When I first visited Stowe, I felt as if I were in a winter wonderland.
I vowed to go back as many times as possible in the winter without realising that Stowe is actually an all year round location particularly suited to all sports whether winter sports or hiking, bike riding, walking, tennis, golf etc. Apart from the Winter season there is the infamous Fall and the Summer is beautiful too. Go visit Lake Champlain in the Summer and take a boat across to New York State. You are also near the Canadian border with Montreal being the closest part of Canada to Stowe, about an hour and a half car ride away.
This house is actually in the centre of the Village of Stowe where you can take a leisurely stroll to enjoy the many features typical of a New England village which is well serviced with beautiful restaurants as well as other facilities along the Mountain Road ( a shuttle bus is available from the Village along the Mountain Road to Mount Mansfield for skiing if you dont have a car with you). The property has 2 bedrooms but is currently being adapted with the basement being finished to provide yet another twin bedroom, shower room, utility room and den with seating and flat screen tv. This will be ready for the Fall and Winter seasons. The Master Bedroom is en suite with a large dressing room also.
Stowe is a truly remarkable place, became home to the Trapp family from the Sound of Music, is home to the original Ben and Jerry's nearby and has its own ghost, Emily, after which a covered bridge is named. The ski trails are fantastic and in the Summer, are a treat to walk for the amazing views.
The Green Mountain Inn along the road from this property is a quintissential New England Inn where the Whip Bar and Grill serves some beautiful food or you could just pop along for a cocktail in the bar. You must try their Brunch and Bloody Mary's at weekends. If you prefer to cater for yourselves, there are several grocery stores in the village and because its America, almost every restaurant caters for take out service too. The food/deli store Harvest Market is a must for take out prepared food and high quality deli ingredients.
Of course the property itself has a very large porch where you can sit on the comfortable porch furniture during the summer and barbeque or in the winter to just view the snowy surrounds. The land opposite is a nature reserve but beyond that are tennis courts and a newly refurbished ice rink. What more could you want from a property for the price of a room in a local hotel, where every need is catered for, even for the reader, my favourite book shop, Bear Pond Books.
If you're looking for a spa with pool and beauty and relaxation treatments, we often use the Topnotch resort along the Mountain Road. There is even an outdoor heated pool with views of Mount Mansfield and fire pits lit around the pool during the evening.
A couple of reviews from this year are as follows:
" Secluded in the heart of the village. What a great location! A few short steps away from the village and yet sitting on the deck you feel like you are on the back roads. This unit is very clean and very well appointed."
"Beautiful Home. We really enjoyed our extended stay in this home. We rented it for 6 months. The layout of the house is fantastic, especially the large master suite with walk in closet and private bath. What was also great was the location -- easy and quick walk to restaurants and shops in Stowe. House is well appointed and included everything we needed. Thanks!"
