romantic beachfront bungalow In paradise eco preserve, chimo, near yelapa

Bedrooms 1
Space 25 m²
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

One Bedroom beach bungalow, on the beach, Large Deck, Wide Ocean Views

Welcome to the beautiful private eco preserve of Los Chonchos, a hidden paradise about a twenty minute boat ride south from Yelapa. The resort consists of twenty bungalows and a restaurant set in twenty five acres of exotic jungle with three pristine palm fringed beaches.

Casa de Pirata is the only property right on the beach, and just a short stroll from the beachfront restaurant, yet remains incredibly private, with its own pathway winding through coconut palms and banana trees.

There's great trekking up in the jungle, a sea kayak at your disposal, and you sleep to the sound of waves breaking on the shore.

Our casa is a traditional Mexican open-plan palapa - simple but comfortable, with rustic furniture all made by local craftspeople. There's a queen bed with open ocean views, an ensuite inside/outside bathroom with hot shower, and a basic but well equipped kitchen with a gas stove, fridge freezer and mobile/laptop recharging station. There's also a drinking fountain if you'd prefer to drink bottled water.

Outside there are decks on two sides of the palapa with amazing views across the main beach and out to the open ocean - great for whale watching ! There are a pair of loungers, hammock, an outside dining bbq area, and a rinse shower on the pathway to the beach.

We also provide two sets of snorkelling gear, life jackets for kayaking, fresh bedding, towels and light cotton robes.

Los Chonchos eco resort is only accessible by boat, or on foot, so totally peaceful, and just the best place to unwind and immerse yourself in nature. No news, no shoes...

Water comes from a spring high up in the hills above, and power simply solar or propane - pollution and noise are kept to a minimum as this is a big turtle nesting site.

It's also a fantastic place to see humpback whales, dolphins, mantas (they leap here!), iguanas, frigate birds, macaws, pelicans, bats, butterflies and dragonflies. There's great snorkelling straight from the beach, with an amazing variety of fish, and the chance of seeing mantas, eagle rays and turtles if lucky.

The beach is a good 50 metre swim, or for really serious swimmers, our third beach just around the corner is way, way longer... and it's often the case that yours are the only footprints in the sand ! Between the two is a small pebbly cove which is great for beach combing.

The support crew here are just lovely - they'll meet you and off the boat, get you settled in, and be on hand should you need anything during your stay.

Alphonso runs the restaurant on site (2-3 meals a day average around $75 per couple), and can also bring next-day groceries... and Arturo runs an excellent fish and seafood restaurant in Chimo, a totally univaded and charming fishing village an hour's trek along the coast. He'll even give you a boat ride back if stranded with too much shopping !

Or take the water taxi for an excursion to Yelapa, which has a wider choice of stores, and a good range of activities from yoga to pony trekking up to the lovely waterfall.

Further afield, trips can be arranged for whale watching (migration season is October-March) and Los Islas Marietas - a top dive and snorkelling site in the bay.

The boat taxi Nayeli leaves from Boca de Tomatlan at 0900 and 1500 daily, returning at 1100 and 1700, and you should allow an hour to get to Boca from Puerto Vallarta airport.

On booking, we'll of course send you a full information sheet, and be on hand with any questions you may have, or whatever we can help with to make your stay as wonderful as possible !

About michael shirra

hi - I'm michael, english, but was raised in East Africa, Uganda, and have spent several years living in rural France and have freelanced extensively around Australasia, so something of a gypsy....

I trained in fine art, then taught photograpy before moving into visual effects work for movies. I currently live and work in Singapore for Lucas Film.

my daughter Lara has just finished high school and is taking a year out travelling before starting a degree in creative writing. She's also big on singing, dance and drama.

I'm a really keen swimmer (rubbish on dry land..) and love snorkelling, kayaking and most watersports. I'm into music, yoga, reading, photography and travel - I like to escape cities where work always tends to be and to get back to nature.

I've also just started training as a glider pilot, which is something I now wish I'd started years ago... I had no idea how magical it is !

michael shirra purchased this cabin in 2014

Why michael shirra chose Chimo

I came to stay here for a week in September 2014, in the rainy season, simply fell in love with the place, and didn't hesitate to go ahead and buy it.

los chonchos is just so special, and a total escape and sanctuary from the modern world. I love that there's no car access, no traffic, no noise... all you can hear are fantastic sounds of the nature all around, and here you just feel totally immersed in it. dragonflies, fireflies, bats, pelicans, frigate birds, humpback whales, dolphins, mantas, turtles, iguanas, parrots - and an amazing variety of fish to snorkel with. Also the beach is a good 50 metre length, and I loved swimming up and down it.

Also, the support crew, Gabriel, Ruben and Arturo, are just a delight - and the main reason I'm now trying to learn Spanish !

What makes this cabin unique

this is the best located shack in terms of the beach, and second closest to the restaurant, and has a complimentary sea kayak at your disposal. fantastic views from the deck, lounge and bed, either to the beach, the open ocean, or the sierras of the opposite shore of the bay of banderas. the palapa's made with traditional materials, design and techniques, and most furniture has been hand crafted my local artisans.

Los Chonchos--Un Paraiso Mexicano. A Perfect Escape From Worldly Cares

  • 5 of 5

Los Chonchos is a tropical paradise--a place that reminded me of a 10 year old boy's dreams of running away from home, stowing aboard a schooner, being shipwrecked and washing up on a secluded and pristine sandy beach, gentle surf lapping at his toes; the lush jungle and fluted mountains rising above the beach.

I am a 65 year old solo traveller and that dream came true for me in the most amazing place I have yet to stay on my travels--even if I wasn't shipwrecked:)

Mike and Lara's beautiful and serene, traditional palapa tucked into the jungle and only steps from the first of three amazing beaches met all my expectations for a perfect getaway--I loved the traditional high ceiling, the wood floors and shutters and a bed with a view towards the ocean and open to the sounds of surf and a gentle night breeze. I'm glad I brought a fleece jacket. I appreciated the charging stations as I had brought a small bluetooth speaker and video recorder.

I swam and snorkled in warm, clear, green-hued water; walked along a beautiful beach where the only footprints were mine. I both paddled to the town of Chimo and walked there along a jungle trail; I wouldn't have missed doing both--Chimo is an interesting town to explore, again very friendly. And the food at the two restaurants, Arturo's and Antonio's was amazing.

While I enjoyed my solitude on the beaches and on the palapa's decks I also engaged with and got to know a wonderful community of owners who quickly became friends, invited me to dinner gatherings and shared their life stories and experiences. And night time became another magical experience--lying in a hammock, listening to Mexican ballads I had downloaded, hearing the surf and watching a full moon shine across the water.

At Los Chonchos life takes on a rhythmic beat that you can feel around you--in the birds, butterflies, tropical fish and even within your own heart. Conversation slows down and becomes more meaningful as you sit on the edge of the sand, looking towards the silver thread on the horizon that separates water and sky. And as the whales pass by you remember what you felt as a child--that sense of being humbled, nurtured and sustained by beauty and nature's bounty.

Thanks to Mike and Lara for sharing, not only their palapa, but also their love of Los Chonchos.

Mike was incredibly helpful in the preparations for my journey and stay. My only regret was leaving--my stay was far too short. I am already planning my return.

Yes! Staying in Los Chonchos for the second time was just as amazing as the first time.

  • 5 of 5

I knew, when I discovered Los Chonchos a year ago and spent 3 amazing days at Casa De Pirata, that I would return, this time for a longer stay. When I retired 4 years ago I decided to follow a dream I’ve had since I was a teenager—that of becoming a writer. As is often the case, life got in the way of that dream but on this visit to Los Chonchos I brought a manuscript with me. Nothing was more pleasurable and productive than waking early and writing for four hours, sitting on Mike and Lara’s new deck; pencil, paper and coffee in hand, feeling the world awaken around me. Los Chonchos is an amazing place to allow creative passions to flower. Of course there are distractions...two black iguanas, mother and baby warming themselves on rocks only metres away from the deck. Fishing boats from Chimo passing by along with the occasional Humpbacks, butterflies and birds and the surf that rocks a constant basso rhythm. It was good to see owners again who quickly became friends on my first visit and to also get to know new visitors to Los Chonchos. Chemo is a delightful village—so great to eat lunch at Antonios and Arturos and return home with fresh snapper for my evening meal. I took a day trip to Yelapa. Enjoyed a great lunch at Bahia cafe and then wandered through the winding streets of the old town. There is a wonderful young Huichel woman who makes and sells traditional beaded jewelry from a corner table in the cafe. Her work is very good and reasonably priced.

I was so happy to see Chelano and Saul still working at Los Chonchos. I received a goodbye hug from Chelano after he had loaded my gear onto the Nayeli taxi, that left me leaving with tears in my eyes. And an understanding of what makes Los Chonchos so special. You will meet people there who live with their hearts and arms wide open. Such disarming smiles that radiate a welcoming presence. Thanks for Mike and Laura for sharing their palappa and allowing me to experience this very special place. As always, my very best to the both of you. Ron N.

this is truly a magical place! I felt like I was washed ashore on a deserted beach!

  • 5 of 5

You are really on your own here so be prepared this is not for everyone! The water taxi was like being on a bucking bronco. The water can be rough and we had to jump in the water! People help you with your luggage but is was quite an entrance. But when you walk into the bungalow and see that ocean you start to slowly unwind and immerse in the beauty and peace! Michael is a wonderful host and provided us with all the useful information about getting there and what to expect. He is prompt if you have any questions. Be prepared with supplies. Don’t think there is a restaurant. We never saw anyone and did all our own cooking. You can restock in Yelapa and spend the day in a charming fishing village. The only place where there is internet. They have everything you need, tequila, avocados, tortillas and more! We made wonderful meals with some of the local shrimp. You can hike through the jungle to Chimo and have a meal at Arturo’s. It’s a killer hike but amazing! After about our third day the ocean quieted down and we kayaked to Chimo! Much easier than hiking. The water was wonderful for swimming, snorkeling or fishing! We saw whales every day! We even saw a boa constrictor on the beach! It was really a wonderful experience! I have never seen such a beautiful beach! We were all alone then we met some owners who we became friends with and they had all kinds of stories to tell in their years of going there. Michael’s place has almost everything you need for cooking! The shower took some getting used to but the bed was comfortable. The deck is incredible and we spent most of our time there watching the ocean and listening to the crashing waves! We loved it!

An escape to paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a vacations spot! Los Chonchos was gorgeous! My girlfriend and I spend 6 nights here and we wish we could stay much longer. The palapa was beautiful! The deck was amazing! What a view! The ocean waves at night was quite soothing. We loved hiking around in the jungle. We kayaked over to Chimo which was a lot of fun. I can't say enough about this little place, we absolutely loved it!

When taking a taxi to La Boca, make sure you're only paying around 250 pesos from Puerto Vallarta. Our taxi driver tried to rip us off. La Boca was a really cool little bay. The water taxi was exciting and became a routine ride by the time we left. I would also recommend to REALLY stock up on food and pesos before leaving Puerto Vallarta. This place is "glamping" but what a gem of a spot, thank you Michael for letting us stay!

Wonderful way to slow down

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 5 nights at Casa de Pirata. It was a great place to slow down and live simply. The accomodations were wonderful and more than sufficient to our needs. The people we met at Los Chonchos were welcoming and helpful. Yelapa and Chimo were easy day trips from the palapa. We would love to return!

Owner's Response: thanks Anna, lovely to hear you had a good time - and yes, it's easy to lose track of what day it is at Los Chonchos ! And thanks for all the useful feedback - the palm leaves have just been thinned around the deck today so the view should be a lot more expansive again - sorry it was obscured while you were staying. Things grow at an incredible rate there ! warmest, michael
