About the property

Queen plus twin on a private bay with oceanside hot tub

The Cabin on Spring Bay on Orcas Island is a secluded waterfront retreat in Washington's spectacular archipelago, the San Juan Islands. Hiking trails link Spring Bay's 57 wooded acres to adjacent Obstruction Pass State Park, creating a 5-mile system of trails right outside your cabin door. From this secluded retreat, guests can explore shoreline, wetland, and forest by foot, kayak, or rowboat. It is a grassy barefoot walk from the bed to the private beach. A highlight for guests is the waterfront hot tub with unobstructed view of where tree meets Salish Sea. Come to relax and recharge in quiet comfort in the cabin, or lounge outside on the 40-foot deck.

Guests have a private hot tub, hiking trails, and campfire area on the beach with a picnic table. We also provide an outdoor grill.

We provide maps, field guides, and binoculars to borrow. Guests may also arrange for an optional guided kayak tour. Beginners are welcome, and no experience is necessary.

Spring Bay Cabin is an ideal location for an elopement. Your hosts are a wedding officiant and a guitarist. Couples can have a quiet beach ceremony, or even tie the knot on the water in side-by-side kayaks.

About Sandy Playa and Carl Burger

Nice to meet you! We are Sandy and Carl, and we've enjoyed stewardship of Spring Bay's 57 acres of natural life for since 1992. We live on the property with our Labrador, Stretch. We enjoy making music and bread, wine tasting, hiking, and sharing our considerable knowledge of wildlife. We came to Orcas after our first careers as Park Rangers. Sandy officiates weddings, and Carl often accompanies the ceremony on guitar. We are also kayak guides and launch tours directly from Spring Bay. We like meeting new people, we especially have fun catching up through the years with our many returning guests.

Sandy Playa and Carl Burger purchased this cabin in 1992

Why Sandy Playa and Carl Burger chose Olga

Our intent with this land is to keep it as a natural resource. We purchased it to keep these acres in preservation and to be good stewards of the land. We brought with us to Spring Bay our passion and knowledge as retired Park Rangers.

What makes this cabin unique

The Cabin on Spring Bay is the perfect place to elope. (Shhhhhh.) We are happy to be able to provide legal, personal, sweet n' simple, and meaningful ceremonies for ALL couples. Your ceremony, guitar accompaniment, a guided kayak excursion, or even an on-the-water ceremony can be easily added to the cabin rental.

We offer on-site kayak tours, so there is no transportation necessary around the island in order to launch. Beginners and youngsters are welcome. In cooperative weather, spot an amazing variety of sea and bird life as you ply the waters of the San Juans. We use double kayaks and provide necessary gear for comfort and safety. Double kayaks can be rented from Spring Bay during your stay at the cabin. Active tides and currents require that newcomers to the San Juans and novice kayakers join us for a guided tour your first time out.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The trails that Carl and Sandy have created here are ideal for daily walks and give a wonderful flavor of the bird and plant life. This place is truly a reflection of the heart and soul that has been invested in preservation and living in continuity and harmony with one's surroundings. It has been a blessing to have shared it.

Deceptive Description

  • 3 of 5

Not Secluded. When you have what appears to be a very huge 3 story looking house looming over your shoulder where the owners live, that is not secluded. We were looking for something secluded without any neighbors. As stated, don't expect to cook any romantic or gourmet dinners. The propane stove on the porch and the toaster oven inside was adequate. All in all a nice stay, owners did stay away and gave you privacy

Owner's Response: To make our description of our property more accurate, I have added a photo with a view of both our residence and the cabin. I also changed the words "secluded in nature" to "surrounded by nature" to avoid any future misconceptions of a wilderness location. Our goal is to accurately describe the cabin and it's surroundings. We are happy to answer any specific questions/concerns prior to booking! Our 2 story 3800 sq.foot home sits about 150 feet to the Northwest (uphill from the beach) of the cabin, behind a grove of trees. The part of our "yard" that is adjacent to the cabin is fenced, and also behind trees. Our home is very visible when you drive in/walk by on your way to and from the cabin. It is also visible from the back doorway and one of the windows in the pocket bedroom once you are inside the cabin. You can see it as you walk along the beach, or kayak in from the bay - as shown in the photo. The cabin sits on a cove, named Spring Bay. It is bounded on the West side by Obstruction Pass State Park. On a very low tide, people can walk around the point from the park to Spring Bay, and Cabin guests can also walk around the point to the beach at the park or hike to the park on our private trails. The East side of the Spring Bay has a high bank. There are 2 residences on that ridge. Neither are visible from the cabin - one is visible from the West end of the beach. Access to the cabin is via a 3/4 mile dirt road that leads to our gated 1/2mile driveway. Our grounds consist of 57 wooded acres, bordered on the west side by 80 acres of parkland and on the South side by the Salish Sea.

lovely private spot

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed there for 3 nights and we enjoyed every minute. We were able to crab in the bay using their row boat, relax and enjoy the nature and wildlife, enjoy the spacious interior, and relax in the hot tub. A perfect place. Sandy was readily available to help but allowed us our privacy. We are already planning a return visit.

A beautiful cabin with an outstanding view

  • 5 of 5

We had an outstanding stay. Sandy and Carl were great to meet, and we also enjoyed meeting their dogs. The cabin is even better than the photos. Outstanding view of a private bay just a few feet away. Deer were grazing in the front yard. The cabin has great wood beams inside and outside, and was well equipped.

We had four nights and wish it had been a week. We also had a day trip to Sucia planned, which was wonderful, but we tried to cancel because we would have preferred to just stay at the cabin.

Extra touch - the great hot tub with view of the bay!

Beautiful, peaceful, endlessly interesting things to see and do.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I are both over eighty. The cabin is perfect! Carl and Sandy anchored the row boat on the buoy so that our children and grandchildren could pick us up in their boat to explore other islands . . . so convenient and easy. And Sandy provided a wonderful morning kayak tour around Obstruction Island. Our purpose in being in the islands was to share time with our family, but now we are thinking a quiet 3 days or so all on our own at the sheltered and beautiful Spring Bay would be wonderful . . . . we are planning it for the future. Great weekend retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our host Sandy welcomed us on our way to cabin. She was very friendly and helped us to get accommodated. In our cabin everything was setup and ready for us, including delicious cookies Sandy baked herself!

The cabin itself, as advertised, is secluded and only couple yards away from the water. It was lovely to wake up every morning to the gorgeous view. The kitchen was minimal but still well equipped, and was more than sufficient for 2 people.

There were couple hiking routes just nearby the cabin, so we didn't need to drive whole weekend and could enjoy being there.

Beautiful setting, lovely cabin

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed twice at this cabin now because it's so great. It's impossible to beat the quiet, private bay, the hot tub with a view, the cozy fireplace, puzzles, cribbage board, and cards. It's not a big cabin, but it has everything you need. There isn't a big oven, but there is a small countertop oven from baking biscuits, cookies, etc. I can't recommend it enough.
