Family Cottage On Lake Michigan With A Private, White Sand Beach

Space 2,300 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Shingle-sided Cottage On Lake Michigan. 5 Bedrooms, Sleeps 10.

Attention: We will begin taking reservations on Oct. 1 for the 2019 season. Priority is given to returning guests. Rates may increase slightly each year.

This rustic, shingle-sided cottage is one of the last of its kind in Leland. The beach is literally out the back door and Lake Michigan is a constant presence. Nearly all the rooms, including both the dining room and the deck where we take our meals, overlook it. No matter the weather, you'll hear the waves and sometimes the wind in the surrounding pines.

With five bedrooms — three in the main house and two in "the annex" just across the deck from the main house — as many as 10 adults can sleep comfortably; children can double up. There are two-and-a-half baths, with a clawfoot tub in the main house and a shower in the annex. There are canoes and bicycles for your use, as well as a Sunfish sailboat for experienced sailors, and we provide linen and towels, so there’s no need to bring those.

About Mandy Bankson

The cottage has been in our family for four generations. A pair of great-grandparents rode here on horseback from Indiana to celebrate their honeymoon.

Mandy Bankson purchased this cottage in 1930

Why Mandy Bankson chose Leland

It's as if Pineacres has been preserved in amber. It is a rustic gem that conjures up a time when things at least seemed simpler than they are today. If your childhood included summers at a treasured lakeside cottage where the days were long and the nights were gentle, then Pineacres will rekindle those memories. And if you want your children to experience the same, then Pineacres is for them, as well.

For years our cottage has been a place to connect with family and friends, a place to while away the hours in conversation, or catch up on our reading, or play a game of cards. If you like, it can be a respite from a world of incessant demands for your attention, a respite from the world of pixels and tiny screens.

It's a place where sunlight drifts through the pines and the white birches sway in the breeze. A place where the sound of children's laughter competes with the waves rolling on the beach. A place to gather stones and cook good meals and be present for one another.

If it's true that for everything there is a season, then the summer is for Pineacres.

What makes this cottage unique

It's undeniable that the cottage's location is it's prime attraction. Lake Michigan in all its moods is a giant presence there. But for some visitors, the cottage's charm rivals the lake as a reason for a journey. Little has changed at Pineacres over the decades. The fieldstone fireplaces are as solid as ever. The delicate paper lanterns that hang from the living room's exposed beams have survived. There's old, wavy glass in some of the multi-paned windows and for generations the cast iron, claw foot tub has been the place for children to take their Saturday night bath.

Admittedly, the cottage is not to everyone's taste. The kitchen is fully equipped but lacks a dishwasher. And the shower is perfectly fine but nowhere near luxurious.

Pineacres harkens back to when Leland's Fishtown was not a tourist attraction but a genuine fishing port; a time when the boats were made of wood and the men were made of iron, rather than the other way around, to quote an old-timer. It's the cottage's similar lack of pretension that we love.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We love Pineacres. It seems like home--just like a cottage would be if our grandparents/great-grandparents had been there long ago, and our family over the years. The books! We spent much time just browsing the shelves. It was such a joy to be both in the woods and so close to Lake Michigan, a moody inland sea. All five bedrooms face the lake; everybody had a view. Using grandma's dishes was a joy, and how unexpected it was to recapture the pleasure of doing the dishes together. We watched the sunsets, sat by the fire, read, got caught up, and told stories. We walked into Leland, which, in the first week of September, was mostly tourist-free. We took day trips, hiking to Pyramid Point with its great view of Sleeping Bear, visiting a winery or two on the Mission Peninsula, marveling at the treasures at the Music House Museum in Traverse City. And we read the New York Times every day, picking it up at the Leland Mercantile, along with a delicious pie or two. Huge bonus: a wide, sandy beach, with a great, panoramic view. A wonderful week. We can't wait to go back next summer.

What a wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

This was my family's second year at Pineacres, and we hope we'll have many more annual visits to this spectacular cottage on Lake Michigan's Good Harbor Bay. The owners and caretakers are more like family than people with a lakeside property for rent.

Wonderful summer cottage on Lake Michigan

  • 5 of 5

Pineacres takes me back to the Leland of my childhood. We spent a week there with our whole family (7 adults and 3 kids, aged 2, 3, and 4) and loved the setting, with great views of Lake Michigan, the ease of walking down to the beach, suppers outside watching beautiful sunsets. The cottage is probably much like it was when it was built a hundred years ago--comfortable for all ages, impervious to sandy feet, filled with historic pictures of Leland, suffused with the smells of the pine trees that surround it. It is a real summer cottage, designed as an escape from ordinary life--a place to read and nap and play games. It was just perfect!

If the write up of Pineacres resonated with you, the "getting away from it all" and "stepping back in time" appeal will exceed your expectations. It's exactly what we as a family have been looking for since we started renting homes along Lake Michigan several years ago. As my mother summed it up on our first night there, "Now I can die happy, having found the cottage I've always wanted." Safe to say as long as this cottage remains a rental, we will be renting! What a fantastic week we had!

Dreaming of our stay at Pineacres.....

  • 5 of 5

Pineacres is such a special place. Just as the video shows, it is 1 minute from a beautiful and pristine beach and our children played in the sand from dusk until dawn. When we arrived, the house was immaculate, not a speck of sand on the floor. The antique beds were comfortable and there were so many friendly and helpful notes around the house to tell us about local attractions. We fell asleep to the sound of the water every night and ate dinner on the outside deck between the main house and the annex. It was glorious.

We loved the rustic cottage in the woods. If you are ready to disconnect from the internet, tv, and your cell phone in order to listen to the sounds of birds and the beach, then this is the place for you.

Enchanted Cottage...a Trip Back in Time

  • 5 of 5

The moment I walked in to Pineacres...I fell in love. A step back in time...a simpler time. No wifi, no tvs, no dishwasher...but no shortage of books, history, views, sounds of the lake lapping the shore, evening fires, boat rides, rock collecting and did I say history? We felt privileged to be able to share in the story of Pinacres and the surrounding land which unfolds so beautifully in Anne's notes and journal entries included in the history of Leland, Indiana Woods and Pineacres. When not at the beach, biking into Leland, or hiking the area...I loved to wander the cottage and absorb all the details. The views from the bedrooms were amazing. To be able to sit up in bed and see lake Michigan was a real treat. Thank you for entrusting us and sharing the momentos, photos and lovely antiques throughout the cottage. We added our own heart stone to the mantel in the annex and I collected 3 of my own 'wish stones' to start my collection around our door in Ohio. We would love to come back next year. Thank you for a magical week.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, located in Leelanau County, has been named Good Morning America's Most Beautiful Place in America. It boasts 64 miles of beaches along Lake Michigan, two islands, 26 inland lakes, more than 50,000 acres of land, and the monumental sand dunes from which it gets its name.

The village of Leland is filled with galleries and restaurants. Northern Michigan's commercial fishing heritage remains alive in Fishtown. Walk along the docks, amongst the weathered fishing shanties, smokehouses, racks of drying fishing nets, and fish tugs on the Leland River, and you can imagine what it would have been like in the early 1900s to live and work in this small fishing village, nestled along the shore of Lake Michigan. Fishtown still operates as one of the only working commercial fishing villages in the state of Michigan.

Our cottage is located in Indiana Woods, a short walk from Fishtown, and reached by a private road.
