Condo Joya del Sol ~ Luxurious Living ~ A Shell's Throw from the Beach

Bedrooms 2
Space 2,000 sq ft
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Tranquil. Private. Steps from the beach. Ten-minute stroll to town center.

If you’ve made the decision to vacation in the tranquil fishing village called Puerto Morelos, then you’re already aware of the serenity and authentic Mexican flavor of this hidden jewel tucked between Cancun and Playa del Carmen and only 20 minutes from the Cancun International airport.

Condo Joya del Sol (Jewel of the Sun) captures the serene essence of Puerto Morelos. It is only a shell’s throw from the white-sand beach which is protected by the second-largest reef in the world — out the door and toes-in-the-sand within 15 seconds! It is just far enough to escape traffic and “busy-ness,” yet a leisurely ten-minute stroll to the Plaza, restaurants, and shops. Vacationing here, there is no need for a car.

Because of its overall privacy and outdoor living areas, this ground-level unit with partial ocean-view feels like a home. With 2000 square feet of living areas, this two-bedroom, two-bath condo is more spacious than any other that is so convenient to both beach and town. Stress melts away as one steps through the gate into the tropical-plant-enclosed entrance.

Of course, there is air conditioning, but this condo is perfectly situated to maximize the refreshing sea breezes. Decorative security bars on all windows and doors ensure safety while one lives and sleeps with windows wide-open to enjoy birdsongs, gentle waves, and palm fronds rustling in the breeze.

Although the condominium/home is not totally handicap assessable, it is certainly handicap-friendly, with sturdy railings on either side of the three-stair-steps down from the kitchen/dining area to the bedroom level. Both baths have handicap bars in showers and beside the toilets.

The kitchen, with its hand-forged copper sink, has an open view to the dining and living areas. Glass-block windows let in natural light, as does the oversize sliding glass door opening from the living room to the pool.

Joya del Sol was my primary home for two years, so the furniture is delightfully comfortable. Interior paint throughout is by local artist, Daryl Eady. Daryl’s art, as well as that by another Puerto Morelos legend, Franziska Schuett (Zissi), graces the walls.

The master suite is truly a Sacred Space, like entering a luxurious hacienda of yesteryear. The Frida-Red, metallic bronze-and-gold ceiling is original art by Daryl Eady. Bamboo shades cover sliding-glass doors opening to two private, tropical-plant-enclosed patios. Unlike most Mexican beds, this one is deliciously comfortable - with a 4” memory-foam mattress topper. The oversize master bath with shower compliments the exotic golden-and-bronze bedroom with soothing tones of ivory and taupe, blended and shaded upward and onto the twelve-foot-tall ceiling to create the feel of entering a Roman bath. That feeling is sustained with an intimate two-person jetted tub in its curved, recessed, tiled space. Custom lighting highlights double sinks and the dressing area.

The spacious guest room is a cheery Caribbean blue and lime green. With a large sliding-glass door onto a private patio that leads to the outside gate and on to the beach, this is a sunny retreat. The guest bath, painted a rich Mexican Colonial blue to compliment the custom talavera lavatory and mirror, has a roomy shower and jack-and-jill doors to the bedroom and the hall.

Welcome to Joya del Sol….

About Mary Jordan

My husband and I purchased Joya del Sol in 2007, and we enjoyed vacations there together for several years, creating a handicap-friendly space. Since his passing, I invested more and more time in Puerto Morelos, eventually selling my Colorado home to live full-time in Mexico. You might want to check out my blog, particularly “My Past: It Lives in a Tuff Shed” at

Recently, I met someone wonderful, and we have established our home in the mountains of central Mexico, Guanajuato. Thus, my previous home -- Joya del Sol – is available to rent.

Mary Jordan purchased this condo in 2007

Why Mary Jordan chose Puerto Morelos

Most importantly, Puerto Morelos, one of the oldest communities on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, is safe. As a single woman, I feel secure strolling into town for dinner and drinks, then walking back home, even late at night. In addition, as an actual fishing village, Puerto Morelos has an authentic “Mexican” feel – with a comfortable mix of Nationals as well as ex-pats and vacationers. It’s the most convenient location ever, as one can snorkel, dive, relax, and get away from it all while being only 20 minutes from Cancun International Airport (for travel and for picking up family/friends) and only 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen or Cancun whenever I feel the need for more “touristy” shopping or nightlife. Its location on the Riviera Maya is central to attractions such as cenotes and archeological sites. The balmy climate is unsurpassed!

What makes this condo unique

Joya del Sol (Jewel of the Sun) is merely a shell’s throw from the beach -- out my door and onto the white-sand beach in 15 seconds. This ground-level home is as much like a “house” as a condominium can be – quality construction blocks external noise while fan-palms, hibiscus, and bougainvillea provide tropical atmosphere and privacy. Stress melts away as I step through my gate into the plant-enclosed entrance to the stained-glass front door with the blue-turquoise colors mirroring those of the sea. It is just far enough from the central Plaza to escape traffic and “busy-ness,” yet close enough to walk. Living here, there is no need for a car. With 2000 square feet of living areas, this two-bedroom, two-bath condominium is more spacious than any other that is located so conveniently to both beach and town. It is perfectly situated to maximize the refreshing sea breezes.

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The condo was much larger than in the photos! We were pleasantly surprised upon arrival and there was more than enough rooom for two adults and two 18-20 year old "kids" to spread out. It was so nice to be able to take a short walk to the beach to enjoy a cup of coffee in the mornings to watch to sun rise, and a great variety of restaurants were within walking distance without us feeling us like we were in the middle of a shopping district. It was just what we were looking for - a quiet place with access to all the amenities we needed, and without big crowds. Cenotes were easy to get to, reef snorkeling was a must-do and the beach was always welcoming. Everyone in the area was friendly and we didn't want to go home. Thank you for sharing Joya del Sol with us!

One of our best vacations

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a 5 night stay at Joya del Sol. We're a family of four with two boys ages 9 & 11, and wanted to stay away from the tourist chaos of Cancun and Playa. Have never been to Puerto Morelos before and we fell in love with it. Was still close to the ruins, Xplor, etc, but each day you returned to paradise. The beach takes about 30 seconds to walk to and the sand is perfect. Soft and cool. No rocks. There is a fair amount of sea grass that washes up -- not sure if that's seasonal, but by no means ruined our stay here. You can walk forever in the ocean and still be just waist deep. The condo is fantastic. Nicely decorated, clean. Perfect size for the four of us, but even 6 would not be too cramped. AC units in each room, but we rarely needed it. Fantastic breeze day and night. Maybe during the summer you would need it more? Condo is nestled among other small condos and homes, so overall quiet. Town is nice. Has some good places to eat. If you're looking for Cancun nightlife, this is the wrong place. But if you just want to relax, without being too far secluded, this is it! Would definitely return! Thanks, Mary, for sharing your condo!

What an amazing place!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just returned from a one-week vacation in Puerto Morelos. This rental property is a true gem, and definitely enhanced our vacation experience! Upon arrival, the property manager was waiting for us, and gave us a quick tour of the condo and the property. This place is huge...much bigger than the photos describe!! Since there were just 2 of us, there was ample space available. The master bedroom is very comfortable! We hardly used the AC, and relied more on the open patio doors. The condo is so well situated that there was always a nice cool breeze throughout. This place provided us with all the amenities required. We particularly liked the use of the beach chairs, towels, and snorkelling equipment. Communication with the owner was very easy, and we truly felt welcomed into her home. She provided us with a wealth of information about the condo and offered a full array of suggestions of things to do and see in Puerto Morelos. This quiet little fishing village does not disappoint! If you're looking for a nice quiet, relaxing vacation that is slightly off the beaten path, this is the place for you! Since we are not a fan of all-inclusive resorts and prefer to do our own thing, this place suited our needs perfectly! I highly recommend this place and hope to return again some day!

Perfect retreat situated in a new favorite city

  • 5 of 5

Not sure where to start! We've been home now for four days and can't stop reminiscing about Puerto Morelos and Mary's lovely home that perfectly accommodated us for seven days. We were looking for a vacation that rivals the western fishing village of Sayulita when it was a bit more quiet and "undiscovered." Puerto Morelos was highly recommended on blogs/chat rooms/etc. For our physical location within the city, we wanted to stay away from resorts, truly immerse ourselves into the village, but leave a little distance between the city center's nightlife and our vacation home. BINGO! This was it! All the amenities of home, the beauty of Mexico, and the perfect distance to the beach (a minute by foot) and the city center (10 minutes by foot). Even walking to/from the city every day we would find something new to see, an undiscovered breakfast spot, or a new gato/perro to give some love.

As with other Mexico cities I've visited (this was my husband's first time), the locals are just as hospitable and friendly. The city felt safe and inviting. The food was SPECTACULAR. Mary had a wonderful list of restaurants, activities, excursions, etc. to use as somewhat of her own "Yelp" page. We used it as our primary guidebook and added to it along the way. When we weren't in PM, we were on the ADO bus going to a cenote or Tulum's Mayan ruins. It's by far the cheapest and most comfortable way to get around if traveling further than 15 minutes. ADO is comparable to Greyhound. Again, safe and clean.

We found ourselves "at home" only in the mornings and later at night - we spent most time at the beach and sightseeing - but when we were there it was perfect. We cooked breakfast most mornings and rested in the living room most nights before heading to the huge master with a super comfortable king bed. Two sets of sliding glass doors allowed for a nice, peaceful breeze. On a hot night we used the AC unit and it cooled us down quickly! While we didn't use the guest room or guest bathroom, both were filled with all the comforts of home and beautiful artwork hung from all walls.

Finally, the property manager Claudia lives and works right there in the city and was extremely helpful. She was the first person we saw when we got there and the last we said goodbye to when we left. She will help with any needs, including activities during the stay.

My husband and I will be extremely lucky to visit this city & home again! Thank you, Mary!

Just what we wanted!

  • 5 of 5

Spent two weeks at Joya del Sol in January 2016. I've been to Puerto Morelos many times before, but this was the most spacious and beautiful place I've stayed. The property manager is extremely helpful. She rented me a bike for a great price, and was always available for questions. The condo is large and the layout is great. The living room area is large, with a raised dining area and an open counter/bar into the kitchen. The kitchen is well-equipped - we did nearly all our own cooking while we were there. The bedrooms are spacious and each have a sitting area inside AND little patios outside - nice private reading spaces. There is a private entrance and it feels quite secluded. Lots of wonderful art pieces throughout the place - we kept discovering more and more. It's nice to have two bathrooms, though the water pressure in the showers left a lot to be desired.

The beach is just half a block away and the town square is only about a ten-minute walk away. Great location.

There is a massive king-sized bed in the large living room and a queen and a futon in the second bedroom. Plenty of room for extra family. You'll love it here. There's even a pool, though we didn't use it, as the beach was right there.

Just steps to a beautiful beach

  • 4 of 5

We wanted a less touristy experience for our vacation and that's exactly what we found.

The town of Puerto Morelos is a quiet, clean, safe little town. We loved everything about it from the kids playing soccer in the square to the bread/dessert truck that comes around each night and of course the yummy ice cream in a homemade waffle cone.

The walk from the condo to get to town is about a mile. You can walk on the beach with cool breezes or on the quiet road with almost no cars. It's a perfect time to spend chatting with the family. After dinner you can easily take a taxi back for only a few pesos. We even rented bikes for a few days and that was a nice way to get to and from town.

The condo is spacious. The kitchen was a bit small and would not be ideal if you plan to do a lot of cooking but it was fine for our needs. The family room was not as cozy as we would have hoped for, we would have liked some more comfortable seating for our group and a tv for a video in the evening along woth some comfy blankets to wrap up in would have been nice. The bathrooms are big and accommodating for 6 people. However the shower heads were not working great and hot water has a few issues. Claudia the property manager was very helpful in this and any other issues or necessities. We felt that we could call her any time and she would be right over to help. She also helped us with bike and car rental and advice for excursions, she was the best!!

The master bedroom is enormous with two lovely private patios with sliding doors that open up to allow the ocean breezes in. The bed is huge and very comfortable.

The second bedroom could use an upgrade there was only one bed so not enough for our family of 6 but an air bed was provided and so we managed.

There is a sliding door from there with all the beach necessities available from chairs umbrellas to kayaks and snorkel gear. Out that door and through a gate and your on your way to the most beautiful beach which we had almost to ourselves most of our stay. The ocean is beautiful and we were able to see barracuda other fish and even a couple sting rays right at our beach! It was amazing! We did a snorkel tour with Arturo from Breckos Dive Shop! His boat is docked right in front of our beach. We saw a manta and held sting rays! He is the best!

Despite a few things we would have liked to be improved it didn't hinder our vacation in anyway and we would be back in a heart beat even if nothing was improved. Loved It!!
