About MICHAEL WHELAN

I grew up in Buffalo, NY and as a kid used to vacation on Keuka Lake. When I moved back into the area after living in Florida for many years one of the first things I did was to get reacquainted with the lake. Not much had changed in all those years -- Keuka is still the charming place it was.

MICHAEL WHELAN purchased this cottage in 2007

Why MICHAEL WHELAN chose Hammondsport

I liked the home we bought because of the beach, which is great for kids, and the close proximity to the restaurants and shops in Hammondsport. After I bought the property I built two large decks to take advantage of the outdoor spaces and views of the lake. The docks will accommodate most boats are great for dropping a fishing line. The water at the end of the docks is about 10ft deep, so it's also great for diving.

What makes this cottage unique

There are not many cottages this close to Hammondsport with a beach.

Wonderful cottage to vacation in! Very spacious, open and inviting. Made use of the great little beach(make sure you bring your water shoes!), which had a small fire pit for those relaxing evenings by the fire and roasting marshmallows. The docks were great for fishing from. Had fun with the kayaks and water toys! Beds were really comfortable. Close to the quaint little town of Hammondsport where we spent some time exploring. Experienced some of the great nearby wineries, the Brewery of Broken Dreams and the Curtiss Museum. It was great just to spend some time relaxing with the family. Was grateful for the background info about the cottage and the local info sent by Michael. It was very helpful. Enjoyed our week immensely!

Perfect lakefront vacation!

  • 5 of 5

After reading the other reviews here, we booked this house for a week and found it to be exactly as promised and reviewed. It is hard to find actual beach ( vs. docks) on this lake but this house has it and that was a big plus for our 2 little children. We went with another couple and the layout of the house allowed us to have somewhat separate space but also easy communal space. Cooked and ate out on the deck many times. Loved the short distance to Hammondsport and found it to be a very good location for doing other activities too. Wineries are very close and great parks, waterfalls all within short distance. Micheal provided excellent information about the house and nearby activities and responded promptly to my phone calls. We had some car issues on our 1st day and he gave us great advice on where to get it fixed! House has everything you need, so it is really easy to just show up with your suitcase! We would definitely stay here again!

Cannot imagine a better house or location!

  • 5 of 5

First - Michael is a pleasure to work with. He made booking easy and provided a fabulous info/welcome sheet of info about house.

The house is the epitome of a NY lake house though much cleaner than many i have stayed at!

Kitchen and baths have been refinished and are in great working order. Feels like home. The beds/mattresses all feel new so sleeping was awesome.

House layout is phenomenal - kitchen, master bed and big bath along with dining/great room with view of water on main floor. Third bedroom and shower room with another living/eating area down. A two levels of porches. Made entetaining a breeze. Just a perfect layout for lakes.

Big outdoor area - grass for Spikeball, beach for lounging and kayak launching. Kayaks are in great shape. Storage shack also held huge couch-like tube and a single round tube - kids loved them. Set of OBrien waterskis put to good use as well.

House is minutes out of Hammondsport - kids walked it a few nights for pizza and ice cream (Crooked Lake ice cream is quite good). So a marina and stores are less than 5 minutes away.

We had a grand time and will most definitely be back in Fall and next Summer

Perfect location, great for families!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, and I and our three sons (9,7,3) stayed here July 2-9 to enjoy the 4th of July weekend. We live in TX but are originally from the area. It was an absolute ideal location for fireworks, the beach and lawn is perfect for children to play, leave kayaks and enjoy the lake. The house has been remodeled and updated with care and class. The linens are luxury level with real cotton sheets and calming colors. They kept all the antique windows, knobs, latches so the cottage feel is not lodt but highlighted. Great parking along the other side of the road as well. It was so nice to boat down to Hammondsport for groceries, a meal, or do some laundry. The kitchen is stocked with EVERYTHING you need. And the second kitchen downstairs was perfect for having friends over for a BBQ and drinks without having people running through the upstairs of the house. The shed has so many toys, floaties, noodles, kayaks you really can come with nothing but a suitcase!

*Okay I have to give some constructive feedback*

Cons: It was pretty hot the week we stayed and that is rare for the area, (90's) so this may not be an issue- but the upstairs was slightly uncomfortable for sleeping at night. There is only one window AC unit in the master bedroom and no ceiling fans. So perhaps another window unit or a fan or two upstairs. The other things that would make this amazing property better would be some more lighting by the dock and yard for night boating or bonfires (there is none) and then some washcloths and towels in the kitchen ,(there was only a single decorative towel) and some curtains for the bedrooms on the Eastside, the sun comes is SUPER bright at 5:30 am. It's a lovely sunrise but can come a little early for kiddos needing to stay in bed a little longer.

That's really it.

Mike was a joy to rent from and extremely responsive and courteous to all your needs and questions. We will absolutely rent here again. This is a house you have got to try out, it's above and beyond any of the houses we have rented on the lake so far.

Thank you so much :)

Wonderful, family-friendly property

  • 5 of 5

We have been renting in the Finger Lakes for several years and this proved to be the nicest rental property, yet. The house was cheery, clean and well-furnished. Expansive back decks were comfortable for entertaining family and friends. The shale beach was perfect for the small grandchildren. The kayaks and water toys were enjoyed by the adults. Mike Whelan was a pleasant host and accommodated our needs. I would highly recommend this house conveniently located near the village of Hammondsport.

Great house/ great outdoor area

  • 4 of 5

We just stayed a week there with 4 adults and 4 kids under 4! Great house, very clean. Very close to hammondsport! The waterfront on this house is great, especially for kids. Decent sized lawn that leads to a walk in beach area that is large. Great for the kids to just walk in the water. Also has tons of boating/water toys in the shed that we used everyday! The owner checked in with us the first day to make sure everything was good and left a bunch of info about the house and activities to do around the area and restaurant suggestions. Great house!
