About this property

Old Wine Domaine, stunning views, Pool, big garden with trampoline, very calm

Welcome to our lovely house in Languedoc-Roussillon. We very much hope you will enjoy your stay and have made every effort to make sure everything runs smoothly for you. We first rented this house out last year and it all went very well. We are moving to Tenerife but are still very keen to hold on to our lovely French house, so we have decided to let it out as a holiday home, and we wish you as much enjoyment here during your stay as we have experienced here over the years.

Owners Direct recommended we set the rental lower at first in order to get things going and get positive reviews, so this is what we have done ! I think you will agree that you got a great property for the price you paid, which can only be a good thing in the current economic climate !

This house is part of a former 17th century wine domaine, with a 10m x 5m fenced private pool and a separate studio/bar/kitchen/pool house. Ideal for families with children, the house has a large garden with trampoline and table tennis. Close to the much sought-after village of Colombiers and the Canal du Midi. Not overlooked.

The main house has thick walls and tends to stay cool in the summer. The summer kitchen makes a great place to hang out, providing access to the pool and is conveniently located near the pergola, an ideal place to eat outside in the shade at lunchtime. The area under the pine trees is also a good lunchtime spot. As the sun goes down, we often eat on the gravel area next to the pool, which provides stunning views of the setting sun.

The house is located in vineyards between the villages of Colombiers and Montady (both are within walking distance and have bars, restaurants, bakeries etc). The setting is very calm, with great views to the mountains and magical sunsets. There is plenty of shade if you need it.

Plenty of space for a family holiday needs some TLC
It always hard to gauge the size of a property from just photos's so we were surprised at just how large this house is. There are 4 really good size bedrooms upstairs, 1 en-suit, 3 with a shared family bathroom. In addition there is another room downstairs that can be used as a bedroom but we felt that it was a little small to be classed as a double. The lounge & dining room are also large rooms but the kitchen is tiny, when you open the oven door there is no room to move past & worktop space is quite limited, as is cupboard space for food items despite the large larder cupboard as i am not tall i could not use half of it.The annex also has a kitchen which we used whilst doing BBQ's & we moved the double bed to this room initially for my elderly parents but there are so many steps & concrete thresholds at the doors this was too unsafe so my hubby & i slept in this room. It was fine once we had got rid of all the ant's & other creatures that inhabit this space, all part of French country life, this is beautifully rural looking out on vineyards which we watched being harvested. The swimming pool area is nice but seems to be quite neglected, there was green algae in the pool which could honestly do with a really good clean. Johl is a great host he was responsive to a couple of issues that cropped up & had them sorted within good time. I would recommend this for a large family group, Thanks Johl

Vielen dank an Familie Garling

We have lived in this house since 2004 and have 2 daughters, Leora 18 and Claire 14. Karin is German and Johl is British. The girls have gone through the French school system and their first language is now French. We are moving to Tenerife but are still very keen to hold on to our lovely French house, so we have decided to let it out as a holiday home, and we wish you as much enjoyment here during your stay as we have experienced here over the years.

Why they chose this property

The nearest beach is at Valras Plage, a typically-French holiday town and only about 15 minutes away by car. Vendres Plage is also nearby and is the place to go if you want things to be a bit quieter. A little further away is Gruissan, which was the setting for the 1986 film Betty Blue.

To the north are the Montagnes Noires, providing plenty of hiking opportunities. The Gorges D'Heric provides a great walk along the river, with pools to swim in. Nearby is Canoe Tarassac where you can hire canoes. The 5km course is suitable also for all the family and there are numerous picnic spots along the way.

In addition to the many walks that are available near to the property. The Canal du Midi passes through the village and the Oppidum is an historic elevated site within walking distance that provides stunning view all around, and from where you can usually see the Pyrenees mountains.

Beziers is only 10 minutes away by car and you will be able to see the Cathedral from the road that goes past the house. If you visit the Cathedral area, don't miss the view back across towards Colombiers. Near to the Cathedral you will also find “Les Halles”, the central covered food market, open every day except Monday from 7.30am-1.30pm – it's a real culinary delight!

Nearer to home, the Butcher's shop in Montady sells excellent sausages (you buy them by the length), and their steaks are heaven but you will pay more than at a supermarket. There are 2 bakeries in Colombiers, one at the port and one in the village. The one in the village is “artisanal” which means they make their own dough. Nearby large supermarkets: Casino – large supermarket the other side of Colombiers (drive through village). Also open Sunday mornings. Aldi – Montady (the village with the tower that you can see from the garden). Lidl – Capestaing (approx 6km away, carry on past Montady, also open Sunday mornings).

What makes this property unique

We fell in love with this property many years ago. It is located in the heart of one of France's main wine regions and combines rural calm and beautiful views with a reasonable proximity to the thriving market towns of Beziers and Narbonne. During the day we love spending time around the pool, having lunch out in the garden, either under the pine trees or the pergola. The view of the sunset is magical, and provides a great setting for sitting round a table together outside for an evening meal. The house itself is very beautiful. It has high ceilings and is bright and airy, and the balcony at the rear overlooks the historic inner courtyard. There many local wines to choose from. Our favourites are “Mas Olivier – Red”, available in most French supermarkets here. If you want to buy directly from a wine producer, we recommend Domaine de la Gourgasse, which is only 5 minutes away and sells our favourite Rose wine. If you prefer white wine, a reliable local choice is Picpoul de Pinet, available in most supermarkets.
