of the River Arts District are my daily hunting grounds when I am here. But the quick drive back up the mountain to the house nourishes my soul.

What makes this house unique

I love the seclusion, the access to town, the modern conveniences of a newer house, the soaring cathedral ceilings, having all my art accessible around me, and sharing it with new friends.

The property seemed exactly what was advertised. It was spacious and well-equipped with a nice view

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time with our family and were quite comfortable. No complaints- the only inconvenience, which was small, was the garbage disposal not working well. We had to plunge on several occasions and it eventually began working again. Thanks for a wonderful time.

Beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

6 of us stayed for a work retreat for 5 days. The property is beautiful! The house itself is well appointed with lots of bedrooms. We were able to make our own breakfasts and lunches - everything we needed for kitchen equipment was provided. The artwork in the house is stunning.

Beautiful home-great location!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for a long weekend in Asheville for 4 couples who have ben getting together for over 20 years. We wanted to do some sightseeing, hiking and brewery tours in and around Asheville. This home proved to be the perfect spot. There was plenty of room for us all to have our own rooms/baths and the common areas were perfect for eating, drinking and talking. The drives to town, the Biltmore and hiking were all very easy and Uber in the evening for dinner was great. All in all a perfect home for our group. Plenty of room for kids too, although none of ours joined in this trip. One of our group is thinking of renting in the fall for a family reunion!

Perfect for a crowd!

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for a group of 10 adults and we definitely could have added a few kids in the mix! We each had our own space but there was plenty of room in the kitchen and living areas to gather together. Kitchen is well stocked and linens and beds were comfortable. Excellent location to downtown. Uber drivers knew exactly where to come to pick us up and, depending on time of day, Uber prices were around $10 to get downtown. We even took Uber to the Sierra Nevada brewery and back and it was very affordable. We had some weather come in and Mike, the owner, called to check on us. Very well managed property.
