About the property

Newly Constructed, Cozy Cottage On A 100 Year Old Apple Orchard Ranch

A charming and eclectic combination of up cycled materials we've dubbed 'country cottage meets barnyard industrial'. We've taken building supplies such as rusted iron roofing and used as siding. A redwood water tank has been utilized for window and door trim. Old plumbing supplies are now door handles or coat hangers, window shutters transformed into kitchen cabinets. While rustic, it's extremely clean, well stocked and comfortable. The location is the perfect blend of easy access and privacy. The cottage is located separately from the main house, situated approximately 500 feet away and screened by trees. There are four steps leading up to the front porch, with the residence being on one level. The elevation makes for a pleasant view across the front lawn area and out towards the distant forest. It's been situated so as to be protected from the prevailing north winds, yet soak up the southern sunshine.

About nancy puder

Being central California natives, Mendocino was an unknown destination to us until the early 70's but once discovered, it was home. We settled on the coast, embraced 'back to the land', cultivating farm animals and gardens, learning how to run chainsaws and tractors without losing digits, eventually raising two sons and countless chickens. We purchased an overgrown apple orchard, designed and built our present house and continue to love and appreciate our lives here. This is a community of artists, fierce protectors of our coast and populated by people who can be counted on for support when needed. We know and love our neighbors, even the ones that may drive you a little bit crazy.

Our own love of travel inspired us to build a small cottage that would be a comfortable home away from home. We have the space and opportunity to share a piece of our paradise with others and look forward to meeting fellow travelers.

nancy puder purchased this cottage in 1988

Why nancy puder chose Mendocino

Once you enter our gates, you won't question why we chose to live here. The property consists of gnarled, twisted apple trees, most planted around 1910. Though old and contorted, they still produce an amazing variety of heritage fruit. Open meadows are encircled by a forest of redwoods, fir and pine. The property backs up to Jackson State Forest, so essentially, we have a 90,000 acre backyard. Slopping down the south embankment approximately 1 mile, you reach Big River. Our location is close to town, yet considerably warmer than the coast. We are generally out of the fog belt with a 15-20 degree difference. What we lack in an ocean view, we make up with sunny days and open vistas.

What makes this cottage unique

Your private cottage is equipped with everything we could think of to make it special. A large front porch has a covered roof, enabling you to sit out and enjoy the view of the property, protected from drizzle and rain. A fire pit beckons for an evening spent under the stars. There's a claw foot bath tub on the back porch, just waiting for hot water and bubbles. While the tub is exposed to the elements, the deer are the only eyes that might sneak a peek.

It's a very short drive or bike ride to town. (Going to town is a cinch... all down hill. Coming back takes a bit more effort, or call and we'll pick you up :-) )

The cottage was designed and finished with attention to detail. All the amenities you need have been provided and some you may not even know you desired. Egyptian linens, down comforters, plush towels, organic soaps and lotions and numerous luxury items have been carefully chosen. We want you to feel pampered and relaxed.

Quiet, private and cozy

  • 5 of 5

Everything was there to make your stay comfortable.

Even though tiny, the kitchen was so well equipped.

Many original and creative details.

Nancy was a great host.

We would stay here again without any hesitation.

Owner's Response: Hi Luba, It was nice to see you again and have the opportunity to have a few conversations. Hearing your experience of the recent fires in our counties was touching. I'm glad you found a quiet respite from your daily stresses. Just know you are always welcome to return when your life gets to be a bit too full. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Perfect little get away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I used to enjoy B&B’s in Mendocino many years ago for our anniversaries and this year an opportunity arose to run away again to the Mendocino coast, but wanted to try someplace new and I’m so so blessed we ventured out and did!! We discovered and fell in love with Applegate Cottage and hope to return next year if not sooner. The cottage is so inviting and charming in every corner inside and out, immaculately clean and so much attention to detail with every touch of hospitality including Nancy’s farm fresh eggs, all basic staples in your kitchenette, varieties of yummy healthy snacks (and candies), adult beverage awaiting, comfy His and Hers robes, and a fire pit with lovely Adirondack chairs under the stars. We could not have been more comfortable taking in the ambiance of the property even in the winter and partly stormy weather on our trip. The overstuffed down comforter and flannel sheet bed is so luxurious you could just stay there! Time stops when you come to Applegate-just what we needed in life during a major house move and other life demands!! I hope Nancy keeps this beautiful place open for many years to come for visitors because we found our new favorite sentimental spot tucked away just a couple miles out of town. So quiet, such a retreat for our weary souls and what a blessing for our 21st anniversary!! I felt so swept away!! We have been sharing with all we know because this precious little place is totally worth the trek and it certainly has got to be the best Airbnb and hostess on the coast hands down!!!! Thank you Nancy if you read this for your kindness!! So nice to meet you too!! You are such a delightful person and a wealth of local knowledge and taking in all the worthy spots along the way!! We hope to see you again soon! I’d love to bring my mom and/or dear friend sometime too if time in this busy life allows us to!! Blessings! Robin and Edde

Owner's Response: Hi Davina, So glad you were able to enjoy your anniversary and got the chance to explore more of the coast while here, this time. I can only imagine what you must have experienced while driving thru the fire areas. I still haven't left the coast since the fires and a bit unnerved by what I will be experiencing when I do. So many of our friends lost their homes, so I'm apprehensive of seeing it first hand. For the time being, just grateful I can offer a place of respite for a few dazed souls.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

This like new, immaculate, light, and airy cottage was so difficult to leave after a week. We love Nancy who sent us great info on stops along the way as well as leaving us her fig jam, fresh eggs, freshly cut flowers, a well stocked kitchen (coffee, cocoa, spices, sauces), a firepit ready to light, propane barbeque and outside sink. We loved the dark night sky, the quiet, the beauty of the property and the proximity to town. We plan on returning soon and hopefully frequently so I'm so selfishly not telling all my favorite things about Nancy and her cottage, or, less selfishly, I won't ruin your surprises! Thanx so much, Nancy--we really appreciate you--you're the best! Val & LB

Owner's Response: Hi Val and LB, I realize I've taken a very long time in responding to you. Thank you for writing such a sweet review. You were both quite enjoyable and I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves while romping around the coast. As you know, the fires that hit the area after you left, have been quite devastating. One of the hazards of living in California. Feeling quite blessed that they never reached the coast directly but it will take quite some time to recover for Mendocino county, as well as our neighboring counties. We will rebuild and move forward. Fortunately, we're resilient. Come back when you can.

Perfect + peaceful Mendocino getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Nancy was the most wonderful host and my girlfriends and I fell in love with her place! The bungalow, or Nancy's Nest as we called it, was clean, comfortable and stocked with everything we needed. Felt like a rustic spa getaway that was still a very easy drive to town. Nancy was full of recommendations, quick to respond, and even invited us to pull veggies from her garden for dinner! We loved our stay and hope to come back very soon!

Owner's Response: I'm so grateful that you and your girlfriends were able to spend some quality time together on the property. I'd love to be a little mouse, tucked in the corner, listening to your giggles and conversations... maybe sharing a few crumbs from your meals. (Fortunately, no real mice in the cottage! Even if they are cute!) Keep planning special times together. There's no such thing as too many girlfriend trips. The memory banks need a steady deposit so you can cash in later in life!

Mendocino is a historically significant area and is a registered national monument. The town itself is architecturally designed in the Victorian style. It is preserved and restricted to further development.

Mendocino Art Center was established in the 60's by artists leaving the high cost of living in the San Francisco area. It remains a vibrant attraction for artists coming to the coast to experience further growth in their fields of interest. Amateur, as well as professional artists, find inspiration with the environment of personal support.

There are numerous art galleries scattered throughout the town, as well as interesting and unique articles for sale in the quaint shops.

The town boasts many gourmet restaurants, often farm to table style and particularly organically grown, locally produced items.

Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the trails along the ocean bluffs, hiking the miles of forest haul roads, walking the many beaches or riding bikes on roadways or trails.

Sport fishing remains a strong component, primarily salmon, rock cod, crab and ling. Shell fish such as mussels and abalone attract the water hardy.

The near by town of Fort Bragg has a gorgeous botanical garden, located on the headlands. A full day can be filled strolling the gardens, walking the bluffs, whale watching, or even taking gardening classes.

There is a newly constructed aquatics park, boasting two huge indoor pools. Swimming lanes are separated from the lazy river moat which is heated to 85 degrees. There are numerous classes given in swimming, aerobics, spin, zumba, weight lifting, etc. An all day pass can be purchased or 'Silver Shoe' admission is free.
