About Bob or Marcia Beckwith

Bob and Marcia were Idaho Educators. Guiding white water raft trips brought Bob and Marcia to the Salmon River, Sawtooths and Stanley Basin. Bob is a licensed white water guide. He has guided commercial trips on Upper Main, Main Salmon, Middle Fork of the Salmon, and Lower Salmon River. Marcia helped with river trip logistics and food management.

We had a love of Idaho outdoors when we came to the basin. Working, playing, having and raising kids and now grand kids along the Salmon River and the Sawtooth Mountains is the fabric of our lives.

During his career Bob taught, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Photography, and Yearbook for 33 years. Marcia was an English and Social Studies Teacher who then became a librarian-tech consultant. She completed her 34 year Career with Boise School District managing over 50 libraries.

Bob or Marcia Beckwith purchased this lodge in 1978

Why Bob or Marcia Beckwith chose Stanley

The land was purchased in 1978, the Logs were cut in 1979, and the Lodge built in 1983. We picked the piece of land because it provides easy access, with a wonderful Sawtooths View. The Salmon River is only 100 yards away. The Lodge is used year around so there is no challenge accessing the lodge because of weather or winter conditions. The Lodge has provided the perfect place to launch one day to days long adventures. Almost every outdoor adventure can begin at the Lodge. The Beckwiths have enjoyed starting many float trips, back packs, hikes, hunting and fishing trips from the Lodge. Families have been coming since the doors were in place for their celebrations. The Lodge was designed to provide adequate space for a family group, friends and guests. With the decks, bar-b-cue, hot tub, backyard, and fire pit area outdoor celebrations have occurred with more than 50 people.

As educators we knew we wouldn't be able to use the cabin year around. We built it with the vision of having a Lodge for our family, friends and guests' celebrations and adventures.

What makes this lodge unique

The Sawtooths come with lots of space. There are miles and miles of open space. They provide a place for a lifetime of adventures. You can walk from the Lodge onto your public land. You don’t even have to ask access. You are free to go, hike, hunt, fish, (with proper licenses), explore, sled, ski, and celebrate.

The Salmon River is out the front door. It is the longest river in the United States to start and end within a given state. You could launch a boat 100 yards from the front door and go all the way to the Pacific! And some folks have done that.

We tried to design the lodge to capture some of that spaciousness. When you are sitting at the table you can look up 26 feet to ceiling above. You can cast your eyes out multiple windows, each offering their own view. You can look up to the balcony and second floor above.

Each time of year offers something different. Winter can be mild to well below zero. When the temperatures dip into the minus numbers, the air is crystal clear. You will hardly see the Sawtooths more beautiful. The wild flowers and green of spring and early summer couldn’t be richer.

The wild critters are always around. Sometime you will hear them and sometimes you will see them. Over our time here we have heard the call of many kinds of birds. The geese love the open meadows. Bald Eagles fly the river corridor. Osprey can be seen taking fish from the Salmon River. Elk bugle in the fall. This is a treat when soaking in the hot tub. Wolves and coyotes have howled out the daily news. From the Lodge we have seen deer, elk, antelope, coyotes, an occasional bear, and wolves (very, very rare). At one point in time Todd the Fox (grandchildren’s choice of name) came for visits. This was a major delight for those at the Lodge. Sometimes you will see them and sometimes you won't. We always encourage guests to keep their eyes open; one never knows when something will show up to show off. Binoculars are a handy tool.

Perfect Family Vacation Lodge

  • 5 of 5

Beckwith Lodge was perfect for our family of 9 ranging from 9 years to 62 years.

We spent a full week at the cabin and could not have asked for anything better.

Two and a half baths were adequate for everyone's needs.

We were 4 couples and one child. Everyone had their own room.

The hot tub is a welcome treat after a chilly day on the Salmon rapids or to soothe weary bodies after a day hiking or paddling.

The lodge provides all the cooking utensils you could possibly want, plenty of sheets, blankets, towels, etc. Really the only thing you need to bring is food and your love of the outdoors.

The large dining table was the gathering spot for us. Having the large table to seat everyone made for good times and conversation.

The fire pit for evening s'mores and stargazing was a fantastic treat.

It was never cool enough for us to use the wood burning stove.

Refish Lake conveniently located a short drive away. The stores in Stanley have adequate food supplies, etc. Though buying groceries in Boise or Ketchum is a good idea depending on how you are getting to Stanley.

Stanley and the surrounding area are an outdoor paradise.

If you are coming to Stanley and looking for lodging for a group you won't do any better than Beckwith.

Memorial Day 2017

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time and plenty of space. There were 4 problems:

1. The hot tub was not very hot. There should be a sign right on the temp control if you don't want people to touch it.

2. There was a weird/musty smell in the main floor master. I think there is moisture in the floor of that bathroom. A new shower curtain is needed.

3. The hot tub "towels" provided are not towels, but are fleece blankets that do not perform anything like towels. I wished I had brought our own, but I think for the price that actual hot tub towels should be provided (as advertised).

4. The kitchen is very well stocked but the can opener doesn't work.

Beautiful as the nearby mountains

  • 5 of 5

We visited this cabin as a birthday celebration with several friends and it was stunning! There are 4 main bedrooms and a couple of bed/couches in the lodge. 2.5 bath. The hot tub was super relaxing. Beautiful kitchen with a really nice fridge! Lots of pots/pans/bowls/silverwear/plates/glasses. Great location, directions were easy to find - can see it right off the highway but could hardly hear anything. As we were sitting eating breakfast from the gigantic table, we were able to oooh and ahhh over wildlife. When we stepped outside we could see the mountains. To be aware, cabin does not have wifi, but you really won't need it if you are outside exploring! I loved our time here at the lodge! Thank you Bob and Marcia!!

Awesome place for large Thanksgiving gathering

  • 5 of 5

2016 was the 3rd or 4th time my large family has gathered at Beckwith Lodge for Thanksgiving and we've always had a wonderful time! We arrived to clean, well stocked accommodations. The kitchen had ample room to prepare the holiday meal for 18 adults and 6 children. The large dining table plus a small folding table accommodated our group comfortably. While there are too many in our party to all stay at the lodge, it does provide a warm, comfortable place for us to gather and eat, play games and enjoy conversation by the warmth of the wood stove. The nearby fire pit provided a great time for the kids who roasted hot dogs and marshmallows. Relaxing the in hot tub was also enjoyable. For our active family members, hiking and running trails were right out the door. Bob and Marcia have created a fantastic place in a beautiful setting for large family gatherings. Once again, thanks for another very special, memorable Thanksgiving!

Awesome group cabin for all types

  • 5 of 5

This place is great! If you need a spot for a big group of guys or a family, it's perfect. I had 12 of my friends come from all across the country for a fishing/bachelor weekend. The fire pit was great, the hot tub was clean and cozy, horse shoe pit was a game changer for tournament style event and heavy beer drinking. The epic wooden table in the house was perfect for an all out bacon crushing breakfast and a poker fest that took all my money. The layout was great and everyone was able to have their own personal space. It really felt like it was the perfect place to have a bonding trip for a bunch of guys that didnt know each other. Unforgettable weekend.

Note: I was initially worried about it's proximity to the highway, but I was quickly reminded i was in Idaho. I think we counted 2 cars after 10:00 pm, maybe 10 the whole trip..... We also saw deer/elk, coyotes, everything across the way. Beautiful stay and stellar view of the mountains. Also check in was effortless and so was the cleanup.

Thanks Bob and Marcia for the stay!

Perfect For Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

We had our family reunion in Stanley, Idaho and rented the Beckwith Lodge and the Lower Stanley Lodge (right next door) to accommodate our large family. We had our main meal at Beckwith Lodge due to the large dining room table and the large deck. We never felt crowded and it was perfect for visiting and getting reacquainted. The lodge was clean and the beds were comfortable. There isn't a bathroom upstairs, but this worked out fine for the younger family members. Sometimes a large house does not have adequate serving dishes and cookware, but this was not the case here. Plenty of skillets, bowls, glasses and coffee cups!

Beautiful view of the river and the mountains. We enjoyed our morning coffee or evening drinks while sitting on the deck. The highway in front can be quite busy at times, but at other times, it is peaceful. We watched 2 eagles hunting in the field across the river.

There is so much to do in the area. Family members went on hikes, dirt biking trips, a rafting trip, and shopping. We also enjoyed the hot tub, campfire, horseshoes and swing. The trail to the next door home came in handy too. The Mountain Mama's Craft show was one during our weekend, so we enjoyed the displays and good food.

Bob and Marcia are wonderful to work with. We had to be very flexible with the other home owners next door to reserve a time that would work for both homes. I highly recommend Beckwith's Lodge for any large family gathering.
