Hale Keaukaha is a majestic and elegant 1937 home perfectly situated across from Hilo’s Richardson’s Beach Park, a wonderful small black sand beach ideal for snorkeling, surfing, swimming, kayaking and sunbathing. Minutes from downtown Hilo, and the airport, the location is convenient and picturesque. Your stay at Hale Keaukaha will be an authentic and luxurious Hawaiian experience.

Perfect for couples - ask if REDUCED RATE for two people is available during spring and fall seasons.

About Hale Keaukaha

A one-of-a-kind kamaaina home in Hilo. Styled for Hawaii, with a roof design of Hawaiian architecture called a Dickey roof that has a Polynesian style inspired by Kamehameha V's beach house in Waikiki. The floors in the main house are ohia wood, unique to Hawaii.

In the neighborhood called Keaukaha, about which songs are written and hula performed. The coastline is a string of beach parks, some with black sand and many with water access. This is a local playground. The water near the shore is clear with excellent snorkeling. Sea turtles come in to rest on the rocks across the street from the house.

The front bedroom looks down the driveway at the ocean, as does the shower in the attached bath. The luxurious queen bedroom is spacious with fine linens, robes and a ceiling fan.

The master bedroom is quite large. In the back of the house looking at the lava rock seating in the back yard. The elegant king bed has fine linens and the room has a ceiling fan and walk in closet. The attached bath has been kept in the charming 1930's style with updated fixtures and amenities.

The bedroom linens are often organic, or Italian poplin sheets.

The kitchen is fully stocked with espresso/coffee maker, rice cooker, microwave, toaster oven, waffle maker, blender, good knives, wine glasses, and all kitchen utensils.

The house water is all filtered, with the kitchen having an additional filter.

Weber bbq grill is outside the kitchen.

The house has a separate ohana (attached loft apartment) complete with a bedroom, half-kitchen, walk in shower and bathroom, living and dining area with the loft bedroom. (Note that this is not suitable for children.) The kitchen cabinets are koa wood, a prized Hawaii wood. The loft bedroom is paneled in lauhala, a local weave from the hala tree. The ohana has a kitchen with good espresso maker, microwave, toaster oven, blender. The ohana living room faces the green back yard and tree ferns and has a private entrance.The comfortable queen bed is in the spacious loft with skylight.

Both the ohana and the main house have 50" smart televisions, DVD players, wireless internet access. The main house has a telephone with free mainland calling.

The home features local art from Avi Kiriaty, Peggy Hopper, Roger Whitlock, Jack Lord, and other local artists.

20' ceiling in main room. Dining table, comfortable seating in living room to relax or to look out at the water; second lounging area in family room with tv, breakfast table.

Cleaning supplies are, wherever possible, organic, green, and scent free.

Hilo does have coqui frogs that chirp in the evening and an occasional rooster. We provide ear plugs for light sleepers.

House Rules

Hale Keaukaha is situated along a residential street with neighbors. We appreciate your cooperation to keep noise to a respectful level.

No smoking on property.

No parties at all, including dinner parties or off-property guests for bbqs or other casual get-togethers, or any guests not listed on the rental agreement without the prior consent of the property owners and manager.

No pets allowed.

Please let us know right away if anything gets damaged or needs fixing.

The home is appointed with books, decor and amenities to use during your stay. Please do not remove anything from the home and care for the things as your own.

Cancellations within two weeks of making the reservation that are more than 30 days before the arrival date will be charged 10%. Cancellations made more than two weeks after the booking that are more than 30 days before the arrival date will be charged 20%. Cancellations within 30 days of the arrival date will be charged 50%, and cancellations between 1 - 7 days before the arrival date will be charged 60%.

Fantastic plantation home

This secluded neat home is nestled in a tropical forest right across the road from the beach which is visible from the front of the home. Their are two living spaces with exceptional kitchens which worked great for our family of five. We saw sea turtles every day about 10 steps from the driveway; Richardson park is a locals swimming hole which was fun to witness. As with most homes in the area, there is no air conditioning which was a change from our usual 70 degree sleeping pattern but there are plenty of fans in this well stocked bungalow. We took a helicopter ride from the airport which is just minutes away flying over an erupting Kilauea; a top ten experience for our family!

Wonderful historic Hawaiian home

We simply loved our stay here. The house is beautiful and comfortable. Walk across the street to beach and lagoons. Beautiful backyard and porch to enjoy the tropical landscape in the back of the house. Clean and spacious.

When we arrived, the house was warm, but after opening it up and letting the trade winds do their thing, we were never hot or uncomfortable at any time.

Very short drive to Hilo for anything we needed. Saw whales in Hilo bay, green turtle at lagoon across the street, 45 min drive to Volcanos National Park.

Finally, we just loved the sound of the frogs in the evening. Nature at its best.

We would rent again easily.

Wonderful place, wonderful stay

I am a fan of old houses and this is a beautiful one. It is also nicely appointed. The area seems to be unique to Hawaii in that while you are swimming in alternating cold and warm ocean water with turtles and tropical fish, you are viewing the snow covered mountain and the wild coastline. Hilo itself also is unique and if you like a slow pace and a real old time feel, you will like Hilo. Highly recommend Hilo and this house.

beautiful property near beach with turtles

We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful 1930's home, updated with modern amenities. The Park across the beach was spectacular, with a short scramble to ocean fed pools where sea turtles hang out.

This House and Location couldn't be more Perfect!

This home was absolutely beautiful, the decor was elegant and upscale, the kitchen was equipped with everything you could possibly need and the bedrooms were very cozy, with a beautifully landscaped large front yard and back yard it was perfect for BBQing or enjoying your morning coffee outside. The location was perfect, close to the airport, Hilo Farmer's Market, great restaurants, Hilo Town, etc, but you still felt like you were in the country. The Beach across the street is to die for, with crystal clear water for snorkeling and viewing the sea turtles sunning on the lava, you can't beat it. I highly recommend this house!

Charming

This is a lovely older home that exudes the flavor of old Hawaii. While completely modernized, the location, view, and neighborhood is simply wonderful. We would love to spend more days here. We will rent again the next time we are in Hilo. Great for families. The home has whatever you could possibly need. Simply charming!
