**RESERVE EARLY FOR SUMMER/FALL: We had a fantastic summer-through-October 2017 rental season, booked solid with great guests. Some are already making plans to return next year! We hope to meet you.

Now here's the description:

Hello! Here at Fish Point we're unique in welcoming not only summer and fall vacationers, but also, year-round, business travelers or medical personnel needing a longer stay, and people desiring artist-retreat rentals: writers, visual artists, and composers/songwriters. *

While we know some travelers look for a stand-alone house, this is not "just an apartment." As one happy guest remarked when he first walked in: "You have a palazzo [a palace] here!" We're highly respectful of our guests' needs for peace and privacy. Meanwhile, we're available for special needs, help in emergencies, the latest tips and advice about the area.

Our home was built in 2002, on a 3-1/2 acre property with a fascinating Revolutionary War history. The house is right along quiet Fickett's Point Road, on the back side of Narraguagus Bay just minutes from Milbridge's center. It's a great road for scenic walks & biking. Cross the broad field behind our house, and you come to a footbridge leading to our own wooded peninsula, used only by our family and guests, which gives you 270-degree views of the ocean, bay, town, and spectacular sunsets across the water. Enjoy the sights from the trail, the benches, or take a meal out to the picnic table! Sunsets are spectacular out there.

A set of stairs leads you down to the beach, one of the rare sand beaches on the Maine coast--along with the large boulders characteristic of the area. We're near the town marina, and kayak rentals are nearby.

We live in the adjoining house, which we've made sonically and visually private from the 1300 SF apartment. The rental apartment is all on the ground floor, with its own private entrances, garden, and a patio/terrace facing the water. The facility is handicap-accessible, with wide doorways and hall, and flooring of tile, wood and low-nap carpeting--smooth surfaces for walkers or wheelchairs. We have a golf cart in which we can ferry less walking-abled guests out to the Point on request.

Bedrooms are large for this part of Maine. Two have queen beds, and one a double bed with electric comfort controls. One Queen BR has its own private bathroom with shower. The other two BR's share a bathroom with a large tiled shower. The fully appointed kitchen has excellent appliances, including dishwasher and high quality LP gas range/oven. And of course a lobster pot! The dining area is off the large living room, and the apartment has its own washer & dryer. Decor and furnishings are charming, restful--and unique, not off-the-rack.

Other amenities: New flat-screen television with Direct TV, Netflix, internet music programs and other bundled services. High-speed DSL. Most cell services work fine in our location. Access to landline on request. Small library, games for rainy days, etc.

Since acquiring this home in April 2014, we've been gradually restoring the lovely garden beds that surround the entire house. They combine native and wild plants with more formal plantings. The apartment has its own "secret garden" area, and private patio with a view across the fields and bay.

Though 2014 was our first year at Fish Point, we've owned a vacation cottage in Milbridge since 2008, and have rented to travelers since 2009. We've gotten raves from our renters at both properties! (See note about the other one in "Owner Story.")

LOCATION, LOCATION: Guests often tell us how happy they are about our geographic location, too, since we're about equidistant from Mt. Desert Island (Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor) and the farthest-east coastal towns like Lubeck and Eastport -- and Campobello Island! Do bring passports if you plan to visit Campobello, since it's Canadian. It's easy to make a day or half-day trip to these famous, fascinating vacation spots from our place.

2016 was the 100th ANNIVERSARY year of ACADIA NATIONAL PARK. The main part of the Park is on Mount Desert Island, about 50 minutes from us. But a less-known section, Schoodic Point, is just about 20 minutes away, and is quieter, fewer crowds, same breath-taking views. Schoodic Point, this part of Acadia that Mainers tend to frequent, also has a fine information and conference center and campground, and is near many art and craft studios.

* Our guests' vacation and retreat rental fees help to support the work of Sunrise County Arts Institute, the small Maine non-profit we founded in 2014 as a resource for quality music, theater, writing and visual arts activities in Milbridge and the DownEast/Acadia area.

TRAVELERS WITH PETS: We run as allergy-free a home as possible, for ourselves as well as our guests. We do ask guests to arrange for their animals to stay at home. But a single well-behaved HYPOALLERGENIC-ONLY dog may be considered. (These are dogs with hair rather than fur/dander; for example, Havanese, bichon, poodle, Maltese.) We have a sweet Havanese ourselves. Extra security deposit and/or cleaning surcharge may be requested if a pet is approved.

The town of Milbridge is the entryway to the Bold Coast Regional Byway, whose scenic beauties, stretching all the way north/eastward to Campobello Island and the Canadian border, are unrivaled on the East Coast.

Milbridge's Main Street area has a supermarket, banks, pharmacy, Post Office, local shops, Historical Society, art gallery, 4 restaurants (including a superb Mexican eatery and a great seafood shanty on the edge of town), massage and chiropractic services, and much more. Shops include River Lily, a great place to buy unique, beautiful gifts, cards and kitchen items. Saturday is outdoor Farmer's Market day during summer & early fall. Boat tour companies offer either whale watching or local island tours, where you can see the puffins up close in season.

About 4 miles from Milbridge center is McClellan Park, bequeathed to the Town by the Civil War General's estate, where you can enjoy spectacular views of the bay, rock formations and surrounding islands. (Though you can stay right on our own peninsula at Fish Point and enjoy similar views, plus access the beach directly!)

Cherryfield, a few miles inland of us along the Narraguagus River, has beautiful Victorian houses, events at historic Cherryfield Academy, the outdoor bandshell and the VFW.

In nearby Steuben, you can wander the back roads, shop at Darthia organic farm, tour Bartlett's Winery, and hike and bird-watch at Petit Manaan Wildlife Refuge.

We're about 35 minutes past Ellsworth, the turnoff to Acadia National Park, and 20 minutes past the less-touristy section of the park known as Schoodic Point--where Mainers go for the same scenery and no crowds. The whole Schoodic area has a winding road off Rt 1, along which are many craft studios, antique shops, and delightful eateries like the Pickled Wrinkle--which in our opinion has the best fish chowder ever! plus an excellent Jazz afternoon at least once a week. Schoodic Arts for All offers lots of cultural events, from bluegrass to classical music, and art shows and workshops, plus activities for kids, at Hammond Hall and its other facilities.

North and eastward beyond us along the coast road are Roque Bluffs, with a golf course and lovely public sand beach; and Jasper Beach, with sea-polished jasper stones, one of only 2 such beaches in the world. The other is in Japan! Detour off the main road to towns like Columbia Falls, Addison, and charming Jonesport, too.

As you head through Machias, a small city with its own goodly supply of shops and facilities, you'll find the local Farmers' Market plus outdoor stalls. The hardware store is anything but just tools--you'll find natural remedies, interesting food items and more. Gluten-free pizza lovers will enjoy Pat's Pizza on the outskirts of Machias--there's also a Pat's parlor in Ellsworth.

The little town of Lubeck is an interesting fishing village. One of our favorite shops there is Dianne's Glass. The owner makes all the items in the store, from beautiful dichroic glass jewelry to other types of elegant gift items.

From Lubeck (bring your passports!) you can cross the bridge into Canada's Campbello Island, home of Roosevelts, among others. Bring your hiking shoes too, and you can trek over to the lighthouse, a great place to bird-watch and pick up a little more local history.

After your visit to Campobello, if you continue along the coast road to Eastport you'll pass Monica's Chocolates. Do not pass! Go in and sample her wonderful candy, and her to-die-for hot chocolate, plus Peruvian clothing and other items. The tour of the Ray's Mustard plant nearby --the only place left in the US where mustard's made the old-fashioned millstone-ground way--is fun for adults and a good activity for curious kids. You won't believe the number of flavors they make, sold in the factory store.

Eastport itself, the closest coastal town in the US to mainland Canada, is full of lovely shops, good eateries, galleries, an art museum, and a very active Arts Center, where you might find anything from a new painting exhibition to a theater production or chamber music concert. If you want to avoid the longer boat trip from Milbridge to get to where the whales are, consider starting your whale watching ride from Eastport.

These are just some of the things we enjoy most about the Downeast and Schoodic area. We know you'll make your own discoveries and tell us all about them!
