I was born and raised in Maryland, right outside Washington DC, and studied environmental science at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. I came to Hawaii to work on an organic farm for the summer and couldn't bear to leave, and have been here for eight years now. My husband, Allan, grew up here and has a deep connection to the island. He is carpenter, landscaper, fisherman, and general jack-of-all-trades. We live in the caretaker house (with a separate yard and driveway) on the property with our two daughters.
Sally Colwell purchased this bungalow in 2014

Mahalo nui loa to Sally & Allen . We had a wonderful time in Red Gate. Thank you very much for your hospitality, kindness and helpfulness. We had everything we need and more... The house is very luxurious, the garden is full of beautiful flowers, trees and tropical fruits. And it was amazing to listen to the cookie frogs and tropical birds. The best concert I ever had! Greetings to Andy & Paddyfoot. Mahalo nui loa for everything <3
My annual work trip to the Big Island was truly a success in part to our stay at Red Gate. My crew and I were able to rest peacefully after long days of work. The kitchen was gorgeous and well stocked, the dining room and living room were beautiful for large groups, the bedrooms were quiet, clean and comfortable. Wonderful plantation home with window screens throughout that allowed for cool breezes at night after long warm days. Loved the morning breakfast nook too! Listening to tropical birds and frogs and chickens while you have some toast is the best.
The grounds are also stunning. Sally and her family are so generous and accommodating to anything we needed while also dropping off fresh eggs from their chickens and apple bananas before our long shoot days! We will most certainly be back!
Sally, Allen and their children were wonderful, sharing hosts. No detail was spared: well-equipped kitchen, nice bathrooms (w/plush towels) and comfortable bedrooms with deluxe linens. This home is very child-friendly and the many beach accessories were useful to adults as well. The ample yard, as well as the house, was impeccably maintained and we were treated to fruit from the various trees. We enjoyed several of the restaurants close by, and exploring the town of Kainaliu, within walking distance. We are already thinking of coming back for a longer stay.
We stayed for 5 nights with our adult children in this charming house. It had everything we needed and more. The house is comfortable, well decorated in welcoming colors and furnishings and easy to relax in. Our favorite parts were the big front porch with stylish and relaxing seating, the beautiful and lush huge garden and the chickens and bunnies out back. The only drawback is the road noise during 'rush' hour but even that can't dampen our enthusiasm for Redgate and the host family, Sally and Allan. Also it was handy to walk to a coffee plantation, a church, a small grocery store and some restaurants. It truly was a moment in paradise for us.
Wonderful place to hang out. Great kitchen, too. The outdoor shower is a huge plus. Thank you for the fruit and eggs -a treat!
Host was very helpful, responsive, and easy to work with.
The highway can be noisy, but mostly during rush hours.
Great place to base for south Kona activities.
Truly relaxing experience. Sally and her family were wonderful hosts and the rental home is in such a tranquil environment. Very clean, well maintained. Close to many wonderful attractions. We hope to come back soon.
