About the property

Completely renovated 3BR, 2 bath 1930's cottage in a quiet neighborhood!

This beautiful cottage is perfect for family reunions, wedding parties, gal-pal getaways, or golfing buddies. Not only do you have all the comforts of home in a quiet, secluded neighborhood -- you're also smack-dab in the middle of town . . . so that you can walk to EVERYTHING! Although just steps from the major road leading into Beaufort, the Craftsman Cottage is set in a garden oasis that muffles the sounds of traffic and the outside world . . . and provides a private, tranquil hideaway retreat from the world. Yet, you are literally steps away from wonderful restaurants, shops and the Historic District!

This 1930's cottage has been completely renovated and has high ceilings and a wonderfully open floor plan which help it live large! The house has a large front porch with tables and chairs where you can relax and watch boats meandering along the Beaufort River.

The spacious living room includes a leather sofa, side chairs, footstools, a fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling bookcases. In addition to joining the kitchen and dining areas, the Great Room provides extra seating and a breakfast bar. A brick fireplace anchors the room and is flanked by floor-to-ceiling bookcases; the dining table is set into a bay window alcove. The polished hardwood breakfast bar overlooks a large open kitchen with Corian countertops. A washer and dryer are set in an alcove off the kitchen just beyond the pantry.

The front bedroom has a king-sized bed, the middle bedroom had two twins, and the back bedroom has a queen. The front bath, which has a pedestal sink, porcelain tub, and wainscoted walls is accessible from the hallway between the king and twin bedrooms. The second bath -- with twin furniture-style cabinet sinks, custom-tiled floors and walls, and a quarter-circle shower -- is accessible through the queen bedroom. Each bedroom (along with the living room) has its own TV with DVD player. The house has basic cable with major network channels, and a desk with secured WiFi.

On the side of the cottage is a private garden complete with patio table, chairs, grill, birdbath and bench for your outdoor enjoyment.

About Brenda Hood

I’m a Lowcountry native. I grew up in Charleston and have lived in Beaufort for twenty-five years, so I know the Lowcountry area well. My favorite pastime as a child was traipsing through the swamps and woods -- finding unusual plants and artifacts, picking blackberries, and just communing with nature. That early wandering around may have been a foretelling of my true nature. I’ve often joked that my ancestors were gypsies or vagabonds, because I yearned to travel from an early age! By the time I finished college, however, I hadn’t been much of anywhere!

So, when my husband graduated law school, I convinced him to enter the Army JAG Corps on the premise that HE could gain valuable courtroom experience, WE could travel, and I could improve my command of the German language (I was teaching German). We spent our first five years in Germany!

For the next 20 years, we traveled with Uncle Sam. Life in the military afforded my family the opportunity – not to just travel, but to immerse ourselves in other cultures . . . to truly live like the locals! As a result, I understand what visitors need when away from home. Likewise, life as a military wife/mother has also provided me with the expertise to turn each new abode into a real home. I have taken great pride and care in doing just that for our guests in our Craftsman Cottage and The Tabby Townhome at Magnolia Court Guest Suites!

We literally stumbled onto Beaufort while vacationing on Hilton Head. What a delight! Beaufort had everything we wanted. It’s a small version of historic Charleston; coastal (we had been land-locked for years) with salt marshes and palm trees; picturesque with antebellum homes and moss-draped oaks; and rich with a colorful history that predates the arrival of Spanish, French, and then English explorers in the 1500 and 1600’s. Beaufort provides the friendliness of a small town along with the diversity and sophistication you would only expect to find in a large cosmopolitan city

Brenda Hood purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Brenda Hood chose Uptown

I've had to pack up my career and reinvent myself as we moved around the world with Uncle Sam. I’ve done it all -- a teacher, writer, community relations, public relations, marketing and so on. Shortly after arriving in Beaufort I decided to make a major career shift and opened an antiques shop. The need to escape a drawn-out road construction project in Beaufort ultimately led to the purchase of this 1930’s cottage in 2004 to relocate/house my shop. I wanted a property close to town but not on the main thoroughfare and I didn't want it to 'look' commercial. I was also intrigued with the potential of the two-story tabby townhome next door (where our the listing The Manhattan, vrbo # 84972 is located).

At the time, there were few nice hotels in town and even fewer options for people coming to Beaufort for extended periods of time that wanted more than just a hotel room. I jumped in and bought both properties with plans to renovate the three-unit then derilict townhome into fully-furnished apartments that could be rented for short periods of time. I had never heard of short-term rentals or VRBO at that time -- but nonetheless established the Tabby Townhome at Magnolia Court Guest Suites (vrbo#84972) to launch my rental business.

Several years later, just prior to the "crash" of the stock market, I closed the antiques shop, and transformed the cottage into an additional rental which you see here (vrbo# 710172). The size and charm of The Craftsman Cottage make it a perfect choice for families, gal-pal getaways, and golfing/fishing weekends. It offers sleeping for six to eight guests.

What makes this cottage unique

We've met so many wonderful people since we opened in 2005 and love to have them return year after year -- snow birds from the northern United States and Canada looking to winter-over in a milder climate, professionals working in Beaufort for several months and wanting something more than a hotel room, friends meeting up in a place where they can be together, families and couples vacationing, military families moving into or out of the area, people relocating to Beaufort and needing a home while theirs is being built, and local families hosting an overflow of guests for special occasions. The Craftsman Cottage, with its open floor plan, large front porch, secluded side garden and terrific location make it a wonderful place to stay. And the icing on the cake? We have our very own boat landing at the end of our street . . . and a gorgeous oak-shaded park just one block away!

My husband and I still love to travel. Now that he has retired “for good,” we plan to hit the road again as frequent visitors ourselves. And naturally, we’ll be staying in guest rentals – with all the comforts of home – especially if they’re located, like ours, in the heart of the community -- so we, too, can easily walk everywhere.

We welcome you . . . to The Craftsman Cottage at Magnolia Court Guest Suites, your Home Away from Home.

Great home and location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our week long home away from home so much. Out your door in any direction was parks to explore shops and great restaurants to eat. You are about a ten minute walk from the river front. We had everything we needed for our stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much, Karen, for choosing to stay with us at Magnolia Court Guest Suites -- and I'm so sorry your stay was delayed by Hurricane Matthew's arrival last fall, but happy that we could accommodate you! I was glad to finally get to meet you and your husband and delighted that you both dove into everything Beaufort has to offer. It is a delightful town -- much like a small version of my hometown, Charleston . . . and our location puts you in the center of it all. Please pass the word to your friends and neighbors about the Craftsman Cottage at Magnolia Court . . . and we hope to see YOU again, too! -- Brenda Hood, owner/operator

Owner's Response: Thanks, Peter, for choosing the Craftsman Cottage for your golf weekend with your friend and three sons. So glad you had a great time and enjoyed your stay. Yes, we are looking at how we can adapt that bathroom to a tub/shower configuration. When we renovated the cottage our aim was to have at least one tub (because many people like those as well), and the tub seemed logical because of the window, which we didn't want to eliminate on that wall. But, . . . a combination WOULD be nice! We'll look into it further. Hope to see you back for more golf! -- Brenda Hood, Owner/Operator

Dear Brenda and Gene,

we really enjoyed our staying at Magnolia Courts in Mai 2015. Your sweet home „ Craftman suite“

,was perfect for us six guys from Germany. From the first moment up to the end of our vacation we feltl welcome at Magnolia Court.

The veranda at the front door invited us and even could be used bv Ullis wheelchair. Inside, every room reflected your great heart in a wunderful and different way. In the ktichen we find every thinkable thing we need, from the perfectly filled refrigerator up to the coffeemachine, the washmachine and the dryer. The two bathrooms were very comfortable and excellent fitted.

Every room was perfectly clean and lovely styled. During our stay Brenda took care of us in every matter we had

We really recommend Magnolia Court from the bottem of our heart and surley will come back. It was great, absolutly perfect, einfach wuuuunderbar!

We also enjoyed dinner and cocktails at the wunderfull Dockside, the kind service in the icecram-shop Yo Yo Icecream, the bakery Palm and Moon Bagel. The boattrip with the dolphins was a great adventure for us.

Your german friends Heidi, Ernst, Ulli,Wolfgang, Gerhard and Martina!

Fabulous place!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend visiting my daughter's family last October and were thrilled with our stay in the Craftsman Cottage. It was very spacious and extremely comfortable. We had two of our other kids and a grandbaby with us and there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out. We were very close to the waterfront and some amazing restaurants. There was also a park for the kids just down the street. And Brenda was a super hostess! We can't wait to go back!

Craftsman Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Craftsman Cottage in October of 2014 when our son graduated from boot camp at Parris Island. What a lovely home! It was spacious, spotlessly clean, convenient to Parris Island, and very comfortable for our large group. We loved the proximity to the shops and restaurants --- all within walking distance --- and it was nice to get out and sight-see on foot each evening. Brenda went above and beyond in her efforts to make sure our family was taken care of. The photos of the Cottage represent it perfectly. We will definitely be returning to Magnolia Court.
