About Jane Baird

I grew up in newfoundland and spent every summer in Bonavista Bay. I've lived away since university days but have made many trips back and always wanted to own a little piece of the rock. I spend time at the Birdhouse every year and love every minute.

Jane Baird purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Jane Baird chose Sandy Cove

This property is perfect for me. It's in a community, yet it sits on 3+ acres. Although modern and easy to live in it has a cottage appeal. And most importantly the view is spectacular and ever changing. I bought it sight-unseen the day it came on the market. All improvements have been made with an eye to keeping its unique cottage appeal.

Stunning cottage In an idyllic and peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

I would definitely return. The birdhouse has everything for a peaceful holiday away from it all with wonderful beaches and scenery. Wonderful hikes abound and neighbouring villages are full of Newfoundland flavour and interesting people

We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

It was a pleasure staying at the Birdhouse. Of course, you can go exploring on a sunny day. Take the ferry over to St. Brendan's, visit Terra Nova National Park, drive up to Greenspond.

Or you can stay at the house and relax. The view is fanatstic, privacy is guaranteed. Go for a stroll along the nearby beach. Come back, make yourself comfortable on the deck. Watch out for minke whales and icebergs. Barbecue some salmon (in tinfoil!) later on. Then go to sleep with the window open and wake up to birdsong (with the occasional croaking crow mixed in).

We requested to book for two weeks at very short notice, and Jane was ever so forthcoming.

Unforgettable

  • 5 of 5

The Birdhouse was amazing and well equipped. The view was spectacular. We saw whales several times right from the backyard of the house. While there the cottage caretaker, Gordon took us on a little fishing trip on his boat and even provided us some of his catch (cod), such a nice suprise. The whole vacation was unforgettable and amazing. There are many places to hike and beaches to explore. Everything you need is close by as well, which is a plus. We will most definitely be back. Thank you for everything Jane! :)

Cozy, comfortable vacation retreat & amazing views

  • 5 of 5

When we look for vacation rentals, we look for places which offer character without sacrificing comfort. The Bird House nailed this. The house is built to take advantage of its view with huge windows on each of its floors and a lovely wrap around deck with picnic table. The first floor was ideal for cozying up with a book, settling into conversation and sharing a meal (there was also a bathroom cleverly tucked into the closet for the water heater), the second floor had two cozy bedrooms and a bathroom (with a rainfall shower head) met its purposes well, and the third served as a marvelous aerie with amazing views and two comfy rocker/ottoman combos. Second, the house has wonderful character--we loved the colors and the decorations as they perfectly captured the feel of a beach house. We also appreciated all of the books about NL. Finally, the amenities were modern and in good condition--fridge, stove, washer and dryer. Though it was not a problem for us, there is not much privacy in the house as the walls and floors are not insulated. The stairs might prove tough for folks with limited mobility, too.

In terms of location, we could not have asked for better. We did a ton of driving while we were in NL (4200 miles!), so we did not mind hour to hour and a half day trips to get to the neighboring peninsulas. Though we admit we quickly became biased toward the Birdhouse, we didn't see a neater spot or cozier house or community in our travels than the one we were renting. The better known town of Trinity seemed to have more to offer in terms of restaurants and nightlife, but we prefer to cook in and stayed in at night reading or playing games. Wish we had known to stock up on groceries before heading out to the house, though, as there were very limited options for produce once we arrived.

Jane, the owner was wonderful, offering travel suggestions in the months prior to our arrival and then proving wonderfully responsive when a couple of questions came up during our stay. Just as impressive was Gord, the caretaker, who had to come by to fix a ripped screen. In a classic example of NL friendliness, Gord got to chatting with us and soon offered to take us fishing. Thanks to Gord's skill as a fisherman, we reeled in a couple cod which served as the basis for perhaps the finest fish I have ever eaten. In the end, our only regret was that we didn't rent for longer and that it will likely be a while before we return to "the Rock"!

A lovely place in every way

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Birdhouse so much! The scenery and area was beautiful and the house itself was so artsy and fun-- it was creatively decorated and had everything we needed including beautiful views from all the windows. It was a restful and peaceful spot, and we especially enjoyed rock hunting on the beach and morning coffee while whale watching from the bench on Greenings Point. Jane (the owner) and Gordon (our local contact) were welcoming and helpful hosts in every way. We were sorry to have to leave.
