THE PROPERTY

A warm, friendly and extremely welcoming village manor house in the Midi-Pyrénées region of South West France, an ideal base for family to come together and explore all that this wonderful area of France has to offer.

Designed with family time in mind, within the old stone walls you’ll find entertainment aplenty - from the billiards room to books, toys and games. Outside the large lawned garden offers space to roam, and the alarmed swimming pool offers a cool respite for the whole family. With a gas bbq grill located on the terrace, family dinner time can easily move outside into the fresh country air.

Adults will take pleasure in the general level of comfort throughout, including the wine cellar and gorgeous custom kitchen, with high-end appliances and rich butcher block counter-tops. This sprawling family friendly home offers many comfortable venues where you can enjoy that perfect glass of Cahors wine - two rustic dining areas, a deck and patio, or one of three casual living rooms.

Sitting in the hamlet of Le Bourg, between the historic towns of Figeac and Gramat, this family home is nestled on the edge of the Causses du Quercy National Park. Drive to Cahors (60km), a dramatic town surrounded by the River Lot, to discover the eponymous style of wine produced there. An adventurous spirit will find plenty to do - exploring the caves of Le Pech Merle, Lacave and Le Gouffre de Padirac, horseback riding, canoeing, or simply going to one of the many weekly farmers markets in the local towns and villages.

The property has been sympathetically renovated throughout, ensuring that the very best of the many period features within the house have been retained, while also benefiting from the inclusion of modern and stylish fixtures and fittings.

The pool is alarmed for safety and open during the summer months of June, July, August and September.

LOCATION

Le Manoir is located in the small hamlet of Le Bourg, situated between the historic towns of Figeac and Rocamadour within the National Park known as the 'Causses Du Quercy' in south, central France. The “Causses” is an upland limestone plateau and area of outstanding natural beauty situated between the scenically stunning Dordogne and Lot river valleys and bordered by the historic towns of Cahors, Figeac, Brive-La-Gaillarde and Sarlat. Conveniently located on the border between the French administrative “departments” of the Dordogne and Lot, Le Manoir provides a unique, luxurious and convenient vacation base from which to explore and enjoy all that this wonderful region of France has to offer.

SEE AND DO

The extent of things to see and do during your holiday at Le Manoir is as diverse as the landscape itself. An ideal location to explore the Dordogne and Lot River Valleys; The Countryside of the Causses Du Quercy; Historic Castles & Chateaux; the Medieval towns of Rocamadour: Sarlat; Cahors and Figeac; The Cahors Vineyards; Enchanting Villages such as Martel, St-Cere-Lapopie and Autoire; The Caves of the Gouffre De Padirac and Lacave; Markets, Fetes and Festivals; World Leading Prehistoric Sites including the Cave Paintings of Lascaux and Le Pech Merle; Sport and Recreation activities including Kayaking, Canoeing, Rock Climbing, Paragliding, Cycling, Hot Air Ballooning, Golf, Horse Riding, Swimming Pools, Aqua Parks; Zoos and Animal Parks.

Whatever your interest, be it food; wine; history and culture; music and the arts; nature; sports & recreation - or simply just chilling-out, relaxing and taking it very easy – then Le Manoir and its surrounding area has something especially for you. Here are just a few of the many and varied activities that await you, your friends and family during your holiday at Le Manoir.

Food

The culinary home of foie gras and truffles and a region renowned for the freshness and quality of its meat, fish, cheese, fruit and vegetables, you can rest assured that a holiday at Le Manoir will satisfy the wants of every budding gastronome. Whether it’s enjoying fine-dining or wholesome country fare in one of the area’s excellent restaurants; exploring the region’s produce at the many farmers markets; or taking cooking lessons under the instruction of a experienced local chef and putting your newly honed skills to the test for friends and family in Le Manoir’s wonderful kitchen – all are possible during your holiday at Le Manoir.

Wine

With vineyards nestled either side of the delightfully meandering River Lot, immediately to the west of the historic city that gives these unique wines their name, Cahors is one of the eldest regions of wine production in the whole of France. The true birthplace of the Malbec grape, and the benchmark wine against which the South American and other New World wines of the same grape varietal are judged, the vineyards of Cahors have been producing their uniquely deep, dark, rich and powerful red wine since before the Romans invaded Gaulle. Whether it’s a bespoke visit to specific wine producers, a casual tasting tour of the Cahors vineyards or a desire to learn more about the general process of viticulture in the region, all can be arranged during your stay at Le Manoir.

Sites of Historic Interest

It’s of little surprise that a region, once occupied by the Romans, so determinedly fought over by the French and English during the Middle Ages, and more recently the focus for resistance to fascist tyranny during the Second World War, now offers the visitor such an array of fascinating historic sites, buildings, villages and towns to explore and enjoy. From the fairy tale castles of Baynac, Castelnaud and Montfort rising high above the cliffs of the Dordogne river; the picture post-card villages of Martel, St-Cirq-Lapopie and Autoire; the medieval towns of Sarlat, Figeac and Cahors; to the pilgrim site and village of Rocamadour perched precariously 1,500 ft above the Alzou River gorge – the historic sites of the region offer something of interest to everyone.

The Subterranean World

The prevalence of limestone rock throughout the region has supported the creation over millions of years of a fascinating subterranean world ready to be explored. The cave systems of the Gouffre De Padirac and Lacave are both located within close proximity of Le Manoir and offer two of the most extensive cave systems open to the public in Western Europe. Both systems offer the visitor a fabulous opportunity to explore on foot and by boat the immense caverns, stalactites, stalagmites and other rock formations that have made these systems famous.

Sites of Pre-historic Interest

Discoveries made over the course of the past century or so have confirmed that the valleys of the Dordogne and Lot have been inhabited by man and its Neanderthal ancestors for thousands of years. The intricate cave paintings of Lascaux and The Pech Merle offer the visitor a fascinating insight into the importance of this region in man's evolution.

ACCESS

Access to the property and region by road, air and rail is very straightforward. By road, Le Bourg is located approximately 20km to the east of junctions 55, 56 and 57 of the A20 auto-route, all of which are situated between the cities of Brive-La-Gaillarde (to the north) and Cahors (to the south). The A20 provides rapid connection via the motorway network to Paris and the ferry ports of the English Channel and Brittany to the north and north-west, and to Toulouse and the Spanish ferry ports of Bilbao and Santander to the south and south-west.

The region is also very well served by air with the four closest airports to Le Manoir being Brive-Le-Gaillarde; Rodez; Bergerac and Toulouse. Brive and Rodez, the closest, are located within 60 miutes drive time from the house. All four airports are served from the UK by either Easyjet and / or Ryan Air. Toulouse, the region's largest airport provides connection to international destinations.

A fabulous house in a lovely rural location Le Manoir is an excellent property
We enjoyed a brilliant family holiday at Le Manoir. The house offers an amazing amount of space for 8 people. Lovely sized pool outside and the games room was well used too. We visited many local towns and enjoyed a visit to Rocamadour. I would recommend Le Manoir to any family or group who need a big living space and it is a well maintained and presented house

A perfect stay
Our extended family of 9 had an incredible stay, took advantage of the pool table, card table, darts, swimming pool, large kitchen and all the many rooms for relaxing and eating that this lovely special home provided. Nick and Philippe were quick and considerate in all communications - thank you both for sharing your house and tending to all our needs. Le Bourg was an ideal location for us to canoe on the Lot, hike around the Dordogne and to Cirq La Popie and to visit many amazing towns and chateaux. There is an intermarche 5 mins drive away from Le Manoir in Lacapelle-Marival which is also a nice old town with a great boulangerie. Can’t recommend this place enough.

About the host

My three children and I welcome you to Le Manoir at Le Bourg. We hope you enjoy this unique property as much as we do. I was born and raised in Hertfordshire, the county located just north of London in the United Kingdom. Educated at Bishops Stortford College, and at university in London and Newcastle, I entered the property industry in London in the early 1990's. My career then took me to Beijing, China in 1996, where my three children were born and we all currently live. While we spend considerable time in Asia, we are lucky to also be able to travel regularly back to both France and England.

Why they chose this property

The son of true Francophiles, I spent countless vacations in and developed a true love for France as a child and teenager. It remained a personal goal to own a property in France - with the Dordogne and Lot regions being high on my list of preferred locations. Fueled by a love for the country, its culture, history, geographic diversity, food and wine - supported by a wish to retain a home base in Europe while my children and I continue to live in Asia - we purchased Le Manoir in 2003. The property is truly unique, full of character with many aspects of architectural interest. It is also well located to explore the Dordogne and Lot river valleys and all that this great area has to offer.
