About this property

Black Rock Cabin - Your Death Valley Base Camp in the Shoshone Eco Village

Our lovely contemporary home is located 1 mile from the south entrance to Death Valley National Park. It is newly remodeled to accommodate a group of 6. It has a double bed in the bedroom, and a great room that offers a semi-private space for 2 more double beds. This home is situated in a sweet RV park and campground where friends and family can camp close by. In beautiful natural surroundings, this home is nestled in a lush desert oasis with a warm spring pool.

With a commitment to protecting our biodiverse ecosystem, we have created numerous trails. Across from the RV park campground is a short path through viewing ponds for the Shoshone Pupfish, once considered extinct. These pools are surrounded by newly created habitat for the endangered Amargosa Vole. We also offer several trails for viewing birds in our backyard of the Shoshone Wetlands, and a 3 mile loop of gorgeous desert vistas.

The Village of Shoshone offers a gas station, gift shop, small store and restaurant. The Shoshone Museum offers exhibits of local history and lore, the rich regional geology and natural history. Come see the Mammoth exhibit! A short walk from the village is a fascinating historical district. The homes carved into the caliche cliffs harken to the mining era of Death Valley.

Please note that we are located in a rural area and are a 1/2 hour from a grocery store. Our little general store does have a few groceries and ready-to-eat food items but if you plan to cook please do your shopping before you arrive to make sure you have what you need for your meals.

An oasis outside of Death Valley
Tiny town with big civic pride. Spring fed warm water pool . Trails . Restaurant with good eats . Shoshone is about 1 mile south of a DV entrance. Perfect retreat where you can see the endangered pupfish close up. Artist house was well appointed and comfortable. Beautiful sunrise and sunsets- friendly people.

Oasis
We initially rented this unit (for one night) because it was one of the only VRBO choices with kitchen in the area near Death Valley, on our route during a month long road trip. We had not previously heard of Shoshone. The unit itself is a cabin in an RV park. The cabin is somewhat rustic (think old school cabin). What made this place five stars is the immediate surroundings. After driving through desert in July, we were shocked at how green Shoshone (population 31) is. Shoshone is a small oasis, wetland area formed by water coming down out of the hills. The RV park itself is very green, more green than many RV parks where we live in the rainy Pacific Northwest. The grounds include a warm swimming pool, filled with natural hot springs water. Next door are small trails with natural ponds, many birds, and endangered pupfish. Across the street, some additional, more lengthy trails have been created (overgrown when we were there), that allow you to explore the desert and wetland environment. The town includes a historic diner that had very good food.

Spring Break in Death Valley
This was a great place to base our exploration of Death Valley out of. The cabin had everything we needed for a great, comfortable stay. The kids loved the spring fed pool, and it was great to be able to explore the immediate area just by walking. Would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to visit Death Valley National Park.

Nice cabin in RV Park
Comfortable and pretty roomy. All the living areas were very clean. There is one bed in the living room area, that is pretty well closed off by a folding screen. When we got there at night, there was a bug in the sink, either a potato bug or maybe a sun spider. The man at the desk saved us by coming in to take care of it. We were a little creeped out by this, but we had no other insect visitors during our stay. Reasons for 4 stars: Missing a few things needed for staying there. Most notably, the dish soap was practically empty and there was no replacement or refill to be found. I added water to the bottle and we were able to use it. I needed sugar, and it was provided, but in coffee packets that also contained creamer, stirrer, and napkin. I had to open multiple packets without using all the items. Plastic dish pan under the sink was filthy. We wanted to try and save on water going down the drain, but decided not to use it.
