The lodge is powered by a hydro-generator. It is off grid, green electricity. The quantity of available electricity is dependent on creek flows.

There is access to hiking trail and many onsite activities right from the lodge. Bair Ranch offers onsite horseback riding, ATV adventures, chuckwagon dinners, trap shooting, hunting and wildlife and livestock viewing. We are the closest lodging to the magnificent Hanging Lake. About Jim Bair

We are the Bair Family. My great grand parents purchased the home I now live in in the early 1920s. We have been ranching in the area since the early 1900s.

Bair Ranch is one of the oldest family owned and operated working ranches in Colorado. We are a working sheep ranch running approximately 10,000 mother ewes and their lambs. We are located 12 miles east of Glenwood Springs just minutes from Aspen and Vail. We offer our guests a stay at 5,500 acres of private gated open space in the beautiful Glenwood Canyon.

Jim Bair purchased this lodge in 1924

Why Jim Bair chose Glenwood Springs

This is our family home and it has been for 5 generations. We have made our lives here. This land is both rugged and beautiful. It can be a harsh land at times and a lush land at other times. It sustains wildlife and livestock. It has been and is a great place to raise children. The Glenwood Springs area offers so many activities. It is a family oriented small town with big opportunities for recreation and entertainment. We are located 12 miles east of town so for us it is nice to leave town and come home.

What makes this lodge unique

You are not just coming to a rental property but an entire ranch property. Not only will you love your lodging accommodations but you our on site activities include horseback riding, ATV adventures, jeep tours, fishing, camping, cabins, hiking, biking, chuckwagon cookouts and BBQs. We can arrange rafting on the Colorado River as well. Even the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Pool is a short drive and minutes from the ranch.

Our cabins are private, cozy and exclusive. At the ranch you will get an authentic experience, not a commercial campground experience. You will have a private experience, not a public experience. You have room to enjoy the outdoors and share time with other members of your group.

Because we are a private, gated ranch you have all these benefits while still having the opportunity of being near the resort towns of Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Vail. You can go into town and then return to the privacy of your own cabin and grounds area.

I rented this place for my birthday party in the past weekend. It was a totally DISASTER!! We arrived the cabin, there are died flies everywhere on the floor, a died bird on the porch and the nasty smell. Seems that nobody have lived here for years! The cabin "manager" just told us it was NORMAL for a place like this. Luckily they cleaned it when we were gone for a hike. But when we were back to the cabin at night, we were just about to start cooking, the electricity was out!! Coz the generator was more than 60 years old and does not have enough power to support the cabin! It was so dark and we were in the middle of nowhere with no phone signals, we have to drive down the mountain to give the "Manager" a call. The "Manager" could not care less about the guests and she refuse to do anything to fix it and told us that she is SLEEPY! We left the cabin in the middle of the night, since there is NO ELECTRICITY and we did not feel safe. It was a totally DISASTER for me. If you are looking for a place that has NO HOSPITALITY and NO ELECTRICITY, Congratulation, you just found it !

Owner's Response: We appreciate you booking with us, however we also appreciate honesty. This is a 5 + star lodging accommodation and well kept, thank you. This remote lodge is ran by Hydroelectricity. For your education, it is generated by water and it provides all electricity to the lodge. All guests are instructed upon arrival, as you were, to be conservative with power. This means that not all lights may be used at once. We simply ask guests once they move from one room to another to turn off lights they are not using. This is echo-friendly and necessary to maintain power for such a large lodge in a remote location. We also ask all guests to provide an accurate number of guests staying. This number was clearly under-exaggerated with your booking. When your party arrived at the Lodge late that night (at least 11 PM) and you proceeded to bring extra friends and party the lights were not conservatively used. When cleaning staff arrived in the morning all lights had been left on, which is why you experienced a power outage. It is quite difficult for us to find maintenance help near the middle of the night. Please feel free to read all of the Lodging description. Here you will find that this is not a Lodge in the city. Frequent wildlife can and will be seen near the Lodge. This includes some flies which were quickly cleaned up after by staff . Please feel free to read all Lodging descriptions online before booking. We are happy to answer any questions online or via phone in order to insure you are choosing a place suitable for your group. In the future, renters would appreciate your honesty and proper care of their accommodations.

Beautiful place.

  • 4 of 5

Beds were very comfortable. Everything was very nice. My only suggestion would be for the caretakers to air out the lodge prior to someone staying. It smelled so strongly of chemical or varnish it took 2 days to air that out and tone it down. It was really bad. I would recommend getting screens for the doors upstairs so the place could be opened up more and get better air circulation.

Great Family Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We had 9 adults and 7 kids including 2 new babies on our annual family getaway. (We also rented the Caribou Cabin just a 5 minute walk away). The lodge was beautiful and had more than enough space for all of us. There are 2 powder rooms on the main floor as well as the bathroom upstairs with a shower. We never had an issue with not having " a turn" in the shower. The kitchen was perfect for cooking meals for a crowd. We made breakfast for everyone every morning we were there. We pre-cooked 2 dinners and took them up with us as I was nervous about the hydroelectric. Not a problem though. The wrap around deck was a great place for the kids to play. We saw wildlife every day including deer, elk, weasels, marmots, etc. We enjoyed sitting out by the fire at night and roasting marshmallows and the star-gazing was unbeatable! Only a few drawbacks...the bedrooms are upstairs and with no windows that open, it can get pretty hot and stuffy. Also, the generator is quite noisy as is the kitchen area fan and they run all the time. The drive up to our lodge took about 15 minutes from the ranch gate but it wasn't a big deal for us. Glenwood Springs has plenty of hotels if that is a problem for you. We enjoyed being on an historic Colorado ranch. The Bair family was very gracious.

Not for the Timid, But Overall Very Enjoyable

  • 4 of 5

This property is a large log home located very high on the mountain and can be reached only over about 2 miles of rutted rocky road that gets extremely slick with the slightest rain. The House itself needs more maintenance, but was rather fun as we tried to find appropriate switches for the many lights, appliances, and fans. There was only one bathroom that had a shower - a bit of a challenge for our party of five. The Owners/Staff were very friendly and provided maximum assistance when asked. There is no television and no internet or Wi-Fi available, no cell service. Suggest to the owners that they repair the ceiling fans and provide switches allowing guests to more selectively turn on or off individual fans. One fan's blades actually banged against the ceiling, creating a loud "whack" that made it difficult to sleep (and there was no switch to turn just that fan off). We did have fun at the property, and were able to survive the challenges with good humor.

Authentic Colorado!

  • 4 of 5

This place was truly an authentic Colorado ranch lodge. The creek level was high so there was plenty of power and hot water, however, the high water meant that we had to be shuttled back to the lodge until it was low enough to get our SUV through it. The van could not ford the creek. The family was very accommodating in shuttling us. This place is off the grid and a great place to get away from the internet, emails and cell phones. The night sky was amazing and we could see the Milky Way. A few suggestions: more seating inside (couches and easy chairs), blinds for the east facing windows to block out the morning sun and heat, label the light switches and give a proper tutorial on the gas stove (restaurant quality!). Lots to do on the ranch if you make reservations and in Glenwood Springs nearby.

Huge log cabin, well equipped, off the grid

  • 4 of 5

We rented this cabin for a party of 10. The cabin itself is gigantic, the common areas (including a massive patio) could host a party for 120 people. The cabin is well equipped: industrial size gas stove (with double oven and griddle), kitchen ware, outdoor grill (charcoal only). There are 3 bedrooms upstairs, 1 bathroom with showers. Also they have about 20 stuffed animals in the lobby - quite eclectic.

Things to keep in mind when coming here:

- the cabin is situated on a massive ranch. They offer ATV tours, horseback riding and other activities. With that in mind, there is about a mile-long dirt road that goes up to the cabin, which is not recommended for regular cars, luckily we all had SUVs.

- The hosts are very nice people, only one negative is that in the middle of our stay they came to show around a wedding planner, which was a bit awkward. They did ask for our permission to do this.

- The grounds around the cabin are a bit neglected, which adds to the charm in a way. the little pond upfront is not suited for swimming or water sports.

- we did lose power one night (dont use the microwave), we found some candles and it actually turned out to be a nice experience.

All in all, if you are planning to be completely off the grid for a few days, this is a great spot. I could see potential for corporate team buildings as well. Also being about 30 minutes from Glenwood Springs, you can check out the thermal baths and other cool stuff around town.
