Why Jean Phelps chose West Colorado Springs

As a little girl growing up in western Kansas, my mother and I would take several trips a year out to Colorado, riding the Cog Railway every August. As the Cogway traveled toward the summit of Pikes Peak, I remember many times gazing over at this particular cottage situated on the mountainside dreaming about what it would be like to own that home. After being in the previous owners family for over 100 years, I magically had the opportunity to purchase the historic hillside home this past year. Spending time at the vacation home has brought back special memories of the time I spent here with my mother (who has sadly passed away). I hope all guests who stay here will feel how special (in so many ways) this property really is.

What makes this cottage unique

My husband and I couldn't believe this property was finally for sale after being in the same family for 115 years. We jumped at the chance to own this particular cottage located in such a special area on the edge of the historic town of Manitou Springs. We can smell the fresh mountain air while sitting on the balcony overlooking Ruxton Creek and hear the Cog Railway blow it's horn and watch people ride up to the summit of Pikes Peak, waving as they go by. We can walk a few hundred feet and be at the beginning of Barr Trail, Manitou Incline, and the Cog Railway. The historic cottage is located at the end of a road where only residents are allowed so it allows for unparalleled privacy, quiet, and unbeatable views of surrounding mountains, wildlife, and the valley below.

The house was wonderful. I have no idea why every rating isn't a 5. I guess the stairs surprises people? But I came to run and did the Incline 3x. Great time and great bed!

Well equipped, roomy, and very cozy

We stayed here for 3 nights and loved it. Close to everything we needed and far enough away where we enjoyed the quiet. Lots of room and comforts. Without a doubt we will book here again on our next trip to Colorado.

Beautiful house, perfect location!!

We absolutely loved staying at the Ruxton Retreat! The location was PERFECT, literally minutes from all the big sights, garden of the gods, Cave of the Winds, cliff dwellings, pikes peak, the incline (3 of our family did it and it took them 4 hours) and of course Manitou Springs, which is such an awesome town. The house was just beautiful, and had everything we needed, I so appreciated all the extras, like plenty of toilet paper (some VRBO’s only provide one roll), super nice towels and AMAZING linens. And even lots of extra blankets for cuddling on the porch! Speaking of the porch, that was probably our favorite spot, what a view!!! Also the separate tv watching areas were great, the upper level was great if we all wanted to watch something together and the lower level was perfect for 2-3 people. I was a big fan of the sleeping arrangements too, the master on the second floor was wonderful and our four kids (ages 12-20) slept on the top floor, two on each side, it was charming! The second floor bathroom was beautifully done. I guess if I was FORCED to say a negative, it would be the steep stairs (inside and out) but you really do get used to them after you get used to the elevation (we’re from Minnesota). Overall it was just a wonderful stay and we made great memories and would love to come back!!

Charming and unique

Snuggled up every morning with coffee and a blanket on the porch and watched the sunrise listening to the creek....so relaxing. This historic Manitou house has been updated into a charming, quirky getaway. Loved the chandeliers, restored beadboard ceiling, incredible linens and comfy beds. Great wifi and lots of channels so we could watch our team in the NCAA. Hiked up Ruxton and wandered Manitou. Ate breakfast at Mountain Shadows a Diners, Drive Inns and Dives restaurant in Old Colorado City....pretty amazing and had an incredible meal at the Melting Pot. Spent part of a day at Garden of the Gods. Everything is close Just know there are lots of steps, but the ambience is worth it.

beautiful getaway

We had so much fun staying here. We especially enjoyed basking in the sun on the balcony with our morning tea taking in the fresh air and view (In February!). It was perfect for our family to make meals and visit and also close to everything we wanted to do.

Stairway to heaven!

Lots & lots of stairs to a really unique & well cared for home. It was beautiful & cozy! The kitchen was amazingly equipped & easy to find things. We did loads of cooking and grilling. Baby gate was handy for our crawler & washer/dryer was also appreciated. The 3rd floor loft area (shared with 4 beds - 2 on either side) wasn't as private or quiet as I wanted but the character & age of the home made up for it. Jean was easy to contact & very helpful. The views were lovely!

The Ruxton Retreat was a charming getaway surrounded by nature’s finest views

We had a lovely time with family over the Christmas break at the Ruxton Retreat. The home is full of character and comfort. It is located right across from the Incline and is just minutes away from downtown Manitou Springs. The view of the mountains from the wrap—around porch were stunning.

The home has two living areas on separate and plenty of sleeping space for a large family. The eat-in kitchen is well-equipped, allowing me to cook almost every meal for our family. Everything is immaculate and the feeling of warmth from the owners spills over in every detail - from the fine linens to the claw foot tub.

Jean was extremely easy to work with and was responsive in every way!
