Converted Pole Barn Near Beach Becomes Luxury Destination

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,700 sq ft
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Barn, 2 Bedrooms + 2 Baths/ Limit 4 people

Luxurious amenities combine with beach casual to make our Nid d'Amour (Love Nest) distinctive. In it's prior life a 'pole barn', this property has now been converted into seventeen hundred square feet of self-contained privacy a short walk to the beach access, where the Mouth of the Elwha River and Strait of Juan de Fuca converge, with acres of sandy beach to romp on. When you arrive at your destination the refreshing sea air tells you immediately that this is a very special home-away-from-home and the evergreens whisper their welcome.

While oriented to the woods (and fenced) for maximum privacy, guests are lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf. Located 1/4 mile from the mouth of the Elwha River and access to Freshwater Bay, this property is popular with surfers, as they are within walking (there is also beach parking) distance of a great surfing area. We have also hosted guests interested in the Elwha Dam Removal Project, including the film crew who did the story of the river in a documentary called "The Breach".

Snuggle by the fireplace before slipping into the silky comfort of the European linens on your Cal-King canopied bed. Even rainy days are fun when you can listen to the rain falling on your tin roof. Enjoy cooking in a well-equipped kitchen (I don't like to cook on vacation but guests who enjoy cooking have said we have the best equipped kitchen of any vacation rental they have stayed in) or savor the unique flavors of the Pacific Northwest at one of the many excellent restaurants in town. (We are eight miles west of downtown Port Angeles, the park entrance for Hurricane Ridge or Victoria ferries).

Take a dip in your double fenced private hot tub, count all the stars you can't see living in town and revel in the smell of the sea. We frequently get guests who tell us 'last night was the best I've slept in ages'. While often used by lovers who want to get away from it all, (and frequent honeymooners), the house has been enthusiastically received by families wanting a unique location to use as their home base while they explore the wonders of the Olympic Peninsula or day-trip to Victoria, British Columbia. Originally with only a master bedroom with large Cal-King bed, we have added a second bedroom with a plush Eastern King bed, both covered with imported Italian linens. Also on display, our dad's piano from when he ran away from home to become 'a serious jazz musician,' before he grew up, married our mom and became Washington's best known jazz educator, Dr. Ralph Mutchler.(Google Jon Mutchler and a large posting about dad comes up, photos and all). We are currently collecting photos from the various jazz clinics and stage band festivals to post above the piano--our very first guest actually said, 'No way-I knew Ralph!' If you can provide one of the missing stage band tapes, stay one night free! In the living room the couch also converts to a 'full' sleeper (two small kids or one teenager) with tempurpedic foam added for comfort. Some guests could care less about TV but we do have a brand new Smart TV (Netflix, Hulu, etc) an expansive DirecTV package and tons of DVD's.

Kid-friendly amenities include board games, glider, dozens of Disney videos, a fire pit for weenie and marshmallow roasts plus, walk or drive to the beach.

The owners of the Love Nest live next door and are delighted to help their guests plan their excursions, recommend wonderful places to dine or even arrange for a masseuse to attend you after a full day of activities.

This funky, quirky dwelling was just right for our all-girls spring break getaway. The kitchen is especially well equipped. We enjoyed the hot tub with plenty of towels and robes provided. Great hike along the Elwha river as it heads out to the straits. We'll be back!!!

We will be back!

We wanted a weekend out of the city and this place lived up to what we hoped for. It was charming, comfortable, clean, and had an amazing hot tub. The bathroom was luxuriously spacious and as one of us is a wheelchair user, this was a welcome and exciting surprise. It also had its own jacuzzi tub that fit both of us and was a great alternative to the hot tub when we decided to just not go outside into the cold that day! The bedroom we stayed in was the one with the romantic 4 post canopy bed and although Allen told us the other bed was the better one, the one we slept on was actually really comfortable and we both slept well! Lots of sheet and blanket layers to choose your warmth level and many comfortable pillows are offered. The kitchen is great for cooking, but you should bring your own oil and spices as there was salt and pepper and a few other things but not much else. If you forget something there are several little stores about 10-20 mins away so it was easy to get everything we needed for delicious gourmet meals! We didn't end up going out to eat but heard some great reviews for a few local places. The house was so comfortable that we really only ventured out to wander through the neighborhood and we caught the sun through the trees over the beach along our walk. No immediate beach access but you can see it through the other properties and if we had gone far enough we probably would have found a place to get through. Otherwise we were perfectly happy reading on the giant cozy couch or watching Netflix on the smart tv. There are huge collections of books and movies there as well.

A notice for other wheelchair users: The whole house is fairly accessible, but the entrance from the kitchen/living room area into the bedrooms has two options, and the one through the French doors is a steep bump that is not very accessible, but the other side through the regular doorway is flat and wide enough to get through safely. the carpet in the canopy bed bedroom, which connects to the hot tub and to the giant bathroom, is thick and lush and hard to push through in a manual chair. The kitchen counters and island are pretty high, as are the cabinets, so might not work for some people.

It was a great weekend and we want to go back in the summer, when we can enjoy the warmer weather and the big fenced in yard with our dogs. We didn't get a chance to meet Lyndee but Allen was so sweet and helpful in greeting us and showing us around! thank you!

I really wanted to fall in love with this place...but...

  • 2 of 5

The hot-tub was great, the walk to the beach was perfect, the selection of books and games was fantastic. But there is a but and here it is: It was dirty. All rental houses are a bit on the musty, well worn side...that is not what I am talking about. This place was gross. Our first night we pulled back the sheets to get into bed and they were COVERED in dog hair, dirt, pine needles, etc which is completely unacceptable and a bio-hazard. So first night of vacation, we had to scour the home to try to find clean sheets at 11pm. The next day we realized that the dishwasher sounded like it was running but the pump wasn't pushing water through. My husband fixed that but it was no surprise that every dish we pulled out of the cupboard was dirty. There were old wrappers pushed into the couch cushions and the only sponges available were old and smelly. Here is the worst part. I would not be posting this review if anyone had tried to make this better. The morning after the sheets and dishwasher, I called the owner and he came over but made no attempt to take responsibility or offer an kind of discount or apology. When I got home, I sent vacation rentals an email voicing my concerns but they also did nothing to show they cared about this experience. If either of those interactions would have made me feel like there was care or concern, I wouldn't be posting this. It's one thing to make a mistake. It's a whole other thing to refuse to take responsibility. The reason I am still giving it two stars is proximity to a great beach and a clean (ironic) and inviting hot tub. It was way to expensive for the amount of cleaning/handyman work we had to do during our stay. At the price you will pay to stay here, I recommend going somewhere that is cleaner.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your honest and well meant criticisms. The linen issue has been investigated and corrected. The maid is excellent and we re confident that the place will be clean for future guests. Our prices are competitive with any other venue in this area and is a good deal because of privacy, roominess, and a great hot tub. I am always available for problems and tourist advice any time day or night. I am a light sleeper and we are just next door. Give us a visit-you will like what you experience.

Amazing location, huge converted barn

  • 5 of 5

Great place to hunker down for Christmas. Two bedrooms, huge bathroom with jacuzzi tub -- and hot tub was just perfect. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook all our meals. Short walk to the mouth of the Elwha River. Beautiful area, attentive but hands-off hosts -- perfect place to stay.

We had such an amazing stay!! Allen was so kind and met us when we arrived to show us around. The house was very sweet and perfect for our family, including our dog. We enjoyed how close the beach was and relaxing in the hot tub each night. The beds were very comfy, I slept better then I do in my own bed. We only wish we could have stayed longer.
