Our small Upper East Side Brownstone offers seven one-of-a-kind spacious suite apartments, studio apartments and guest rooms. All 1871 House rooms are accessed by our beautiful main staircase and are NOT serviced by an elevator.

Two flights above the lobby and away from the street sits the Rear Library, which exudes a kind of palatial serenity, owing to its spacious size, princess-worthy netting and cream bedding around the queen sleigh bed, and an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling books. The south-facing suite gets lots of light through its three lace-clad windows, which overlook a garden and terrace, and the daybed certainly makes one of the more enticing nap spots you will come across. The floors, of oak parquet, the imposing marble fireplace, and the 10' ceiling all also contribute to the expansive quality of the room. A large oriental rug, the inviting wrought iron and brass daybed, a bureau, and antique armoire, and a round dining table with three chairs complete the suite's furnishings.

The Rear Library also includes a compact kitchen, with microwave oven, toaster oven and a regular oven/stove top, a coffeemaker, sink, and full-size refrigerator.

The Rear Library's en-suite bathroom is the most recently renovated in the entire townhouse and consists of a just-rebuilt tiled shower, pedestal sink, and toilet.

Please note Fireplace may not be used/ornamental only.

The Library Suite (Front and Rear Library):

The Rear Library Suite has an unusual feature in that when booked simultaneously with our Front Library Suite - it provides the flexibility of being used as a 2 bedroom 2-bath suite with private central kitchen and interior connecting hallway or as two completely separate private entrance studios each with a private ensuite bathroom. Families or friends can book the two rooms together since there is an interior hallway that links the two bedrooms. Of the three full-floor suites at 1871 House, the Library Suite has the best set-up for two couples that are traveling together.

Central Park is only three short blocks from us, and the neighborhood has much, much else, to offer, from some of the finest boutiques and best restaurants in New York, to the fabulous Museum Mile, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Met Breuer Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Frick Collection, and the dream-row of all true shoppers, that stretch including Bloomingdale's, Barneys, Bendels and Bergdorf-Goodman.

Also within walking distance are Fifth Avenue and Midtown East with its ubiquitous Corporate Offices as well as midtown Manhattan's exclusive Decoration & Design building (D&D building) and Manhattan Art and Antiques Center. Architects, Designers and Collectors from around the world travel to this area for its concentration of design and home furnishings showrooms and galleries.

There is a broad rate range for the Rear Library Suite. Our lowest rates are offered for extended stays, for specific existing gap dates in between longer occupancy periods as well as for shorter stays that fall back to back with reservations already in place on non-weekend nights. Rates for advance dates, high-season periods and holidays are at the high end of the rate range. There is rate variation within months.

The minimum night stay requirement varies throughout the year however we generally have a 4-5 night minimum. Shorter stays of one, two or three-nights may be offered for last minute inquiries and for gap periods as well as non-weekend dates that fall back to back with reservations in place. We do not accept bookings with a gap between move in date and availability date. Exceptions to the minimum night stay requirement would be for reservations which fall adjacent to a reservation in place or for a last minute reservation request.

Transportation is excellent with southbound buses on Lexington Avenue (62nd Street) and northbound buses on Madison and Third Avenue (63rd Street). No buses are allowed on Park Avenue. The area has two cross-town bus lines and subway stations are two blocks south at 60th Street on Lexington Avenue (Q,N,R,4,5,6) or one block north at 63rd Street (F train) on Lexington Avenue. Grand Central Station is one subway stop away (take the 4 or 5 one stop from 59th street to Grand Central Station.
