This historic stone house maintains its heritage character while offering modern amenities to make your stay comfortable. Located on a hill overlooking the town, it has water views and is a short walk to public beach, stores and restaurants
This quaint stone house was built by John Richards, founder of Richards Landing, in 1879. As one of the early historic buildings, it sits on a hill overlooking the town with water views. Within walking distance of amenities including public beach, tennis courts, restaurants, gift shops, and grocery store, it offers comfort and convenience within a heritage setting.
The Island Stone House is one of the early homes remaining on the island today. Built of stone by the founder of Richards Landing, the architectural style of the home with a mansard roof is reminiscent of the early colonial settlers on the island. The current owners have spent 9 years saving and renovating this once derelict building. Restoration work has included maintaining the original unique mansard roof while adding a wrap around porch for more living space in the summer. Original trim and baseboard was recovered and placed back into the house in order to keep its original character. While elements of the heritage home have been preserved, modern amenities have been added for the comfort of our guests including a three piece bathroom and full kitchen. The house sits upon a hilltop overlooking the town and water. Hedges and trees provide privacy so that guests can enjoy their time at the property in private but with the convenience of amenities close by including beach, restaurants, groceries and gift shops.
Richards Landing is a small town on St. Joseph Island. Boasting a world-class marina, it also offers gift shops, restaurants, grocery store, liquor store, churches and a hospital. Within a short walking distance of the Island Stone House is the public beach, playground, picnic area with public washrooms and tennis courts. The island has many attractions including museums, galleries, farm markets, hiking trails and festivals.
St. Joseph Island is a beautiful historic place. The British fort on the island which is now a National Historic Site was the location from which the first battle of the War of 1812 was launched. The island hosts many festivals throughout the year including its famous Maple Syrup Festival and is renowned for its Celtic Music festivals. A drive around the island takes you along beautiful country lanes lined with maple trees and century farms. Great Lakes Freighters pass very close to the island along Sailors Encampment which fronts onto the North Channel that connects Lake Huron to Lake Superior.
There is a causeway/bridge from the mainland to the island. It is located a short 5 minutes from the Trans Canada Highway. It is recommended that guests have their own transportation as there is not any public transportation available.
There are two bedrooms upstairs. One bedroom has a double bed while the other bedroom has two single beds. In the living room is a sofabed loveseat that pulls out into a single bed.
The only washroom is located upstairs. It is a three piece bathroom with a shower only. Please note that the shower is smaller due to the heritage character of the sloping walls of the bathroom.
While the renovations are complete, we ask for your understanding around a few cosmetic details left to be finished in warmer weather. They will not affect the comfort of your stay and for the most part are tucked away from view. We look forward to having them completed soon!
