About Sally Colwell

I was born and raised in Maryland, right outside Washington DC, and studied environmental science at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. I came to Hawaii to work on an organic farm for the summer and couldn't bear to leave, and have been here for eight years now. My husband, Allan, grew up here and has a deep connection to the island. He is carpenter, landscaper, fisherman, and general jack-of-all-trades. We live in the caretaker house (with a separate yard and driveway) on the property with our two daughters.

Stunning, spacious home with wonderful caretakers!

  • 5 of 5

My annual work trip to the Big Island was truly a success in part to our stay at Red Gate. My crew and I were able to rest peacefully after long days of work. The kitchen was gorgeous and well stocked, the dining room and living room were beautiful for large groups, the bedrooms were quiet, clean and comfortable. Wonderful plantation home with window screens throughout that allowed for cool breezes at night after long warm days. Loved the morning breakfast nook too! Listening to tropical birds and frogs and chickens while you have some toast is the best.

The grounds are also stunning. Sally and her family are so generous and accommodating to anything we needed while also dropping off fresh eggs from their chickens and apple bananas before our long shoot days! We will most certainly be back!

Treated like a true guest in paradise

  • 5 of 5

Sally, Allen and their children were wonderful, sharing hosts. No detail was spared: well-equipped kitchen, nice bathrooms (w/plush towels) and comfortable bedrooms with deluxe linens. This home is very child-friendly and the many beach accessories were useful to adults as well. The ample yard, as well as the house, was impeccably maintained and we were treated to fruit from the various trees. We enjoyed several of the restaurants close by, and exploring the town of Kainaliu, within walking distance. We are already thinking of coming back for a longer stay.

Nearly perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 nights with our adult children in this charming house. It had everything we needed and more. The house is comfortable, well decorated in welcoming colors and furnishings and easy to relax in. Our favorite parts were the big front porch with stylish and relaxing seating, the beautiful and lush huge garden and the chickens and bunnies out back. The only drawback is the road noise during 'rush' hour but even that can't dampen our enthusiasm for Redgate and the host family, Sally and Allan. Also it was handy to walk to a coffee plantation, a church, a small grocery store and some restaurants. It truly was a moment in paradise for us.

Beautiful building with everything we needed. Be aware it abuts the highway. I recommend it.

Wonderful place to hang out. Great kitchen, too. The outdoor shower is a huge plus. Thank you for the fruit and eggs -a treat!

Host was very helpful, responsive, and easy to work with.

The highway can be noisy, but mostly during rush hours.

Great place to base for south Kona activities.

A beautiful, authentic Hawaiian cottage

  • 5 of 5

We just spent an amazing week on the Big Island for spring break and to celebrate our twins' upcoming high school graduation. Red Gate was our home base, and it had everything we needed. The house was impeccably clean with updated bathrooms and amenities including a washer, dryer, and dishwasher. We left the screened windows open all week and were very comfortable, even as the daytime temperatures reached the upper 80s. Ceiling fans in all of the rooms kept the air moving and the house very comfortable. We especially enjoyed sitting out on the Lanai in the morning with our 100% Kona coffee and in the evening with an adult beverage. The gardens and yard were amazing, beautiful, and well-maintained by Sally and Allen. We heard and saw a number of birds, spotted a mongoose taking a drink from the birdbaths, and were entertained by various lizards that roamed the gardens. Early evening was filled with the sounds of frogs or lizards or some critters singing until bedtime.

We took advantage of the snorkeling and beach gear (towels, chairs, mats, beach shoes, etc.) provided with the home. We used the coolers for packed lunches most days as we explored the island. We spent our days traveling to the beaches along the west coast, took a horseback trip to Waipio Valley, hiked to the green sand beach in South Point, hiked down to the black sand beach at Pololu, spent a wonderful dusk and evening at the Visitor's Center at Mauna Kea exploring the stars through the telescopes, traveled up and down Chain of Craters road in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, saw the glow of the caldera in the evening, went whale watching with Capt. Dan McSweeney, enjoyed the Hawaiian Botanical Gardens, and toured the Hula Daddy Coffee Plantation. A full week!

Red Gate is very close to everything you will need to make your visit great. Ten minutes to the grocery store and other shopping. Kailua-Kona is a short drive to the north with the airport not far beyond. We would recommend Red Gate for your next trip to Hawaii. Its history, charm, and beauty will wrap itself around you and make you feel like an island native.
