About Jake Jacobs

Wendy and Jake Jacobs have been married over 50 years and have always loved adventure and challenges. They have two sons with whom they work on multiple projects. Jake a former fighter pilot has owned several businesses over the years and they have lived in 7 states. However, upon moving to the Amis Farm in east TN, Wendy declared she was 'home' and Jake agreed. The Jacobs have loved working with old properties beginning with restoring an antibellum plantation home in Louisiana, an 1885 log cabin in Colorado and an 1890 Victorian in South Carolina. Saving the best for last they are now restoring her 5th Great Grandfathers home and community near Rogersville, TN. Making a great team, Jake does the design and construction and Wendy adds the flair and fluff.

Jake Jacobs purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Jake Jacobs chose Rogersville

Wendy Jacobs and her husband Jake had the opportunity to purchase the Thomas Amis Farm from her distant cousin and jumped at the chance. Thomas Amis was Wendy's 5th Great Grandfather and received the property as a Revolutionary War Land Grant for his military service. He selected this site on Big Creek where Old Stage Road (the original road from Philadelphia to the frontier) ended on the edge of the wilderness. Here he built a stone dam, mill, stone home, forge, foundry, blacksmith shop, tannery, boot and harness shop, store and distillery. The Jacobs are putting it back piece by piece. The first step was to build and open Amis Mill Eatery a family restaurant overlooking Big Creek Dam and water falls. The grounds have been reclaimed and offer walking trails along the creek and through the woods filled with birdhouses to the old family cemetery and home place grounds. Creekside cabin is a short walk or drive downstream from Amis Mill Eatery and the home place grounds.

What makes this cabin unique

Visitors comment that they feel they have stepped back in time to a more quiet, relaxed life and that's exactly what we want. Yet, we are in the heart of what's happening in Appalachia from Cherokee Lake to Bristol. The east Tn scenery is unparallelled and the history is fascinating.

Wonderful first visit to Tenessee

  • 5 of 5

The cabin we stayed in was perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed the wood burning fireplace and the larger soaker tub, especially after our hikes. Jake was very accommodating and told us about the area. The little eatery around the corner is friendly and has great atmosphere. We enjoyed a few appetizers and drinks after our hike. This is a good place to get Wi-fi as the cabin itself does not have any. We didn't mind. It was nice to be off the grid for a few days. Highly recommend the cabin and Bays Mountain and planetarium. They have great trails and a nature preserve.

Adorable Creek-Side Cabin!

  • 4 of 5

This property listing's description was accurate, and the cabin was just like the photos provided--a cool, cute and cozy cabin. Plenty of towels and wash cloths, toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish & dishwasher detergent, soap, so it was nice to not have to bring those items along or buy them after arrival. So great to have a washer and dryer!

The setting, in a lightly wooded area with a beautiful creek below, was beautiful. The property is part of a larger, historic parcel of land, and the information provided about the history was interesting. It wast quiet and private, yet was actually very close to everything you may need. The large porch overlooking the creek was nice. The location was central to several other areas we were visiting (Kingsport, Douglas Lake, Bays Mountain Park, Warrior's Path State Park, Briar Hill Farms, etc.), and served as our "home base".

The owner, Jake, was very pleasant and helpful, and quick to respond to emails and phone calls.

We ate at The Mill restaurant one night, also owned by the property owner, and it was packed with locals and visitors, and that, too, was a good experience. Good food and friendly service while overlooking the creek and the little dam and waterfall.

I would definitely recommend this to family and friends, not only for the great cabin, but also for nearby attractions, such as the Ebbing and Flowing stream, the dam and falls, the restaurant, the Thomas Amis house, and the proximity to all that Kingsport has to offer. Also nearby, in Gray, TN is the Natural History Museum, where an extremely important archaeological dig is ongoing.

The only negative comments are that the kitchen needs a cutting board, the floors of the cabin were not as clean as I would have wanted, and the sofa bed mattress is extremely uncomfortable, but children could probably manage it okay. Adding a railing in the loft would feel a bit safer, as would completing the railing on one end of the porch. But even with those few complaints, I STILL would highly recommend the place to friends and family! It is an adorable little cabin!
