Why Jean Phelps chose West Colorado Springs

As a little girl growing up in western Kansas, my mother and I would take several trips a year out to Colorado, riding the Cog Railway every August. As the Cogway traveled toward the summit of Pikes Peak, I remember many times gazing over at this particular cottage situated on the mountainside dreaming about what it would be like to own that home. After being in the previous owners family for over 100 years, I magically had the opportunity to purchase the historic hillside home this past year. Spending time at the vacation home has brought back special memories of the time I spent here with my mother (who has sadly passed away). I hope all guests who stay here will feel how special (in so many ways) this property really is.

What makes this cottage unique

My husband and I couldn't believe this property was finally for sale after being in the same family for 115 years. We jumped at the chance to own this particular cottage located in such a special area on the edge of the historic town of Manitou Springs. We can smell the fresh mountain air while sitting on the balcony overlooking Ruxton Creek and hear the Cog Railway blow it's horn and watch people ride up to the summit of Pikes Peak, waving as they go by. We can walk a few hundred feet and be at the beginning of Barr Trail, Manitou Incline, and the Cog Railway. The historic cottage is located at the end of a road where only residents are allowed so it allows for unparalleled privacy, quiet, and unbeatable views of surrounding mountains, wildlife, and the valley below.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The house was wonderful. I have no idea why every rating isn't a 5. I guess the stairs surprises people? But I came to run and did the Incline 3x. Great time and great bed!

beautiful getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had so much fun staying here. We especially enjoyed basking in the sun on the balcony with our morning tea taking in the fresh air and view (In February!). It was perfect for our family to make meals and visit and also close to everything we wanted to do.

Stairway to heaven!

  • 5 of 5

Lots & lots of stairs to a really unique & well cared for home. It was beautiful & cozy! The kitchen was amazingly equipped & easy to find things. We did loads of cooking and grilling. Baby gate was handy for our crawler & washer/dryer was also appreciated. The 3rd floor loft area (shared with 4 beds - 2 on either side) wasn't as private or quiet as I wanted but the character & age of the home made up for it. Jean was easy to contact & very helpful. The views were lovely!

The Ruxton Retreat was a charming getaway surrounded by nature’s finest views

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time with family over the Christmas break at the Ruxton Retreat. The home is full of character and comfort. It is located right across from the Incline and is just minutes away from downtown Manitou Springs. The view of the mountains from the wrap—around porch were stunning.

The home has two living areas on separate and plenty of sleeping space for a large family. The eat-in kitchen is well-equipped, allowing me to cook almost every meal for our family. Everything is immaculate and the feeling of warmth from the owners spills over in every detail - from the fine linens to the claw foot tub.

Jean was extremely easy to work with and was responsive in every way!

Christmas for family of 7

  • 3 of 5

First the positive: this older home has been updated for rental. The two bathrooms are nicely redone. Location is fun as it is within walking distance to the Manitou incline and cog railroad.

Though there was room to sleep 6+ people, there is not a good space for gathering. The rooms are oddly configured with lights and outlets in strange places. This might be less of a problem in the summer as there are gathering spaces outside. Finally, we appreciate what it must take to rent out a home, but the rules were so extensive for this place, that we were in constant fear of doing something wrong .

Owner's Response: We are somewhat confused because we have been told the cottage has been a comfortable gathering spot for a family of seven. We have an Agreement that we feel comfortable with which protects guests and us.

Not for kids

  • 3 of 5

We had a great time but... the house has small rooms, 3 floors, a glass kitchen table and small steep steps to the house. The view is awesome!!

Owner's Response: We thank this guest for his review. Some of our rooms are smaller than rooms in open-concept homes built today. Our cottage was one of the first built in Manitou Springs (on the Historic Registrar) by a man who homesteaded the area with 40 acres of farmland on the steep, rocky hillsides. The home has been enlarged, entirely remodeled and updated through the years. When we purchased the cottage, our son was 4 years old, and he loved going up and down the stairs. We felt comfortable allowing him to do because he was well-balanced and careful. Although, we realize some guests with young children who aren't used to stairs might think otherwise.

Unique, cozy getaway close to town.

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this house. It's close to the town of Manitou but when sitting on the porch in the morning drinking tea, you really feel like you are away from it all. The house itself is very unique; it has been updated but retains a unique, eclectic style with the right amount of vintage touches to remind you that this house has been around for a while. There are a lot of steps but when you see hikers descending from their early morning Incline hike, you feel silly complaining about a few stairs.
