Small high mountain village in the Vanoise massif in Haute-Tarentaise, isolated especially during snow periods during its past, Val-d'Isère became, thanks to the development of skiing from the 1930s, a sports resort. winter whose fame makes it one of the world capitals of skiing. On the Daille and Face de Bellevarde sites, it hosts each year Alpine Ski World Cup events (the first snow criterion since 1955). The resort was the scene of men's alpine skiing competitions at the 1992 Albertville Olympics, and hosted the 2009 Alpine Skiing World Championships. Its ski area is coupled with that of Tignes under the name Espace Killy.
