About this property

A romantic getaway in a stunning location

Mowbarton Shepherd's Hut provides beautifully compact living accommodation for two in a delightful setting with some wonderful views. The Hut itself is built on traditional lines but with a luxury finish cleverly designed by Somerset craftsmen to combine complete 21st century comfort with the nostalgia of a rural idyll. There's seating and a table for four which cunningly converts into a cosy double bed, 'the most comfortable we've ever slept in' according to one set of guests! The Hut is fully double-glazed and insulated, and stays wonderfully warm thanks to an efficient little log-burning stove. A two-ringed hob, sink and small fridge complete the living area, and a proper loo, hand basin and ultra-modern shower cubicle complete the picture: glamping in the truest sense of the word...

The Shepherd’s Hut is set on a site of almost two acres which includes a large sloping wildlife meadow, a couple of wide expanses of grass, recently planted with a selection of native trees and shrubs. Tucked away right behind the Hut is the former farmyard which provides a secure parking area and is also the site of the vineyard shed, home to the tractor and other wine-growing equipment. Apart from the odd bustle at certain times of the season, as the tractor goes in or out (just up the lane to our own Mowbarton Estate vineyard), all the activity on this secluded site is from wildlife: there's a badger's sett on the boundary, plenty of rabbit warrens and masses of birds. Buzzards, sparrowhawks, woodpeckers, owls and goldfinches are always around, and in the spring we often hear a cuckoo. Weasels have also been spotted - and even a kingfisher!

Because of all the wildlife - and often livestock in neighbouring fields - we don’t allow pets at Mowbarton. Sorry!

As well as being the ideal getaway from everyday life, Mowbarton Shepherd's Hut is a perfect choice for birthday and anniversary weekends and for honeymoons. If you're getting married in Somerset, where better to spend your first night (or more) of married bliss? Wedding parties have also booked Mowbarton Barn, just across the lane, for friends and family before the big day. It's completely separate, in its own walled garden, but also rather handy!

And what about empty-nesters? Start your own adventurous gap year with a couple of nights in the Shepherd's Hut... Cosy and snug in winter, cool and comfortable in the summer - this is a Hut for all seasons!

Wonderful Break
First time we stayed in a shepards hut. Very clean and comfortable. Ideal for romantic stays for two. We celebrated our 10 wedding anniversary and we will gladly come back for another stay in the future. Thank you Dorothy for your kind loan of a fan. It came in very handy at nighttime. Also thank you for your bread, cheese and butter and also the Scumpy !

Delightfully different.
A fantastic quirky but cosy place to stay. Set in beautiful quiet. countryside, it’s the perfect place to get away from it all. A warm welcome awaits as well as a welcome pack of locally sourced produce ( butter, cheese, milk,. cider etc). Would highly recommend to anyone wanting something a little out of the ordinary.

Covid Ruined our holiday
Sadly due to the tier restrictions being change the actual night before(thanks Boris) we were mot able to go. Based on our communication with Dorthy I’d write her a 5 star review any day. Gave us a refund literally the night before which must have been hard on the business. This was much appreciated. Will be looking to book you up in the Summer for sure.

A Fantastically peaceful get away
I can't rate our stay highly enough. A lovely little Shepherds Hut with everything you need for a comfortable "get away from it all" visit. Our host Dorothy was very friendly and we were suprised to open the door to the hut on arrival to locally made Cider, mini loaves, cheese and chutney and also milk and butter. Delicious! As we were only there for 2 nights we made the most of our stay. We walked to Roger Wilkins Farmhouse and sampled his Ciders whilst making up our minds on which one to buy. We also bought Cheese, pickled eggs and Passion fruit curd from there. A lovely chatty man with lots of stories to tell of his years making cider and his famous visitors! We visited Glastonbury and Wells in the same afternoon for a wander around. We ate at The New Inn in Wedmore. A homely local kind of pub with lovely food. Before heading home to Oxford, we did a little ( 7 min ) detour to Burnham on Sea. A lovely sandy beach. All in all we had a lovely break and would definitely recommend Mowbarton Shepherds Hut. Thankyou to Dorothy once again :)

We started Mowbarton Barn (across the lane) in Spring 2013 and have loved welcoming guests to this beautiful location. When we acquired a couple of extra acres which had been neglected for many years, we decided it would be nice to extend our holiday letting business - but on a small scale. With so much wildlife around, and such lovely views, a form of glamping seemed the answer - and then a friend told us about Blackdown Shepherd Huts, just down the road near Ilminster...

Why they chose this property

We simply fell in love with the Blackdown Shepherd huts - and had one especially made for us!

What makes this property unique

Compact and quirky, it makes you feel you are having a bit of an adventure - but it has such a luxury finish that you are completely pampered and cosseted.
