About this property

Traditional Hawai'i home near Hilo town - solar powered!

E komo mai (welcome!) to this 1940s plantation-era home in Hilo, the cultural center of Hawai’i. Here, you can hang loose and absorb the spirit of aloha while you explore the windward, tropical side of our island, including the Hamakua Coast and Volcano National Park. The house is located just minutes from famous sites, including Rainbow Falls, Pe'epe'e Falls, the Boiling Pots rapids, and Kaumana Cave (an extinct lava tube).

Outside, the expansive second floor lanai offers views of Hilo to the east and Mauna Kea peeking above the jungle treetops to the west. The house rests on a lovely palm-fringed half acre, populated by geckos, mongooses, mynah birds and others. Let the song of tree frogs send you to sleep, and roosters rouse you for another exciting day. Expect visits from the ubiquitous friendly green geckos. Enjoy preparing Hawaiian foods from Hilo's famous outdoor market in the spacious kitchen & outdoor grill, while your keiki (children) play ping-pong downstairs or explore the jungly yard.

Inside, the main living space is on the second floor, inviting gentle trade winds to flow. Four bedrooms, 2 full baths, eat-in kitchen, huge lanai, and living room are upstairs. Upstairs rooms are equipped with ceiling fans, but no A/C. Downstairs are rumpus room, extra half-bath, plus laundry and outdoor shower. Accommodates up to 7 adults (in regular beds) and 3 children (on inflatable mattress and floor futons).

The house is stocked with linens, and beach towels, games, and books about Hawaiian topics (travel, children’s books, novels, and local cookbooks). Downstairs is an enormous rumpus room with ping pong table and a Hawaiian motif stone mosaic floor original to the house. Also downstairs is an additional half bath, laundry facilities, and an outdoor shower. Mahalo for rinsing sandy toes after the beach!

Nightly rates are for up to 6 people ($50 additional charge for each additional person). 5% discount for stays of 7+ nights, and 20% discount applies to stays of 30+ nights!

This home is located just 3 miles from Hilo’s museums and restaurants and 4-5 miles from Hilo’s airport and best snorkeling, at Richardson’s Beach. Not to be missed is a trip to Mauna Kea’s Visitor Center for night stargazing (free, open until 10pm nightly), just 30 miles away. It is also an easy 25-mile drive for a convenient day trip to Volcano National Park. On another day, take a leisurely drive north on the Hamakua Coast to visit the amazing Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden (9 miles), or the historic sugar industry towns of Honomu (13 miles) and Honoka’a (43 miles). Take the Saddle Road across the island’s center 75 miles to reach Kona’s airport and leeward beaches.

Fantastic Property ..
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The play was exactly as the listing described .. almost better. So much space and great layout for a larger group/family.

Big house!
Very big house. (But old. Needs renovating.) However you get all the commodities you need! Close to downtown Hilo. 2 good bathrooms. I would suggest to renovate/decorate the play room in the basement. (Would create another good living area.) I would also add good curtains in the bedrooms so people can sleep longer (without sunlight)

Great Hilo stay for a large family group.
What a great property! We stayed in the bungalow with a group of 4 adults and 6 kids, and it was such a comfortable, wonderful stay! Our kids LOVED the treehouse in the backyard, and the ping-pong, and it was so nice to have access to beach toys and extra beach towels. We found that the beds were firm and comfortable, and we slept well with the sound of rain on the roof, and frogs and birds right outside of the window. Temperature-wise, the fans and open screened windows were enough to keep us cool at night. The kitchen was well-stocked, and it was great to be able to eat right outside on the deck, looking out to the tropical trees and plants. The house has a quirky, lived-in feel, and is definitely not “new and shiny,” but it was clean, and as families with kids, we appreciated the warm and comfortable environment. We’re so grateful to have been able to stay here during our time in Hilo!

This was a typical traditional Hilo home. It reminded me of my grandparent's house. It was very clean and had an ample supply of towels and blankets (it can get cold). The property was close to the center of town (5 minutes) but tucked away in the cool, foresty hillside. The grounds were lovely and the tangerines from the tree were juicy and sweet. We used this as a hub for our fishing and golfing activities and ate out most of the time. We bought poke and spent a nice lunch time on the deck. It was a perfect getaway from Honolulu.

Our family of three has roots in Cuba, and we deeply appreciate the welcome we have received in our adopted island home of Hawai’i.

Why they chose this property

This 1940s house is perfect if you want to avoid the tourist crowds, soak up the laid back "Old Hawai'i" lifestyle, meet island creatures up close and personal, and explore the windward side of Hawaii Island and Volcanoes National Park. This property is NOT for visitors who (1) prefer a hotel "wakeup" call to roosters crowing or (2) prefer mainland-style amenities like frigid A/C instead of ceiling fans and soft trade wind breezes; or (3) mind seeing other island residents like a gecko clinging to a window screen or scooting across the floor.

What makes this property unique

We have provided Hawai'i travel guides, novels and children's books, as well as a collection of local cookbooks. Why not try a Hawaiian recipe using locally grown taro, lychee or papaya? For ingredients, visit the famous farmer's market in downtown Hilo any day. Full market days (with crafts in addition to foods) are Wednesdays and Saturdays.
