About the property

🌞Tree-Lined East 62nd Street 🌞 Two Blocks to Best Madison Avenue Shopping 🌞

***Please Note This Property Has a 30-Night Minimum Stay Requirement*** Located on East 62nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue, the Library Suite sits on the second floor of a 5-story 19th century Upper East Side Townhouse. The apartment is accessed via our central staircase. There is no elevator.

The Library Suite consists of two bedrooms, the Rear Bedroom and the Front Bedroom, two bathrooms and a small kitchen. The Rear Bedroom looks over the back of the house, while the Front Bedroom looks out East 62nd Street and the beautiful townhouses. Both bedroom have direct access via the public hallway/staircase.

The Rear Bedroom: Two flights above the lobby and away from the street sits the Rear Library, which exudes a kind of palatial serenity, owing to its spacious size, princess-worthy netting and cream bedding around the queen sleigh bed, and an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling books. The south-facing suite gets lots of light through its three lace-clad windows, which overlook a garden and terrace, and the daybed certainly makes one of the more enticing nap spots you will come across. The floors, of a beautiful oak parquet, the imposing marble fireplace, and the 10' ceiling all also contribute to the expansive quality of the room. A large oriental rug, the inviting wrought iron and brass daybed, a bureau, and antique armoire, and a round dining table with three chairs complete the suite's furnishings. Please note Fireplace may not be used/ornamental only. 345 ft² (32 m²).

The bedroom is furnished with 1 Queen Bed (sleeps maximum 2) and 1 Twin Bed (sleeps maximum 1).

The en-suite bathroom is the most recently renovated in the entire townhouse and consists of a recently re-built tiled shower, pedestal sink, and toilet.

The Front Bedroom: The street view side of 1871House's 2nd floor makes up the Front Library, a simple but spacious suite whose North-facing oversized windows give a terrific midlevel portrait of the townhouse's neighbors. An original marble fireplace mantle, parquet floors, and a nearly 10' ceiling form the backdrop for this wonderfully decorated, approximately 345 square foot suite.

A comfortable Ralph Lauren leather settee sits at the foot of a carved-wood queen bed with rolling-pin headboard, both of which give way to a small marble bistro table and bamboo bistro chairs. Two more marble-topped pieces - a Victorian washstand and Victorian dresser - complete the suite's primary furnishings. The prints of 18th and 19th century ante-rooms and throne-rooms along the North wall remind one of the kind of luxury that the Front Library itself hearkens back to and perhaps makes it apparent why Country Living Magazine chose to photograph the Front Library for their "Inn of the Month" feature. Please note that the Fireplace is ornamental only.

There's a standard queen-size bed and optional single trundle bed (10"H x 39"W x 74"L) w/custom-made mattress similar to a futon mattress with 100% cotton ticking and filling. En suite bathroom with tub/shower combination, pedestal sink & toilet. Please note: The Front Library bathroom is of a vintage character.

The Front Library includes a small refrigerator, electric water kettle, TV.

The kitchen is stocked with a stove/oven and refrigerator, microwave oven, toaster oven, french press, drip coffee maker, and electric water kettle. Pots, pans, cups, utensils & plates. The compact galley kitchen is small, but quite serviceable. We’ve equipped it with everything our guests need to make basic meals and snacks.

Amenities include complimentary WiFi, TV, Internet & air conditioning. Extras included such as hair dryer, iron and ironing board. Clean linens, towels and pillows provided. Extras included such as hair dryer, iron and ironing board. 100% cotton linens, towels, quilts, down blankets and down pillows provided.

Housekeeping: Additional $85 per week* (housekeeping 1x per week). Includes change of linens and towels. Utilities: Additional $275/month* includes wifi, electric, heat, hot water, cable (basic). Summer Supplemental Utility Fee for a/c: $125 per month*. The a/c can be installed in the months of June, July, August and September. The a/c is optional however since this suite is just below the roof, it will be very hot w/o a/c.

*If you are staying more than 1 month, the utility fees and the housekeeping fee will be prorated accordingly.

We have a minimum 30-day stay. In many cases our monthly rate is cheaper than a 2-3 week stay in a luxury hotel. We encourage you to compare!

PAYMENT FOR MONTHLY STAYS IS VIA E-CHECK or WIRE TRANSFER ONLY. WE DON'T ACCEPT CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS FOR EXTENDED STAYS.

The Brownstone is situated in the much sought after LENOX HILL neighborhood of the Historic Upper East side section of Manhattan and a short walk to CENTRAL PARK and some of New York's finest shopping districts. The House's location, a quiet residential enclave for some of New York's most prestigious addresses, enjoys the best of both worlds – serene privacy and un-matched convenience. The neighborhood abounds with tasteful, exclusive boutiques and charming, international restaurants. Yet, the house is only three blocks from bustling Midtown and some of the City's fabulous and world renown Museums & galleries including the Frick, The Metropolitan and MoMa. Shopping is plentiful including Bloomingdales, Barney's, Bendel's and Bergdorf-Goodman.

The beautiful brownstone building is conveniently located within walking distance to the Met, Carnegie Hall, the Frick Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, Central Park Zoo & Rockefeller Center. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is a quick 12-minute Uber ride just across the Park or to TIMES SQUARE by Taxi or subway. We are in a perfect location for NYC Marathon Runners - as we are very close to the finish line! The East River Esplanade is approximately a 25 minute walk.

Urban conveniences make living here a breeze, and there are basic living facilities and shops within walking distance, including Whole Foods Market, Duane Reade Pharmacy, a shoe repair, dry cleaners, nail salons, hair salons, Starbucks and much more.

Public transportation around NYC is made easy from this location. Consider using the subway station at 60th Street / Lexington Avenue, which serves the 4, 5, 6, N, Q, R trains and F train on 63rd Street (all servicing up and downtown) (express and local). Bus located around the corner. The subway will take you to the Southern tip of the city (Freedom Towers - 9/11 Memorial) within 20 minutes.

The house is a five minute walk to Central Park and Fifth Avenue, 12 minutes to Times Square by Taxi and 11-14 minutes by subway; Grand Central Station is one subway stop away (take the 4 or 5 one stop from 59th street to Grand Central Station); walking distance to Fifth Avenue and Midtown East with its ubiquitous Corporate Offices as well as midtown Manhattan's exclusive Decoration & Design building (D&D building) and Manhattan Art and Antiques Center. Architects, Designers and Collectors from around the world travel to this area for its concentration of design and home furnishings showrooms and galleries.

The country's best hospitals and medical facilities including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Weill Cornell Medical College, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, New York-Presbyterian hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, the Hospital for Special Surgery and Mount Sinai Hospital are ideally located minutes away from the house.

MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT = 10 YEARS: 1871 House is a converted 146 year old Brownstone. In that it is an historic building constructed in the year 1871 there is no elevator and all suites are accessed by our central open staircase. Regretfully, this feature (the house's unenclosed staircase) makes it unsafe for young children under 10 years of age to stay in the house.

Why Lia and JQ chose Lenox Hill

The best thing about Manhattan is being within walking distance of so many incredible sites! We chose the Upper East Side because it is leafy, romantic, and genteel, with peaceful streets and historic architecture. It couldn't be a better place to hang your hat!

The location is also perfect for its proximity to Central Park, fantastic shopping and NY Culture. The House is within walking distance of Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, Carnegie Hall, boutiques, museums & galleries, New York’s finest department stores, top restaurants and business districts. In addition, for everyday convenience, we have barbershops, supermarkets, gourmet stores, pharmacies, dry cleaning & shoe repair shops just around the corner.

Access to seven subway lines are one or to blocks away. Museums within walking distance include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA, Frick Collection, and the Asia Society.

Shopping Excellence: Lauren, Versace, Barneys, Chanel, Hermes, Prada, Burberrys, Bergdorf Goodman's and the like are all nearby.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My daughter and I, spent 3 weeks, first, in The Rear Library Suite and then in the Studio. We are really grateful for our lovely stay at this beautiful B&B. The staff was so helpful and nice with us. The location is perfect!! We don’t hesitate to recommend 1871 House to our family and friends.

Room Tip: Rear Rooms are quieter.

Charming

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous Victorian on the Upper East Side, beautifully furnished and decorated and nicely equipped with small kitchens. Really feels like you've gone back in time. Very friendly, helpful staff. Perfect if you don't need or want hotel amenities. Much more peaceful and homey, and a significant savings. The stairs are steep, and no elevator, which could be a barrier for some. Hot water, A/C, and other details reflect the age of the building and the owners' avoidance of wholesale renovation of this architectural gem—well worth it I think, but if you expect or need everything perfect a modern hotel might suit you better. However if charm, location, privacy, and coziness matter appeal to you, this place is a winner. A very special way to visit Manhattan.

Owner's Response: We want to thank the reviewer for his very kind comments. We agree! We just want to address two points which were mentioned. We weren’t aware of any events that might have taken place during our guest’s stay in regard to a/c or hot water - our hot water system is modern and has built in back ups as well as a timer for instant hot water in the morning and in the evening. We have dual hot water tanks and a hot water coil system in the furnace. One could take a scaling 15 minute shower if that’s what they desired. The tanks were replaced less than a year ago and our timer goes back 2-3 years. As far as A/Cs they are all modern day a/cs. Neither of these have anything to do with the fact that we were built in 1871. We do state that we have stand alone units and do not have central a/c. Thank you again for your review, and we would be happy to welcome you back for any future trips to New York!

19th century charm in the Upper East

  • 5 of 5

Located a few blocks from Central Park, this place is just special. Its traditional facade matches the other houses, on a very picturesque street. Once inside, you find a little wooden staircase that gets you to the different rooms or floors. Each one of them has its own cared details. Antique furniture, tall iron frame beds with beautiful quilts, tidy shelves with French toile pottery, books, paintings and prints. It is well worth discovering it! Run by its owners and their assistants, the attention is also as wonderful. We’ve been here five times already, all the way from Argentina!

Both serene privacy and unmatched convenience will immediately endear you to 1871 House's lovely side block of townhouses and the Upper East Side neighborhood at large. East 62nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue is a quiet, tree-lined residential enclave for some of New York’s most prestigious addresses.

As mentioned, Central Park is only three short blocks from us, and the neighborhood has much, much else, to offer, from some of the finest boutiques and best restaurants in New York, to the fabulous Museum Mile, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The MET Breuer, and The Frick Collection, to the dream-row of all true shoppers, that stretch including Bloomingdale's, Barneys, Bendels and Bergdorf-Goodman. Further close attractions include Manhattan's exclusive Decoration & Design building (D&D building) and the Manhattan Art and Antiques Center, where architects, designers and collectors from around the world travel for the concentration of design and home furnishings showrooms and galleries.

For business-oriented guests, 1871 House is ideally located near Midtown Manhattan and is convenient to both Midtown East corporate offices and to those in Wall Street and the Financial District. Consequently, guests need not venture too far for meetings, seminars, functions and events.

Medical professionals, patients, families, and caregivers also appreciate our ideal location, minutes away from some of the country's best hospitals and medical facilities including Memorial Sloan Kettering (mskcc), Weill Cornell Medical College, Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, New York-Presbyterian hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, the Hospital for Special Surgery and Mount Sinai Hospital.

Other quintessential New York attractions quickly and easily reached from 1871 House include: Grand Central Station, Times Square and the Theatre District, the United Nations Headquarters, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
