About this property

Heaven on the Beach!

Rare rental opportunities available for this cozy three story home full of character and history on the beach in Biddeford Pool. Spacious lot with lush gardens and natural landscaping, situated on a 2.5 mile private, hotel-free sand beach with private steps to the beach and no houses behind the property. Wraparound window seats on the second and third floors provide an excellent place to enjoy sunrise over the ocean as well as sunsets over the harbor; the second-floor balcony and the Jacuzzi tub in the third-floor master bath are also perfect for savoring the sun's last rays. Hand feed three tamed pet seagulls from the third-floor balcony overlooking the ocean, enjoy lobster rolls at the picnic table or on the deck atop the sea wall, or enjoy a good book in one of two hammocks by the deck. Prepare and enjoy a beach-side barbecue with the gas grill, placed in a dugout to protect your food from wind and sand. Bikes and ample beach gear available for days filled with sunshine and fun, and family fun nights are at hand with a large selection of games, toys, videos, and DVDs at your disposal. The small but well-equipped kitchen with new IKEA cabinets has everything you need for your seafood feasts as well as a lovely afternoon and evening view of the beach. Broadband cable and wireless internet available for business needs, trip planning, etc as well. Roku TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu provided for your entertainment.

This house is the oldest property on Biddeford Pool. It has been owned and lovingly cared for by the same family since 1907. The regular tenants have been renting every season between 21 and 37 years. The home has opened up for two separate weeks in August/September, due to those weeks' usual families growing too large for the house. This is a great opportunity to start a new, cherished tradition for your family.

Wonderful
What a great location and amazing beach! Scott and Sandy were great communicators and were available and responsive to any of our needs. The house is full of history and the family’s treasures. There are lovely little nooks to read, visit with family or enjoy your tea. The views from the 3rd floor may be the best on the beach! The kitchen is small but very well equipped. We loved our stay and look forward to returning.

Scott was a great host
Scott was very attentive to our needs. The gas grill was broken when we got there and Scott had a replacement there by 8:30 the next morning.

Excellent Location
If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing stay steps away from the ocean, this is your spot. Our party included 4 adults and 2 children (ages 7 and 3), and we all had a wonderful time. The beach is absolutely stunning and is not packed with people whatsoever. The house has all the amenities we needed. Scott and Sandy were great to communicate with. Book this house… you will love it!

Renter Beware
An historic family place, which is clearly dear to the family. While we appreciated the century of memories documented throughout, family attachment has led to overlooking comforts for normal rental experiences: broken “original” pull-chain toilet, no A/C, mildewed basement bedrooms, 1-person galley kitchen, 2 broken refrigerators, myriad “rules” notes, spotty Internet, glitchy electrical fuse, broken window and door, zero open surfaces. Worked around owner’s toiletries, clothes in drawers. Despite paying a high rental fee for what this cottage turned out to be, it felt like we were hesitantly admitted guests. During our stay, owner explained the property is rented to pay taxes: It is not our responsibility to politely excuse price-gouging for what this property is, to ensure family legacy. Nor must we be patient with the kind older owner’s defensiveness about property quirks when top dollar is paid for expectation of fully functional lodging. Dirty: During this pandemic year, the most exigent concern is lack of professional cleaners. We found out too late that cleaning is on an “honors system.” So, there is no accountability for cleanliness or rearranged possessions. Our family spent the entire afternoon upon arrival deep-cleaning between indescribable volumes of clutter, collectibles, literal mountains of unwashed throw pillows, and disposing of left-behind groceries and wet bars of soap from previous renters before we felt safe to touch surfaces, use the kitchen, or prepare bedding. We found using the outside shower all week to be preferable to inside shower options. Accessibility: 20-foot drop on steep stairs to beach. High tide makes beach blocked for 4+ hrs. Bonus: If you enjoy the thrill of a swarm of shorebirds overhead, the owner mixes special mayonnaise-tuna seagull food in a jar and leaves it in the fridge for your use. Summary: Our regionally-experienced beach rental group can roll with discomforts (outdoor shower, window nooks in lieu of beds) or lack of perfection (fridge leak floor-mopping, “friendly” muskrats in shed). But we struggled to relax or find a single comfortable chair. Tiny property sleeps 3 adult guests, max. We cannot condone use of ancient pullout sofas or dank basement beds. Positives: Bikes, kayaks, hammocks, toys. Pets OK. No road noises. Wild deer, minke whales. Clean and beautiful beach, quiet place to ramble and explore.

Why they chose this property

The Shack was the original building on the mile stretch between Biddeford Pool and the Atlantic Ocean. Originally built as a 20x20 bird hunting shack in 1865, later upgraded to include a basement, second floor, balcony, and glassed in front rooms with wraparound benches overlooking the beach. The original structure is still preserved within the middle floor to include the external shingles, original interior, and bunk room. The property has been lovingly owned and cared for by our family since 1907.

Unlike many properties, it is not sparsely furnished with limited amenities. It's fully furnished and decorated, to include family photos dating back to the early 1900s, hunting decoys, Maine kitsch, wall art, and everything you need to relax and enjoy a comfortable family vacation in a quaint, cozy, and historic setting.
