If you want to experience the quaint village lifestyle, this home is for you. Situated in the quiet residential village of Mendocino, it's a short walk to all restaurants, grocery stores, art galleries, fine shopping, beaches, walking trails and headlands. This home has a beautiful private garden and is just steps away from spectacular ocean views. A photographer's paradise, more than 40 films and television shows have been filmed in Mendocino. The charming Victorian-style homes, water towers and dramatic ocean views make it an ideal spot for rest, relaxation, creative work and exploring nature. This home is a real gem, with cozy beds and all the amenities you'll need to rest and relax.
What people often don't realize is that October, is one of the most favorable times to visit. While all seasons offer something, October is my favorite month for the warmth of the weather, the slow down of the season (re:less crowds) and the sun that shines warm before the storms of winter.
* Marigold House can also be rented in combination with Marigold Cottage (VRBO #193980 ), a studio unit with its own kitchen, on the same property, in order to accommodate up to 6 guests total.
*I will greet you at the house to answer any questions, help you with info about the area and let you in.
Whilst there are many things to do in Mendocino and many magazines you will have access to, I have my favorites and recommendations for my family and friends that come up........here is a sampling.........
Things to do in Mendo:
Walk/Stroll Mendocino headlands......there is a blow hole you can get to by walking on the headlands.
Then there is always just walking Mendo village......
Mendocino is blessed with a nice, eclectic Art Center, you can walk through it and see lots of art for sale and sculptures outside, there is a live theater and gallery on Ukiah Street....
Drive or bike to Pt Cabrillo lighthouse, there is a short hike down to it.... It is a 3 mile ride from Mendocino.
Glass Beach.....where the old dump (one of three ocean dumps on the coast) glass has been ground down by the ocean waves so it is smooth and pebble like. ( largest in the world I once read is its claim). 1-1 1/2 hours
Fort Bragg Brewery. For lunch or beer.....try old Rasputin or a Prankster, my favorites.....or go for the sampler. Don't dismay, it may be local but is distributed far and wide. Wild mushroom pizza is the best....
MacKerricher State Park, boardwalk, easy hike & whale watching. This is just north of Fort Bragg, well signed.
Montgomery Woods State Park.....this is a 45 minute or so drive on the Comptche Ukiah road, you'll feel lost but you aren't, just keep going, it is well signed. If you reach Ukiah, you've missed it but was obviously doing other things to distract you.......Largest trees on earth, 14 foot at the base.....beautiful creek lined valley. 2 hour round trip drive 1-2 hours there. 4 total.... pack a lunch, there are bathrooms (pit style, albiet nice) and picnic tables to hang out at.
Hendy Woods State Park..........short hikes through the famous huge awe-inspiring redwood trees if you don't want to commit the time to Montgomery Woods.
Blow Hole at Russian Gulch.......Blow hole behind little River Cemetery.....make it a blow hole visiting day; by first visiting the one on the Mendocino Headlands, then the one at Russian Gulch headlands, if you walk towards the ocean, you'll find it.....then the one behind the cemetery at Little River. Park at the cemetery or the Little River Store and walk behind the cemetery and you'll find it.
For steam engine aficionados, the Skunk Train.....half a day thru second growth redwoods next to the river. Can bring a Picnic Basket (cooler) & beer/wine on train.....
Fort Bragg walking of small eclectic shops. Franklin & Laurel Streets....Walk thru train station shop & The Depot; shops, eatery, train displays and wine tasting....
Walk thru The old Company Store; now made into shops and eateries......large old growth redwood building with lots of old pictures.....Dine upstairs at the Bistro.....
Go thru The Guest House Museum....old growth redwood home built way back when the lumber company was in its heyday....donated to the City....
Noyo Harbor for lunch?? Or drive down to see where "Overboard" with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel filmed parts of the movie....or Sea Pal Cove, the freshest fish and the great beer on tap....Bourbon Barrel Brewed stout......yummmm...
Long or short hikes available.....coastal headlands, redwoods, in the middle of the forest to tall old growth forest....or over an old train trestle, made for pedestrians....(this is near glass beach)......turn north past Glass Beach area and park at the end. You can also walk or ride all the way to MacKerricker.....its only 3 miles.....
(Very) Short hike in Pygmy forests ( maybe a good one-short stunted tress that live in alkaline soil......). Boardwalk hike, very short 15-20 minutes drive there...Or, you can bring two cars, park one at Van Damm beach parking lot and drive up the Little River Airport Road till you see it around 3 miles up on the right. Take this trail to Van Damm and thru Fern Canyon, walk to your car. One way with the car shuttle. You may also chose to do the loop, the hill really isn't that bad.
Botanical Gardens.....beautiful landscaped area & walk to bluffs along a creek.....can bring picnic lunch & beer/wine......free to members of other gardens if included in the reciprocal program, which include hundreds of gardens, so bring your local Botanical Gardens card (membership here is $50.00 a year). This is a gem for our coast, the only Botanical Garden to boast ocean frontage. Many collections to impress you.....the most visited attraction on the coast. Its place on the list means nothing.....
Pacific Star winery north of Fort Bragg on the coast.....can bring a picnic lunch....Beautiful scenery.....Great rough coastal area....Its north of Fort Bragg by a few committed miles brings you to an expanse of coast that is breathtaking (as if it weren't already). Taste wine for $5., buy your favorite and head out to the headlands area where there are picnic tables and an expansive Mendocino ocean view......enjoy......
