About the property

Bed-and-Breakfast-style and quaintness in the heart of New York City

The Rear Library is a half floor unit located 2 flights up from our house's entry foyer level and can accommodate a maximum of 2 people.

*Bedroom with 1 standard queen-size bed. 345 ft² (32 m²).

*Optional: 1 standard twin daybed: one-time $25 fee for set-up and use of daybed.

*Large renovated en suite bathroom with tiled shower, pedestal sink & toilet.

*Compact galley kitchen with refrigerator, sink, stove/oven, microwave, toaster oven, drip coffeemaker & French press (no dishwasher). The kitchenette is small, but quite serviceable. We’ve equipped it with everything our guests need to make basic meals and snacks.

*3 operable double pane windows with bamboo shades and lace panels

*High ceilings and hardwood floors

*Ornamental fireplace

*Panasonic 26" 720p LCD HDTV with iPod Dock

*MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT = 10 YEARS: 1871 House is a converted 146 year old Brownstone. In that it is an historic building constructed in the year 1871 there is no elevator and all suites are accessed by our central open staircase. Regretfully, this feature (the house's unenclosed staircase) makes it unsafe for young children under 10 years of age to stay in the house.

*The Rear Library may be booked together with the Front Library for connecting suites

*Maximum 4 person occupancy when booking both the Rear and Front Library Bedrooms. When the two rooms are booked together, the suite offers 1 kitchen that is shared between the two rooms plus TWO bathrooms. The two rooms are connecting via an interior hallway.

*Prior to making your decision, consider there is NO elevator at the 1871 House. All rooms are accessed via our central staircase.

*Please visit our website for more details: http://www.1871house.com/

*More Photos can be viewed on our website: http://www.1871house.com/suites/half-floor-suites/rear-library.htm

*4-5 night minimum for most advance reservations. Please send us an email message if you'd like to stay with us for fewer nights!

*EXTENDED STAY REQUESTS (MINIMUM ONE MONTH) - please email us with your estimated budget. We can customize monthly rates. Maximum number of guests for monthly stays is limited to maximum 3 occupants.

Two flights above the lobby and away from the street sits the Rear Library, which exudes a kind of palatial serenity, owing to its spacious size, princess-worthy netting and cream bedding around the queen sleigh bed, and an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling books. The south-facing suite gets lots of light through its three lace-clad windows, which overlook a garden and terrace, and the daybed certainly makes one of the more enticing nap spots you will come across. The floors, of oak parquet, the imposing marble fireplace, and the 10' ceiling all also contribute to the expansive quality of the room. A large oriental rug, the inviting wrought iron and brass daybed, a bureau, and antique armoire, and a round dining table with three chairs complete the suite's furnishings. Please note Fireplace may not be used/ornamental only.

The Rear Library Suite has an unusual feature in that when booked simultaneously with our Front Library Suite - it provides the flexibility of being used as a 2 bedroom 2-bath suite with private central kitchen and interior connecting hallway or as two completely separate private entrance studios each with a private ensuite bathroom. Families or friends can book the two rooms together since there is an interior hallway that links the two bedrooms. Of the three full-floor suites at 1871 House, the Library Suite has the best set-up for two couples that are traveling together.

The House & Location

1871 House is a charming Brownstone offset on a side residential townhouse block within Manhattan’s fashionable Upper East Side and convenient to shopping and museums. The pretty shuttered townhouse is in a nicely quiet location two blocks from Central Park. The quiet street makes you forget you’re in the heart of the city.

The turn-of-the-century brownstone townhouse is located within the Lenox Hill neighborhood of the Upper East Side and brings bed-and-breakfast-style and quaintness to the busy city. Enjoy views of beautiful East 62nd Street or serene garden views from your own private terrace. Uniquely, 1871 House offers both the intimacy of a Bed and Breakfast & the privacy of a traditional hotel, perfect for your extended stay on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. A stay at 1871 feels much like time spent in a personal Manhattan apartment.

The classic 19th-century townhome consists of seven generously sized apartment-style suites, with both smaller units suitable for 1-3 and full-floor units suitable for families or groups of up to 5. The Suites include beautiful queen beds, kitchens, private bathrooms, hardwood floors and modern amenities such as wi-fi and flat-screen tv’s. Rooms offer high ceilings, ornamental fireplaces, and four-poster beds covered by quilts, marble-topped dressers and lace-curtained windows. Fireplace mantles, moldings around windows and high ceilings have been preserved. All give the place an elegant B&B feel, as do the antiques scattered throughout. Rooms are modernly enough appointed that you won't feel stuck in the 19th century. Each room is quite large, cozy and country furnished.

Elegantly situated on Manhattan’s fashionable Upper East Side, the House's location enjoys the best of both worlds – serene privacy and un-matched convenience. The house's location is a quiet residential enclave for some of New York’s most prestigious addresses. The neighborhood abounds with tasteful, exclusive boutiques and charming, international restaurants. Yet, the house is only three blocks from bustling Midtown and some of the City's fabulous and world renown Museums & galleries including the Frick, The Metropolitan and MoMa. Shopping is plentiful including the 4 Bs: Bloomingdales, Barney's, Bendel's and Bergdorf-Goodman.

The house is walking distance to Fifth Avenue and Midtown East with its ubiquitous Corporate Offices as well as midtown Manhattan's exclusive Decoration & Design building (D&D building) and Manhattan Art and Antiques Center. Architects, Designers and Collectors from around the world travel to this area for its concentration of design and home furnishings showrooms and galleries.

Medical professionals, patients, families, and caregivers appreciate our ideal location minutes away from some of the country's best hospitals and medical facilities including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Weill Cornell Medical College, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, New York-Presbyterian hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, the Hospital for Special Surgery and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Transportation is excellent with southbound buses on Lexington Avenue (62nd Street) and northbound buses on Madison and Third Avenue (63rd Street). No buses are allowed on Park Avenue. The area has two cross-town bus lines and subway stations are two blocks south at 60th Street on Lexington Avenue (Q,N,R,4,5,6) or one block north at 63rd Street (F train) on Lexington Avenue. Grand Central Station is one subway stop away (take the 4 or 5 one stop from 59th street to Grand Central Station).
