Wind Rose has been totally renovated inside with beautiful bright new interiors. Summer rentals are minimum 7 days except when longer rentals have created a shorter opening. Shorter summer rentals, when available, are $250/night. Fall, winter and spring rentals are minimum 3 nights.
Wind Rose is a three bedroom 750ft2 water view shoreline cottage with a cozy, classic cottage feel located across the road from a fen and sand beach in Oliphant on Lake Huron.
Fully renovated, new features include 2nd bathroom with compact washing machine, patio doors from the master bedroom to a sheltered sitting area, all new mattresses and canadian made feather duvets (alternatives available for those with allergies), new appliances including a dishwasher, more kitchen counter space, luxury fittings in the main bathroom, and other details for your comfort and enjoyment.
The living room faces the lake with large windows. A bistro table and chairs are a favoured spot to enjoy the view, as are the lounge chairs and outdoor bench in the front. Off the living room is the front bedroom ( The Green Room ) with a double bed. Behind the living room is the fully equipped kitchen with tongue and groove pine cathedral ceiling, fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle, blender & coffee/espresso maker.
All dishes, utensils, cookware & cleaning supplies are provided. The kitchen has an eat-in dining area with table and chairs.
On the south side of the kitchen are two rooms: the bunk bed room, and the beautiful 4 piece bathroom with jetted tub and thermostatic rain shower head.
Behind the kitchen is a passageway with coat hooks leading to the 2nd bath and master bedroom, now with a queen sized bed, cathedral ceiling, ceiling fan & electric fireplace. The whole back area can be private to the master bedroom if desired.
The cottage has a deck leading off of the kitchen, part of the deck has a view of the lake, the rest is private and/or covered. A gas bbq is provided.
The backyard is grassy, and has a double hammock, fire pit & picnic table. Just off the master bedroom, the new sitting area features an outdoor bistro table and chairs, a bench and a contained fire area for cool evenings.
Across the road from the cottage is a trail that leads down to the sand beach on Lake Huron. The water is approximately 300 metres through open fen and sand from the front of the cottage.
The beach is shallow entry, great for kids and warms up quickly, after a time drops off to a perfect swimming depth. Last year ( 2015) the water was higher than usual all summer, covering the sand beach and leaving instead a flat rock area for sunning and water access. The swimming was still gorgeous, clean, clear and sandy bottomed, and several sandier beach areas are within a short distance. It looks like the water levels will be high again this year.
The cottage is located on a lightly trafficked narrow paved road which is great for walking, biking or roller blading.
There are many kilometres of trails for hiking through the woods behind the cottage; waterproof boots can be useful. Easier, drier trails may be accessed by way of a former through-road found less than 1/2 kilometre North of the cottage. Trail maps are provided in the cottage along with local information. Walk or drive to a large nearby sand dune with picnic tables.
There is a pay phone in Oliphant at the Campground, this is also the closest wee store. Cell phone reception, somewhat sadly, is now quite consistently good at the cottage.

About the area:
A World Biosphere Reserve!
The Beautiful Bruce Peninsula is a treasure trove of sandy beaches, limestone escarpment, blue waters, lighthouses, harbours, waterfalls, rare plants, amazing gardens, wide open spaces, hiking trails, farmer’s markets, cozy cafes, talented artists & musicians.
Diversity abounds, as every few kilometers of shoreline offers a different, soul satisfying vista.
The shoreline near the cottage has become a kite boarding enthusiasts paradise (great to watch!), and equipment and facilities for all water sports (including scuba diving in Tobermory) are available nearby.
Wind Rose cottage is situated on the Bruce Peninsula Shore, looking west over Lake Huron. 10 km to the south of us is world famous Sauble Beach, 11 km of sandy beach with Blue Flag designation.
Wiarton is only 15 minutes away with shopping, wellness options, a beautiful water front park, friday farmer’s market, and hiking trails.
Beyond those in Sauble & Wiarton, more shops, theatres & museums are 30 minutes away in Owen Sound, or Southampton & Port Elgin and the golf enthusiast can choose from several courses including the world class Cobble Beach Golf Links.
**See more information under "location" about nearby hikes/bike ride destinations.**
The cottage has neighbours on either side nicely screened by mature cedars and fencing. The backyard is quite private; out front, it's a friendly area and people will wave and say hello when they are walking by. You can hunker down and enjoy a whole week right there, or you can take advantage of many great options to explore the wider area.
Being shore, it's mostly flat making biking and hiking smooth. Here are some of the bike/hikes you can choose from: ( of course you can drive to any of these spots too!)
Under 1 km to Lonely Island Beach: Also great for kids with an even longer shallow entry, just for a different view. There is a port-a-pottie on the spot. Go N on Bay Street from the cottage and then turn left/west onto the Causeway at Lonely Island Drive. Carry on for a circle tour around the island if you'd like, with a stop at the public dock. Use caution, there is Poison Ivy on the Island, but not to my knowledge at the beach area accessed off the causeway.
2km to the Campground Store: You will pass the Oliphant dock with public washrooms and several coves that are popular with kiteboarders. The campground store has an ice cream freezer. Go north on Bay street from the cottage to the stop sigh, turn right and the campground store is at the top of the hill on your right.
3km to Fen Boardwalk: The boardwalk through the fen has interpretive information about the unique flora and fauna of the area. Across from the north end of the boardwalk is access to a conservation area with swings that is often home to nesting egrets. Go North on Bay St 3 km and you will see the boardwalk on your right.
4.5km to Sand Dune: A large sand dune with picnic tables is a fun place to play! Go South on Bay street from the cottage 2km to South Oliphant Road. Turn left/east. At the stop sign, turn North. this is a busier road but there is a bike lane. You will come to the dune on your right.
Under 5km to Sauble Falls Provincial Park: You can see the falls from the road or pay the day use fee to go in and play in them. There are washrooms, playground, picnic tables and kayak or paddle boat rentals there too. Follow directions to the dune above but turn south/right at the main road instead. The falls will be on your right.
7km to the mouth of the Sauble River/North End of Sauble Beach: Follow directions to Sauble Falls above, turn right/west off the main road toward the entrance to the provincial park. Carry on following this road past a breakfast restaurant with view of the river ( at the Kit Wat motel) and a little grocery store. This road takes you to the lovely spot where the mouth of the Sauble River and the north end of Sauble Beach meet.
8km to 6th St Sauble Beach: follow the shore road 1 km further south from the river to find restrooms, a playground, and a lunch bar with scooped ice cream. This end of Sauble Beach is family friendly and much less crowded!
