About this property

Sandy Beach Retreat - stay just steps from Juneau's best beach and trails!

Guests will enjoy this private, 1-bedroom apartment nestled in a nature-lovers paradise above Sandy Beach in Douglas, Alaska. The apartment is the entire first floor of a quintessential Alaskan log home with a private entrance, windows all around, an open floor plan, and all custom interior wood and rock work.

Enjoy the sounds of nature from the private deck with a view of Mount Roberts tram and Gastineau Channel’s glorious mountains and waterfalls. You can walk right off the deck to our private stairway access to Treadwell Historic trail and Sandy Beach, with sandy beach playground just a quick 5 minute walk down the trail. For those wanting to gain some elevation on a longer hiking adventure, Mount Jumbo trail is just around the corner, a 5 minute walk to the trailhead. And while downtown Juneau is just a 10 minute drive in a private vehicle, you can also enjoy the convenience of public transportation, with buses running every 30 minutes from the stop located just a block away.

The apartment has a lovely pillow-top queen-sized bed in a separate private bedroom.

When hungry, enjoy the ease of preparing food in the fully equipped kitchen or on the bbq, or take a short scenic walk to have a meal at the Douglas café or Island Pub, where they make amazing pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven. Other amenities such as a full-size washer/dryer, wifi, flat screen tv, ample library, and private parking will also make your stay comfortable. Your own private deck is a nature-lovers dream! The deck has mountain and peek-a-boo water views, a babbling creek running by, and overlooks a lovely nature trail. We have strong unlimited internet, so you should have no problems connecting to share your adventures with friends!

Sorry, no pets or smoking on the property.

Note: Our family of four (2 kids) lives in the house above the rental. Although we are very respectful of our tenants with regard to noise, and our location is very serene most of the time, tenants should expect a bit of mild family sounds here and there during normal waking hours (7a-10p), especially during transition times when we are packing off to work/camp. Quiet hours are 10p-7a. If you like to party late and/or sleep in until mid-morning, other accommodation options may better suite your needs. Please feel free to inquire if any questions!

Nice rustic Juneau habitat
Overall, a nice place for people in good health. The driveway is very steep, the toilet and bathtub have steps to get up to them. The place has a dark wood finish and minimal lighting. That said, this was a warm, tidy, and otherwise comfortable apartment. It is below the owner's house which is busy with children and a dog, but they were friendly and helpful. The porch is covered and has an outdoor grill and a gaslit table that is very nice to sit around in the evening. It is at the end of the road on Douglas Island so is quiet and woodsy. Overall quite nice, but it would be challenging for anyone with bad hips or knees. Overall, a good value for us.

Enjoyable Stay!!
We really enjoyed our time at this location. Our only ask would be to have a box of Kleenex available but other than that, the place was great!!

Great Location - Beautiful Home
Tremendous owner, excellent communication. Home was well laid out and in a perfect location. Easy walk to the beach, Shakespeare in the park. Back deck was peaceful and was enjoyable with the propane fire pit Would certainly stay here again! 🙂

Great location for walks on beach or trail
10 days. Very clean. Well stocked. Appreciated the olive oil and balsamic vinegar! I had a couple small issues which she addressed promptly. I would stay again.

Trip of a lifetime
We loved this vrbo. It is in Douglas away from the cruise ship tourists. We immensely enjoyed the historical site literally in the backyard of this vrbo. The historic treadmill mine has placards up around the area and the remnants of the mine are clearly visible all over the area. It was fascinating. The beach is a quick walk through the woods and the old mine site. The steps to the beach might be dangerous for those not sure footed but the beach is a quick drive. Our stay could not have been better.

Karin and Sanjay live in the upstairs portion of the house with their two children. They strive not to intrude on the privacy of their guests, yet are easily reached should their assistance be needed.

Why they chose this property

We have lived in Juneau since 2005, and are happy to share our local knowledge of the area. We love the location of our property "at the end of the road" on Douglas. The house is unique in that it is one of the few log homes in Juneau, the logs for which were pulled from the adjacent forest. The property is nestled at the rainforest edge above Sandy Beach and the historic Treadwell townsite and trails, and right around the corner from the Mt. Jumbo trailhead. We are a very quiet location away from the hustle, but still just a short walk to downtown Douglas and a 10 minute drive to downtown Juneau. And while our location has a lovely nestled-in-nature feel, it is fully equipped with everything you might need, including wifi, full kitchen and washer/dryer.

What makes this property unique

This home has uniquely easy access to some of the most stunning walks and hikes in Juneau. There are private stairs leading from the yard directly down to Treadwell trail, and you can be at the best beach in Juneau in just a couple minutes! You can sit in the apartment or on the deck looking at the mountains and listening to the adjacent babbling brooks while watching the eagles soar or the cruise ships slide by. Mt. Jumbo trailhead is a quick 5 minute walk away, and there is great hiking or trail running opportunities along the Treadwell Ditch trail. If you you want to be nestled in nature, but close to the action, this is your spot!
