Salt Cay is a beach lover’s paradise with long stretches of white sandy beaches that are practically deserted. The turquoise blue waters are some of the most stunning in all of the Caribbean. You can spend hours combing the beaches for shells and sea glass, pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the tranquility of a beautiful stretch of beach all to yourself, and soak up the sun while keeping cool with the ever present trade winds.
If you love snorkeling and scuba diving, Salt Cay is the perfect place to experience beautiful coral reefs right off the shore. There are several amazing snorkeling spots around the island with North Beach being at the top of the list. The snorkeling right off our house beach is also fabulous and easy for even the most novice snorkelers.
Salt Cay boasts 14 dive sites and the visibility is often 100ft or more. The water temperature remains a comfortable 77-83 F year round. The diving is easy with almost no current and surface intervals are back on land where you can relax on the beach in the shade between dives or grab a cold drink. There is a wonderful dive shop on the island, Salt Cay Divers, which has friendly and laid back divemasters who will become fast friends.
From January through March Atlantic Humpback Whales migrate right past Salt Cay on their way to the Silver Bank to calve and mate. 3000-5000 whales make the long journey from the cold northern seas and pass by so close to the property that you can kayak out to them as they pass by. Some of the whales calve in the warm, crystal clear waters right around Salt Cay and can be seen resting with their new babies in shallow waters all around the island. Half day whale watching trips are offered twice daily from the dive shop (weather permitting) from January through the end of March. If the whales are relaxed and cooperative, guests have the opportunity to enter the water to snorkel with these magnificent creatures. Salt Cay is one of only 3 places in the world where this is possible.
If you would like to explore the small uninhabited islands around Salt Cay, day trips to nearby Big Sand Cay and Cotton Cay can be arranged with the dive shop. These islands offer snorkeling, pinicking and stunning beaches for swimming and beachcombing.
Salt Cay is also home to adorable donkeys that roam free on the island and greet visitors at the front gate of the house each morning for snacks. The donkeys were left behind when the salt mines were abandoned many years ago and add so much charm to the island.
Three days a week a ferry leaves from Deane's Dock on Salt Cay and travels to Grand Turk for the day. Activities on Grand Turk include shopping, sightseeing, scuba diving, and snorkeling with the stingrays at Gibb's Cay. Grand Turk also has a number of great beach bars and fun oceanfront restaurants.
