SURROUNDING AREA

Watauga Lake is the third cleanest lake in America with thirteen species of game fish, including rainbow and brown trout, walleye, and smallmouth and largemouth bass. In an area notorious for whitewater rafting, this 6400 acre lake is 19 miles long with 106 miles of shoreline. Serious kayakers can navigate class IV rapids on the Watauga River. Watauga Lake allows visitors to slow down and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Cherokee National Forest, where the Appalachian Blue Ridge Mountains meet the Smoky Mountains. Other popular activities on the lake include swimming, jet skiing, boating, sailing, water skiing and camping. Roan Creek, Elk River and Watauga River feed the lake. It offers access to the Appalachian Trail which crosses the Watauga Dam as well as many other hiking trails, and you will also find a wildlife observation area below the Watauga Dam.
