New Mexico is a haven for the unexpected. It’s an attitude. A way of life: amazing vistas, unexpected experiences, a direct immediate connection with nature, a pathway to the past . It’s adventure in its truest form. And, it's waiting for you!
Welcome to Double E Ranch Vacation Cabin Rentals! The Piñon Log Cabin is a 460 square foot studio. Amenities include: complete kitchen with 2 apartment sized refrigerators, a 4-burner gas stove top, microwave, coffee maker, blender, toaster, dishes, flatware, cooking pots and utensils and bbq grill.
Because the Village of Gila does not have a convenient grocery store nearby, for an additional charge, you can order in advance breakfast items as well as steaks, chicken breasts, salmon fillets, or ranch raised grass fed ground beef. Please talk to Debbie about this option.
Bed is queen sized with luxury hotel quality mattress with Egyptian cotton bedding, plush blankets, pillows and comforter. Bathroom is complete with full bath tub and shower, plenty of thick towels, and face cloths. Short term guests need only to bring food, drinks, seasonings, personal items such as face soaps, lotions, etc. Your cabin is provided with complimentary facial tissue, several rolls of toilet paper and paper towels.
Double E Ranch adjoins 6500 acres of a New Mexico Wildlife Preserve (soon to be opened to the public) and is situated along the southwestern edge of the legendary Gila National Forest. We are just 30 miles from restaurants, museums and shopping in historic Silver City, New Mexico.
Double E Ranch Vacation Cabin Rentals was inspired by our desire to share our exceptionally beautiful hidden valley location along Bear Creek, literally 'at the end of the road'. We directly adjoin a 6500 acre wildlife preserve soon to be open to the public, and are a short drive to the 3 million acres of the Gila National Forest. The southwestern lifestyle and our love for ranching in New Mexico is our reason for being here.
For 18 years, Double E Ranch was a working cattle, horse and guest ranch. The specialty at Double E Ranch was providing our guests with the unique opportunity to experience the undiluted, real sensations of southwestern New Mexico ranch life. The original 'bunk house' and 100 year old ranch house were used to house visitors from all around the world and are in the process of refurbishing, eventually to be included as cabin options.
Now retired, Debbie and Alan continue to offer you a unique opportunity to experience a taste of life on a southwestern New Mexico ranch, explore a diverse ecological region, meet the recent and ancient past up close. Thousands of years ago the Mimbres Indians lived along Bear Creek and the Gila River. Pottery pieces, ancient tools, pictographs and remnants of stone dwellings can be readily found. More recently, legendary characters including Billy the Kid, Geronimo, and Ben Lily roamed the hills, mountains and towns in this area.
A more relaxed environment and privacy... your own cabin, your own time schedule, meals when you want to cook them. With the sun just beginning to peek over the mountain, begin by enjoying that first cup of coffee or tea, absorbing the sights and sounds of what 'peaceful' really feels like. Just about sunset, from your rocker on the deck, put your feet up, watch the mountains change from rocky rust, to stunning, vibrant reds, oranges, yellows while saying 'adios' to another healing day.
Take advantage of this incredible location, experience the magic of southwestern New Mexico by using our vacation cabins as your "home away from home" while exploring the entire southwest. Short day trips to the Gila Cliff Dwellings or City of Rocks or overnight in Santa Fe, Old Tombstone, historic Las Cruces or famous El Paso.
Breath! You'll easily be able to disconnect from the frenetic race of urban lifestyles. Our fully furnished, self catered cabins contain everything needed to make your experience relaxing, convenient and restful.
Our weather in every season is mild compared to most other regions of the country. For guests coming from our northern states, Double E Ranch is a fantastic haven for escaping the bitter cold and snow of winter! The area offers diverse activities, events and places to keep you interested and entertained, year round: Tour de Gila Bike Race, Silver City Blues Festival, art galleries, museums. With lower humidity levels, being outdoors is comfortable nearly every day and the sun shines an average of 330 days a year!
There are plenty of activities for you to enjoy on the ranch. Bring your horse! We've got self-care pens (call us for rates) and a 300x250 enclosed arena with excellent footing. If you have always wanted to try Cowboy Mounted Shooting, this is the place to learn. Alan has taught the basics of Mounted Shooting to hundreds of folks over the years along with the clinical techniques for improving your results, as well (additional charge). Don't worry -- no 'live' ammunition is used.
Just outside your cabin door, you have hiking, birding, star gazing and mountain biking. In a short 20 minute drive or 40 minute horse back ride, you will have unlimited access to nearly 3 million acres of public lands (New Mexico State Land, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service) making activities such as hunting, rock hounding, exploring Native ruins, and spectacular, exciting horseback riding easily accessible, never running out of new trails to travel!
A cozy 1 bedroom log cabin with covered deck and nearly 430 sf. Nestled among the cottonwood and sycamore trees along Bear Creek, you'll find a little bit of New Mexico magic. Easy access to the legendary Gila National Forest, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding. Climate is comfortable in every season. Winters are especially nice for visitors coming from northern states. It's not unusual for January - March to have daytime temps between 55 - 68 degrees F.
Feel free to walk about. Several of our cabins, barn and most of the corrals are original and have been in constant use for over 130 years. We continue to work hard at staying true to the historic 'feel' of ranch as it was in New Mexico back in the late 1890's. We are excited to announce that we are currently upgrading the 'old ranch house', built in the late 1890's or early 1900's. Original architecture with some very unique features, including high ceilings, fireplace in the bedroom, claw foot bathtub and screened wrap around porch with rockers and swing will take you back in time long past.
After your first creek crossing you'll find a privately protected riparian area that runs for several miles along Bear Creek. Wild life is abundant, you can spot hundreds of native and migratory birds, deer, brown bear, and Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep. At night you'll see the Milky Way spread across a clear, dark New Mexico sky.
Debbie or Alan are making "self check in" an option. When available, they will greet you, show you to your cabin and answer any immediate questions you might have. A booklet of pertinent information along with cabin keys will be inside. It is likely you will see Alan working one of his many horses at the ranch. His passion is training well bred quarter horses for such disciplines as cattle work, reined cow horse and cowboy mounted shooting. As an expert horseman, he has a wealth of information, tips and techniques he is always willing to share. We have plenty of additional room for parking trailers so bring your own horse! It's the very best way to experience this amazing part of the southwest.
Using your cabin as your 'home away from home', you can easily access some of the most beautiful sites in New Mexico and the southwest, including Silver City, Glenwood, Las Cruces, Carlsbad Caverns, Ruidoso and Santa Fe to name just a few easy day trip options . Interesting art galleries, museums, restaurants are just a short drive from the ranch. Day trips to either Arizona or Texas are convenient, with plenty to see and experience.
House Rules: Our pace is slower, making it easy to unplug from the stressful rush of urban life. No watches, clocks, time schedules or traffic gridlock. Activities happen at your own pace. Feel like a hike up "Turtle Mountain" to explore Apache Corral? We don't have signs reminding you to "stay on the trail". You make our own trails. Maybe indulge in a good book or a nap? It won't take long for you to reconnect with your own natural rhythm.
Pets are ok, but we do ask that you discuss it with Debbie prior to making a reservation. As a ranch, we have horses, cattle, ducks, a few chickens and our own dogs. As such, all our ranch animals understand appropriate behavior.
Sorry -- no smoking inside your cabin. Sitting outside on your own private deck to indulge is very pleasant. If you open a gate, please remember to close it, as well. Knock before your enter. We respect your privacy and hope you will reciprocate.
Grant County is still very rural. Ranching remains a very important part of the local economy. A few miles from your cabin, the Gila River flows all the way to Arizona and beyond. Canoe-ing, tubing, fishing or simply listening to the water move are all easy to do. Silver City has some interesting art galleries and restaurants and is just a 30 mile drive.
Silver City has a public transport van (Corre Caminos) making stops all throughout town for a small fee, as well as a small, short flight commuter air service (Boutique Air) to Albuquerque or Phoenix where you can make connections to anywhere. El Paso (3 hours away) has a very nice International airport with easy access, easy parking. Phoenix International Airport is 5 hours drive.

We are 3.5 miles off the main paved road. Hooker Loop is a County Maintained dirt road, kept in very good condition. 90% of the year 2-wheel drive is quite adequate. During brief periods of rain, all-wheel drive is better. We do not recommend motorcycles.
We realize it's not always possible to determine an accurate arrival time. During the day, we may not be in the office, but outside working. Prior to your arrival date we will send you specific information including the location of your cabin. We will leave the door unlocked, a light on outside and inside, general information, our contact telephone number and a key on the table. If we are not available to greet you on arrival, please feel comfortable going to your cabin. We will phone (or if you want, you phone us) to make sure you have arrived safely and have no immediate needs.
We recommend guests bring any personal items with them, including shampoo, special face soap, preferred coffee, etc.
Because we are located in a valley, we have no cell phone service. However, wi-fi is provided. You can send and receive email, access the internet, download movies from sources such as NetFlix or Amazon. We provide telephone service for local calls only (Gila, Cliff, Buckhorn, Mule Creek). Long distance calls, please bring a calling card.
Our night skies are amazingly clear. New Mexico has very few bothersome bugs and you will enjoy spending evenings outside on your deck. However, what few bugs we do have will are still attracted by light - outside or inside. We recommend you leave your porch light off as often as possible. There will be an oil lantern in your cabin, providing plenty of light for you to enjoy the night skies with limited irritants.
When bringing your pets, all dogs must be on leash with outside. We offer a cabin with small fenced pen. Plan to bring your own pet bed. NO pets on the furniture. We do not ask for a 'damage deposit'. However, you agree to pay for any damage.
