|Minimum Stay||6 nights|
You’ll feel like you’re vacationing inside the pages of DWELL magazine in this brand new three to four bedroom, 2 and a halfl bathroom lakefront house designed by a prominent Boston architect. Charming Kezar Lake, dotted with old farmhouses and inns, is a well-kept secret in the area. Old-fashioned Vernondale General Store, gorgeous Wadleigh State Park and non-profit Musterfield Farm, all just one mile from the house, are local insitutions. Golf, bike trails, and Sunapee Ski Resort nearby. Will show on weekends.
The home’s interior is open concept with elegant, modern finishes. From the screened-in porch you’ll enjoy total privacy as you listen to the hoots of our resident Great Horned Owl, the call of the loons, and the Italian-style bell chimes from the meetinghouse down the road. Gorgeous gardens! On the property is a private dock to which you can tie your own boat, or enjoy the tandem kayak. Relish the view from the wall of windows in the double-height living area as you prepare meals in the gourmet kitchen. The custom-built dining table seats nine. The huge tub in the ground-floor master bedroom has a view out to the woods. There is also a shower in the downstairs bathroom. Upstairs you will find a corner bedroom with bunk beds and a trundle, another bedroom with a queen bed, and a television room with a pullout queen sofa bed. The upstairs bathroom has its own large shower. There is also an outdoor shower, fire pit, WiFi and Smart TV. Just ninety minutes from Boston, fifteen from New London, fifteen to Sunapee, thirty to Hanover/Dartmouth. The only house rental on Kezar and the only modern rental in the region.
Warm weather activities at the house:
There is a shallow area with a sandy bottom right by the dock. The water is perfect for swimming, warmer than most lakes in the area. We also have a tandem kayak, for use at your own risk. A five to ten minute walk away is Wadleigh State Park, a very quiet place with a long though narrow beach area and a gorgeous wooded area in the back with a playground.
Warm weather activities in the area:
Biking on rails-to-trails, golf, zip-lining at Sunapee Ski Resort
Cornish and Hopkinton in August, Warner Fall Festival Columbus Day Weekend. The Sunapee Craft Fair is in July. Mt Sunapee’s Chocolate Fest is in October.
The Fells, Newbury
-The Fells belonged to John Hay (secretary to Lincoln and secretary of state to Teddy Roosevelt). They have many popular events, including concerts, Family Day, Fairy Tea and house tours. Fifteen minutes from the house.
Musterfield Farm, which is on the other side of the lake from us, holds many events, including Farm Days, with old-fashioned activities like making candles, walking on stilts, petting llamas, etc. It's a great place to visit at any time. Kids can pet the cows, look at the pigs, and select produce from the farm stand (which operates on an honor system). They also host Ice Day in January, when they cut ice blocks out of the lake just like in the movie Frozen.
Within half an hour are the Montshire Science Museum in Norwich, Vt, the Enfield Shaker Museum. Forty minutes will get you to VINS, the wonderful raptor center in Queeche. There is also an old mine, Ruggles Mine, in Danbury. And St Gaudens Resort in Cornish, the estate of the sculptor who crafted the Lincoln Memorial.
The New London Barn, ten to fifteen minutes away, boasts the oldest summer stock in the country.
The Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College (30 minutes away) has a top-notch collection. It’s also free and usually empty.
New London has some nice shops and restaurants, just fifteen minutes away. For more substantial town centers, head to:
Hanover, NH – Home to Dartmouth College, with a number of nice shops and cafes. There’s usually something happening here.
Woodstock, VT – The quintessential New England village. The Rockefellers poured money into this town, even providing funds so that telephone and electric lines could be buried in the ground. (So much prettier!) Many cute shops and restaurants, and the Billings Farm, which holds numerous events, including sleigh rides in winter.
At the house: Sleds are provided, for use at your own risk. It can also be fun to light the outdoor firepit in winter. On Kezar, many people go ice-fishing. Cross country ski trails and snow shoe trails run right by the house. There are maps at the house with suggested routes. Or you might try the rails-trails website
Sunapee Ski Resort – Sunapee has a surprising variety of terrain. It’s renowned for its grooming and ski school. Book ahead over busy periods for ski lessons, but be mindful of any cancellation policies.
Ragged Mountain Ski Resort
Ragged is smaller and further away than Sunapee, but can be fun if you’re looking to avoid crowds or get cheaper lift tickets.
The town of New London maintains a small ice skating rink in the center right next to the New London Inn. It’s free of charge. Skate rentals at the sports shop across the street.
