Ocean view home in a half acre of gardens just a short walk from the beach

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,600 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Brand new 1600 sq ft tropical house with large deck and panoramic views

Mango Lodge is a secluded timber house with open-plan living and surrounded by nature. Inside the high ceilings, numerous doors and windows and open style gives the house a light and airy feel. Outside the huge roofed deck gives you space to relax or dine with a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea. The half-acre garden surrounds you with nature and gives you a feeling of being hidden away from the world. It also provides numerous fruits and flowers from mangoes to limes, heliconia to hibiscus.

But this is no isolated jungle cabin. A two minute walk through the garden brings you out in the centre of the Toucari bay-front where to your left you have the village with its bars, restaurants and kayak/paddle-board hire. A minute or two walking through the village and you are at the beach where you can relax or go snorkelling out to Toucari reef - one of the best sites on the island.

Mango Lodge has been rebuilt due to the damage caused by hurricane Maria last September. The new, stronger, brighter, elegant and charming timber cottage is now being finished and furnished now, and we have guests staying from December 2018 onwards.

The new Mango Lodge will sleep up to 6 guests in 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, ceiling fan and doors that open out onto the deck with views of the ocean (yes you can sit up in bed and gaze out to the Caribbean Sea). There is also an en-suite with wc and shower. The second bedroom has a queen-size bed, a private balcony facing the ocean, ceiling fan and views of the garden. The third bedroom has twin beds, a ceiling fan and views over the garden to the sea. There is also a stylish day-bed in the living area which allows for a seventh guest. All beds have quality mattresses, superior bedding and mosquito nets.

The spacious bathroom has an electric shower with instant hot water. The kitchen is large, simple and fully equipped with stove, fridge-freezer, coffee machine, toaster, dishwasher, washing machine and all the glassware, crockery and cookware you could need.

Many of the tourist sites promoted in Dominica are in the south (where the cruise ships dock). But here in the north-west we have lots of adventures which, though less advertised, are also less busy and just as spectacular. Fill your vacation with Cabrits National Park, Fort Shirley, the Indian River, Syndicate Trail, Milton Falls, Lapluy Falls, Lamothe River Falls, Cold Soufriere, Toucari Beach, Toucari reef snorkelling, Purple Turtle Beach, Rainforest horse-back riding, kayaking, paddle-boarding, sailing, and more.

About Andrew

I grew up in UK with careers in the Army and then in business.

Andrew purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Andrew chose Toucari

In 2008 we spent 6 weeks touring the island of Dominica trying to decide if it was the place to buy a holiday home and if so, where. Once we had found Toucari all doubts disappeared. Small, rural and with it's own beach, bay and snorkelling. A lifetime away from the hustle and bustle of the big towns and yet only a 10 minute drive to the commercial and social opportunities of Portsmouth. And of course Mango Lodge fit every criteria of a home to buy - Location (Dominica) Location (village with ocean views) Location (secluded among it's own gardens).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Had a lovely 10 day stay at mango lodge. It was just is nicely decorated and has everything there. No tv in the house is often a good sign for me...we were more than content just sitting on the terrace. 2 minutes to the beach where it is great to swim... for sunbathing and lounging on beach it's only a few minutes drive. We love fishing so it was ideal Locals were very friendly and sold us fish (when we didn't catch enough! Very peaceful holiday and definitely won't be the last here! Son(keyholder) was a mighty fine chap. His son Richardson, took us out on a boat do more fishing. Local guy Noah was very helpful and a real laugh. All in all an ideal place to stay if you are looking for a holiday away from the usual tourist rubbish then this is definitely a good place. Portsmouth has plenty going if you want though. Iguana cafe run by a lovely rastafarian couple was one of our favourites, although many other options for local food are available. Reggae night by the purple turtle was our one night out...and it was awesome! All in all, thanks very much and look forward to returning.

Woody and I just loved your cottage everything from the views to the rain fall to the smells of the forest and the sounds of the ocean. Thank you to Casu and Son for making our stay so wonderful as well. We will be back soon!

20 day stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2-1/2 weeks at this house. House is as depicted and well stocked. We found that for the most part in Dominica this is ultimately one of the best areas to stay. Its near the beach with access to restaurants and other activities and is a very safe area with friendly people. The care taker is very helpful and friendly. Dominica is an adventure for sure. Raw beauty in many respects with a challenging terrain. The driving there is another level and not for the faint of heart. Try NOT to arrive at night. Over all we loved our time there and this house or any of the houses Andy rents are a great place to stay during your time here on the "nature island"

Could live on this porch!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Mango Lodge! The house is adorable - the perfect size for a small family and well equipped (we were surprised to find a dishwasher, washer and so much vanity space in the bathroom). Carrying luggage down the steep stairs to get to the house was a bit tricky but well worth it for the privacy and those incredible views. Bring a flashlight and muscles. Make sure you request a demo of how to use the shower when checking in (a little tricky but works great).

I could absolutely live on this porch and fell asleep on each of the couches and the delightful hanging cocoon chair every single night we stayed. The view is AMAZING and we wished we would have had a few more days just to sit on that deck!!!!

The owners were FANTASTIC to work with! They easily accommodated all of our delayed arrivals and even went out of the way to make a discounted recommendation when our second leg house looked like it was going to fall through. We loved the fact that they took so much effort to introduce the neighbors that help with the check in process, cleaning and local tours and they also recommended ways we could help the area children. We always bring treats when we travel abroad but it is often an awkward process to figure out how to disseminate them to local kids in need. Our security deposit was refunded very quickly after our stay. The owners were also very responsive and very quick to reply to emails. Spices and a full grocery stock option would be pluses for travelers checking in late.

The edge of Toucari Bay could use a clean up as trash naturally collects from the ocean and in addition construction debris is falling down onto the beach from above. Derrick at Keepin' it Real said a clean up was planned in the next few days so this could be a non-issue. Keepin' it Real was DELICIOUS and was well worth the wait - fresh, yummy and great portions and strong rum punch combos.

If flying to Dominica the best advice I can give is trip insurance and maybe overnighting at a nearby island first and trying to fly in to Dominica early! We had several canceled and delayed flights that caused us to miss several days of our stay on the front end in addition to waiting at the airport 10 hours on our departure date and staying an additional night in San Juan, Puerto Rico on the back end.

We LOVED the people of Dominica and had a great adventure! Thank you Andrew for sharing your little slice of heaven with us! We adored Mango Lodge!

Mango Lodge we enjoyed the lodge, but not so much the area where it's situated

  • 4 of 5

There are many things we liked about the rental, our favourite being the huge deck, with two large, very comfortable sofas. We set up our laptop on the table there, and the internet connection was fast and never failed. Being covered, the porch is ideal even when it's pouring, but it's open enough that you don't feel closed in, and you have a great view of the surroundings... We like to hike and go to the beach, so we were gone most of the day, every day, and the terrace was a welcome spot to have dinner in the evening (very few, if any, mosquitoes).

The house itself is pleasant and well-appointed. The bed is very comfortable and the sheets of excellent quality. You don't need air conditioning as there are lots of windows with a lovely breeze coming through. The water pressure in the shower is good. We missed having a TV, but appreciated having a washing machine and dish washer. There is a long clothesline just outside the door, and clothes dry surprisingly quickly.

You can find good local fruits and vegetables from street vendors, and grilled chicken on Fridays, but the grocery stores are poorly stocked. Don't bother trying to find a decent bottle of wine anywhere.

The location was ok, but not great for our needs. There are a few areas you can walk to, you can even walk the 7 km. to Portsmouth (although there's a killer hill on the way) or you can catch a local bus in Toucari to take you to Portsmouth if you want to transfer to another bus and go on further. The bus routes are limited though, and the buses are few and far between, which makes getting around difficult and time-consuming. There are no nice beaches in the Toucari area, so if you like spending time at the beach, I would suggest renting in the Calibishie area on the north-east side of the island. Taxis here are very expensive, and even if you agree on a price beforehand, you might be in for a surprise. Know also that there's a departure tax when leaving the island, payable in cash only.

Owner's Response: It's lovely that Lisa and Christophe enjoyed their time at Mango Lodge. Thank you for such a positive review. Using local buses to get around is fun but not easy to reach all destinations so we always recommend a rental car. I have no idea what they didn't like about Tourari beach or the Toucari area. It can be seen from all our other reviews that guests love the area, meeting the locals, hanging out at the beach, drinking and eating at Keepin' it Real, swimming in the ocean and snorkeling on the reef. So I'm sorry if Lisa and Christophe didn't love it like so many others do.

Just what we needed

  • 5 of 5

Perfect house. We have rented many homes in the tropics, and this one was awesome and one of the best. Photos are perfect to base your decision on, the house is as cute and comfy as photos look. We lived on the massive deck on the very comfortable couches. We did not have a rental car but we walked everywhere. If you are walkers, this house is in a great location. And if you are wanting to explore some of the Waitukubuli National Trail, the location of this house is perfect. We walked to markets, restaurants, Portsmouth which is about 4 miles ... and we also used the public bus which is odd timing to figure out but actually works great.

Christmas in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent 10 days in Mango Lodge and celebrated Christmas on the island. The Lodge provides perfect accommodations while exploring the island. Simple, convenient, spacious for 5 of us. Our favorite hangout place is by far the deck - we played cards, ate breakfast there and took naps after days filled with activities.

But the VIEW is what should give this place and extra star. Gorgeous !!! I loved its location because it was less "touristy", there were usually very few people on the beach, in restaurants, on hiking routes.

We loved our jungle adventure. Caso the lodge keeper and his family - the nicest people, he took us to the falls and for a boat ride around Toucari bay. We brought some gifts for his kids and we are glad he did. They were very helpful and kind. They enjoyed our candy too :). He has 5 children and the youngest 3 girls are 14,11 and 5. Anything you will bring with You will make them happy!

Restaurants to visit: Iguana cafe (the best meal we had on the entire island - make sure to get the rum pancake for desert), Sisters restaurant, Keeping it Real down the road on the beach from our lodge (best lobster in town :), Hong Kong Chinese restaurant - saved our life being the only place open on a Christmas Day, food Shacks by Ross University in Picard, Champs Restaurant.

Be prepared to wait an hour or more for your meals - but it is worth it and we were not in a hurry being on an island vacation time :)

The ISLAND - the most beautiful island I have ever been to so far if you are an active family and the most affordably priced all throughout. Soooo much to do there!

A MUST SEE: BATIBOU BEACH! And eat lunch there too!

We have rented a car and saw all there is to see in Northern part of the island. Took a horse ride through the forest at Brandy Manor - fabulous adventure. We hiked with Caso to nearby falls through the rivers and lush of river forest - kids LOVED the hikes! We ate fresh fruit right off the tree on every trip. We drove down to Roseau and spent 3 hours in Screw's Sulfur SPA - difficult to find but what a relaxing afternoon! And again we were one of only 2 families there.

Do not bring fancy clothes or shoes. Not needed and it is not the type of vacation for that. There is mud, there is dirt, there are difficult rodes to conquer.....all the beauty of gorgeous true tropical island! So common out and enjoy!

So you may be tempted to sit on the deck all day and enjoy the beautiful view, watch the hummingbirds hover from flower to flower or check the sky for the broad-winged hawk or frigate bird. But we are surrounded by experiences and adventures. Within walking distance you can swim, snorkel, paddle-board, kayak, drink with the locals or eat lovely food on the beach. Our friend and neighbour will take you out for a leisurely boat trip to see the bat cave and snorkel on the WWI sunken wreck or to go fishing. He will also take you the 5 minute drive to one of two trails to two very different hidden waterfalls. Within a ten minute drive you can be at Cold Soufriere, a small area of bubbling mud in the centre of our drive-through volcano. Also just a ten minute drive is Cabrits National Park with Fort Shirley and some lovely forest walks to the ruins of a great British garrison, crumbling defenses with cannons still in place. And there is another great experience just 10 minutes away - the Indian River where you will be rowed up the mangrove edged river as Jonny Depp was in Pirates of the Caribbean. The list goes on, beach restaurants in Lagon, the islands biggest beach at Purple Turtle, bars, restaurants, the open fruit and veg market, massive tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi available straight from the fishing boat - all of this within a 15 minute drive or less.
