About the property

Peaceful family retreat on beautiful Belle-Eau-Clair Beach

‘Askenonia’ means house of friendship in the ancient Huron tongue. And indeed, there is no better place to enjoy the blessings of friends and family than in this aptly-named, luxury log and timber frame cottage on the beautiful sandy shore of southern Georgian Bay. Nearly every room offers a wonderful view of ‘Belle Eau Clair’ Beach and the clear, warm waters of Nottawasaga (southern Georgian) Bay. This picturesque beach has been the subject of postcard photos for many years.

Located just 2 1/2 hours by car from downtown Toronto or 90 minutes from Pearson International Airport, in no time you will be enjoying the peace and quiet of this lovely lakeside setting just a short drive from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The beautiful sandy beach is the nicest private beach in southern Georgian Bay, very quiet and private with only 11 cottages, backed by 70 acres of Nature Conservancy forest with many walking trails. The water is shallow and exceptionally clear, without currents….perfect for young children and anyone who enjoys swimming in clear, reed-free water.

Built 2000-01, this well-appointed, 6500 sq ft family home accommodates up to 15 guests in luxurious comfort. There are four spacious master suites (two kings, one with ensuite bath; one queen with adjacent private bath; one twin-bedded master suite, and two smaller bedrooms which can sleep adults or children in XL twin beds and one set of bunks. All three lake-facing master suites have private porches or balconies - perfect places to relax with a good book and enjoy the tranquility.

The cottage includes three full baths and 2 half baths with high-end fixtures, including an extra-large, twin-headed ‘rain bath’ shower in one of the upstairs master suites. Stone floors in the front entrance and main floor full bath are heated for your comfort.

On the main floor there is a spectacular great room with 68-ton stone fireplace, and thirty-five foot ceilings and massive log pillars and trusses, as well as a separate, sound-proofed family room with 50-inch flat screen television (Shaw satellite cable), Blue-Ray DVD player, a large library of DVDs, an upright grand piano and dozens of board games and puzzles for hours of family fun.

The open concept kitchen features top-of-the line cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and a wine refrigerator, in addition to two conventional ovens, a microwave and a pizza oven. It is separated from the dining area by a long granite counter with four bar stools, which serves as a focus for entertaining and conversation. The kitchen is well equipped, with plenty of good quality pots and pans, crockery, glasses and cutlery.

Entertain your guests in style at the large custom-built maple dining table which seats 12 in front of huge picture windows with a wonderful view of the lake. Alternatively, you can eat outdoors at our spacious round dining table with lazy Susan and seating for 10 people, inside the expansive screen porch which encloses the entire front face of the cottage. There is also an additional teak dining table on the exterior (unscreened) porch which seats six people comfortably under a large ‘market-style’ umbrella. The large Napoleon BBQ grill can handle a feast for a crowd.

Similar to ‘Florida-style’ homes, the entire front face of the cottage opens to the outdoors with ‘nana wall’ disappearing glass doors. This is truly ‘outside inside’ living at its best – with no bugs to bother you in a 900 square foot screened porch running the entire width of the first floor of the cottage. Relax in the Beachcomber hot tub which seats eight, or on the large exterior deck with teak deck furniture and lots of comfortable cushions to while away the hours.

Furnishings throughout were painstakingly planned and assembled, many handcrafted by artisans in the Adirondack region of the northeast US and designed specifically for the cottage.

Enjoy a friendly game of beach volleyball on our regulation-size court by the water’s edge, or build an award-winning sandcastle with our array of beach toys.

Occasional thunder storms are an impressive sight in summer, and you can relax knowing that there is an automatic generator that will kick in immediately in the unlikely event of a power outage. High quality water is supplied by well, and there is also a reverse osmosis filtration system for the best-tasting drinking water.

Laundry facilities are on the premises, and all linens are supplied, including beach towels.

The nearest towns are Penetanguishene and Midland, Ontario, just 15 minutes away, with a number of nice local restaurants and shops should you feel the need to leave your cottage paradise.

Enjoy a round of golf at nearby Midland Golf & Country Club or Brooklea Golf Club, both of which are a test of skill for any golfer. For the kids, mini-golf and go-carts tempt at nearby Balm Beach. Your own watercraft can be launched at nearby marinas in Lafontaine and Penetanguishene. At the cottage we have two kayaks at your disposal, as well as bikes. Paddle in the evening around nearby Tiny Island or out into the bay. Nothing beats the peaceful scene out on the water near dusk, as you listen to the loons.

In winter, ski areas at Mount St. Louis and Moonstone are 30 minutes away, and Blue Mountain and the various Collingwood ski areas are an hour door-to-door. In the height of winter, the forest behind the cottage and the beach itself become a cross-country ski playground. Winter storms are fierce and beautiful, but you will be warm curled up by the wonderful fire or in the hot tub!

Summer, winter, spring or fall, this is a very special retreat where you will sooth your senses and create beautiful memories. We hope to welcome you soon.

About Shan Atkins

I grew up in Toronto and spent many happy summers on this wonderful beach, in various cottages rented by my parents during the sixties and seventies. Once I had a family of my own, I brought them back to this special place to make memories for them like my own. The difference is that I live in Chicago now so it's not so close as it was in my growing-up years! In 1998, one of the eleven cottages on the beach (yes, only 11 in all) came up for sale. It was the first transaction on the beach in almost 50 years and I jumped at the chance to own a piece of this little paradise. The old cottage wasn't winterized and was missing most of the modern conveniences, so after a couple of seasons in it we built a 4-season, larger cottage on our site, incorporating features we'd enjoyed over the years in vacation homes out west (huge stone fireplace, log trusses, soaring ceilings) and Florida (enormous screened in porch providing real outside-in living). Despite the distance, my husband and I spend as much time as we can at the cottage, in both summer and winter. Our three sons love it too, though at ages 24, 22 and 17 they are not as available to spend extended time there as they could when they were younger. So, we made a decision to open the cottage to a very limited number of responsible renters in the summer of 2015, for the first time ever.

Shan Atkins purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Shan Atkins chose Penetanguishene

You won't find a nicer piece of quiet, lovely beachfront anywhere in cottage country! Southern Georgian Bay can't be beat for its shallow, sandy beaches, clear water quality and proximity to Toronto. There's a good reason why the families who initially build cottages on this beach nearly 100 years ago still come here generations later -- and why there have been so few sales on the beach in the decades since. It's one of those special places in the world which seems a little bit frozen in time -- but in a good way. The local area is peaceful and charming, but there is also infrastructure including good grocery stores, nice restaurants in nearby Penetanguishene and Midland, a Galaxy movie theatre with multiple screens, two championship golf courses within 15 minutes, tennis, a regional hospital close by, etc. It's the best of the old, and the new. We wanted to make special family memories here, and we have.

What makes this cottage unique

I spent a lot of time in the original cottage on this site in my growing-up years. The family who owned it had a daughter the same age as me, and we were summer friends. I always thought this lot was the nicest piece of beachfront of any of the 11 cottages on our beach -- wide and sandy, with no rocks in the water and a lovely, gradual drop-off with sandbars. You can literally walk out a few hundred feet into the water and not be over your head. It was the perfect spot to teach our three boys how to swim.

A beautiful retreat in historic Huronia (southern Georgian Bay). Tour nearby attractions at St. Marie-among-the-Hurons, the Martyr's Shrine (visited by Pope John Paul II) and Discovery Harbor in Penetanguishene, which was an important port for the British during the War of 1812.

Absolutely beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Our vacation started when we picked our friend from England up at Pearson International Airport in Toronto. Upon arriving at the cottage, we were all in amazement with its size and beauty!

The photos we have seen of the cottage definitely did not do it justice. Not only was there room for everyone, there was a magnificent common area where we spent a lot of our time at night enjoying a glass of wine and sharing past memories.

The day was spent out on the beach using the paddle boards and kayaks that were provided with the cottage. The view of Georgian Bay is absolutely stunning, and the sand beach was amazing. We did however have a few rainy nights, where we spend outside in the screen porch area.

I do not think there was anything negative about our experience at this Cottage! Our friends from England had such a great time and experience that they're in contemplating purchasing a vacation property in the near future in this area.

Thank you for a wonderful vacation and many memories to come. We definitely hope we can do this again many many more times!

This is no ordinary log cabin!!

  • 5 of 5

Soaring ceilings nestled in the trees. All the comforts of home combined with nature. The house was spacious yet cozy. It was perfect.

We particularly liked the numerous sitting areas, large bedrooms and of course the immediate access to the water. There are several charming nearby towns and we enjoyed a scenic steamship ride.

Will definitely return.

  • 5 of 5

Large luxury cottage on the Bay, with large beach and shallow water, great for familes(we were 8 adults and7 kids 5 and under) well set up for everything you might need, both in the house and for outside play. This place has something for everyone and every weather. The rooms are spectacular and the huge deck is great for hot summer days. Fantastic outdoor fire pit and indoor huge fireplace. Bedding, towels and bathrobes are lovely. Lots of choices for places to eat outdoors and indoors and a great indoor kitchen and big outdoor gas grill. Everything worked well.

Spectacular Lakehouse with a Private Beach on Georgian Bay

  • 5 of 5

More than a mere cottage, this log frame lakehouse has soaring ceilings, an impressive indoor stone floor-to-ceiling fireplace, a well-equipped kitchen and an array of comfortable living rooms and dining spaces that was ideal for our large group. This incredible property is beautifully decorated and well-equipped with a huge selection of DVD's, books, puzzles and games to keep the whole family entertained. As lovely as the lakehouse is on the inside, the outdoor spaces were equally memorable with a hot tub, outdoor fire pit, and one of the most incredible private beaches I've seen in Ontario. The sandy beach allowed for a super shallow entry to the lake which made it fun and safe for the little ones to play with the beach toys and kayaks in the water for hours on end. Shan, the owner was easily reached when needed and helped make sure we were all well taken care of during our stay at the lakehouse. Thanks for the memories!

Beautiful cottage getaway

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage! It was spacious for three families and the cottage had everything we needed and more - fully stocked kitchen, games, movies, kayaks, etc. Shan, the owner, was readily available for any questions.

The highlight of the cottage was the private beach. Our kids spent hours playing there.

I would highly recommend it for gatherings of families and friends.

Luxurious Retreat - Ideal For Large Family Stay

  • 5 of 5

As with many photos, you often wonder if they're true to form. Let me begin with assuring you that this "cottage" is as spectacular as shown (if not better). The description of each room and amenities were accurate which made the room allocations an easy assignment. We thoroughly enjoyed the wide assortment of entertainment available for that rainy day (1 out of 8 wasn't bad) including puzzles, board games and a great movie collection. The property was immaculate and as a linen and bedding person, I can assure you the quality of the bedding and comfort were superb. The owner was fabulous to correspond with - everything was well described and straight forward. She gave us an emergency point of contact if need be and immediately contacted us at the end of the stay to ensure that we enjoyed ourselves. The beach and grounds are beautiful - ideal sandy beach with an easy entry to water. A perfect place for small children to play and splash about. We travelled as an extended family of 12 (parents, siblings, adult children) and were amazed at how the home gave us individual space as well as large principle rooms to enjoy each others company. Meal prep was a breeze in the over-size kitchen with ample counters and options whether to eat indoors or out together as a family. You will not be disappointed in your choice here.

Georgian Bay is the eastern lobe of Lake Huron, and is often referred to as the 'sixth Great Lake' due to its size. (There are only five official Great Lakes but Georgian Bay is larger than two of them). The north channel of Georgian Bay is one of the world's foremost freshwater boating destinations, on every boater's bucket list.
