About this property

Historic House near Kaaterskill Falls

Welcome to the Arlington, a historic house rental in Palenville, New York. Originally built during the Civil War as a summer retreat, this 4-bedroom self-catering property offers the quiet, space, and charms of the country. Located in the first art colony of America on the banks of the Kaaterskill Creek, the Arlington is a hassle-free homebase for exploring the region or hitting the local hiking trails to The Kaaterskill Falls, North and South Lake.

The Arlington is located on Main Street in Palenville, New York. This recently renovated Civil War Inn has a weeping willow in the front yard and a 10-foot deep wrap around porch. The expansive great room (30×30) includes a kitchen with full-size fridge, four-burner stove, microwave, and overhead ceiling fans. The bright, sunny living room (27×20) has wide planked wood floors, period brass fans, and a decorative fireplace.

Across the street from the Arlington is Circle W Market, a general store focused on local and organic foods that dates back to 1908. Walking distance to Rip & Wolf Wine Store, Home and Trail and The Griffin House. Palenville is also home to the Rip Van Winkle Country Club, and The Rip Van Winkle Brewery.

The peaceful town of Palenville, New York was founded as the first Art Colony in America by Asher B. Durand. The historic Otis Railway, a funicular that carried people up to the Catskill Mountain House, is nearby. Kaaterskill Creek—an inspiration for many famous painters and paintings—runs through the backyard of the property.

Perfect
We stayed for Thanksgiving week, gathering with our family for the first time this year. Perfect house: quaint, clean, homey and well equipped. Delightful kitchen; better than most VRBO properties. Outstanding trails within a stone’s throw. Breweries and cideries served the purpose of great drinks and a great location for watching World Cup. The owner was communicative and proactive in every way possible. A great property and great location. Perfect for a family with dogs that love the outdoors and food. Highly recommended!

Spacious Home away from home
I had a great experience staying in this spacious, comfortable soulful house. Everything was sparkling clean and the kitchen well stocked with anything you might need including high quality Alclad cookware. Great big yard for barbecues. Perfect place for family to gather comfortably. Brian is a great host. I will be back

Amazing place, Great character
We stayed here while attending a wedding at Kaaterskill Inn. Super convenient, 6 minutes away from the venue. The house was lovely, clean, and had great spaces to hang out. The main room is very open with comfortable furniture and lots of places to lounge. The porch is just a dream as well. Sleeping was very comfortable with big beds and excellent bedding. All around amazing spot!

About the host

I grew up at The Arlington, and have spent many years restoring it. I split my time between Palenville and Manhattan.

Why they chose this property

The house is so big, 3000 square feet, that you can get lost in it. Large groups of people can find their own private quiet space, while coming together in the spacious kitchen/great room or living room with both featuring 11 foot ceilings.

What makes this property unique

Centrally located for day trips to all the surrounding towns. Go antiquing in Hudson. Shopping, dining and gallery hopping in Woodstock. Hits Equestrian Events in Saugerties. Ski Hunter or Windham Mountains. Hike from the house to The Kaaterskill Falls, and North and South Lakes.
