Overview

About the property

Sleeps 4, Fully-Furnished, Parking Spot, Close To Capitol, Metro And Smithsonian

Renovated in 2015 and beautifully decorated, this separate entrance carriage house has hardwood floors, high ceilings and everything you’ll need for your stay on the Hill. The bedroom has a four-posted queen-size bed, dresser, marble vanity and a cozy armchair. The French doors open onto a secret garden, the perfect place to enjoy breakfast. The bathroom is done in creamy Travertine with a large tiled shower. The great room has a day bed with a hidden pull-out trundle bed, two arm chairs, a ladder bar and a flat screen TV, and a multi-function antique table: Tucked into an alcove it’s the ideal space to eat a sandwich, work on your laptop or charge your electronics. At mealtime pull it away from the wall and pop up the sides for a table that seats six. Let us know how many bistro dining chairs you’ll need. Along the back wall the fully-outfitted kitchen has a full-size, 4 burner stove, sink, and 5 ft. refrigerator. Off-street parking for one car is included. There is no washer/dryer in the apartment but a laundromat is 7 blocks away.

Please note our other VRBO properties -- 601103 is just across the patio from the carriage house, and 1056814 is just down the street.

About Hilary Benson

The Kelly family is the second family to live in the main house, which was built in 1876 by Maj. Samuel Walker for his family.

Hilary Benson purchased this apartment in 1971

Why Hilary Benson chose Eastern Market

One of the premier properties on Capitol Hill, the carriage house, the stable and the east side of this Victorian house were completed in 1876. By 1886, Maj. Samuel Walker had more money and ten children so he added the west side of the house, the third floor and the porches in the style of Charles Eastlake, the English architect who simplified Victorian architecture and flattened its rounded gingerbread. All of the first floor ceilings—except the hall—are tin and so is a bedroom ceiling on the second floor.

What makes this apartment unique

One of the great pleasures of the main house is that it remains much as it was when first built. Modernizing was done slowly, with care and caution. On the chance that electricity was just a fad, Major Walker only electrified every other arm of the chandeliers in the living room and the study and left the others as gas jets. The gaslights still work--and so does the electricity.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a wonderful stay. Perfect little carriage house that is beautifully appointed in a fantastic location (6min from Cannon)! I hope to stay there again.

Trip to Museums

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the carriage house and had a great time. Everything was well taken care of and the location was top notch. Beautiful neighborhood in walking distance to restaurants, Capitol Building and museums. So much better than staying in a hotel and more reasonable as well.

Perfect for our Needs

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect choice for the time we spent in Washington. It was close to everything and very comfortable. Hilary was very sweet and made sure we had everything we needed. I would absolutely stay here again for the next visit!

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our time in DC and staying here made it very convenient. Short walk to the capital, Union Station and food. Beautiful area. My wife said she would stay here again so it got her vote of approval. I would as well. But it was tight for the 4 of us. We have 2 teenagers. For 2 people this place is great, for 3 good, for 4 ok. We did not spend much time in the house not sleeping, so was not that big of deal. The house was nicely furnished. The beds were fairly comfortable, equal to most hotels but they are starting to feel their age. But beds are always subjective... The main room stays fairly light at night so if your kids need it dark bring them sleeping mask. The bathroom was very nice, up to date, and clean. Had plenty of hot water for our family of 4. We did not use the fold out table in main room much because it is right in the entrance walkway and one of the chairs was very rickety. The little kitchen was great and everything worked. It does not have a washer or dryer, we wish it did, but it does have the hookups for one so maybe they will add one in the future. The keys to the gate and door are a little tricky. But again overall we enjoyed our time and would rent this house again. It was also our first time using HomeAway and everything went smoothly...

Spring Break

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay, nice and quiet and close enough to walk to everything; be it the mall or the metro to head across the river.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you loved the apartment, Sandra. We are pretty spoiled for location: The kids in our neighborhood grow up sledding on the Capitol grounds and visiting the children's room at the Library of Congress. We love it when visitors get to enjoy the area too. All the best, Hilary

Car: not necessary

The carriage house is located only a few blocks to the east of the U.S. Capitol building. You could spend all your time in our neighborhood -- Capitol Hill -- eating, window shopping, poking into galleries and exploring. But the National Mall parkland, Smithsonian museums and national monuments are just a stone's throw away. You can't be better situated to explore all that DC has to offer.
