About Rick

Rick Dyer is an inventor. Probably best known as the creator of the hit video game 'Dragon’s Lair'.

Dyer is a licensed REALTOR® and Licensed Real Estate Agent. Rick is a twenty (25) year resident in Julian, California; and considers it a great privilege to live in such a beautiful place...

I live in Julian to unwind, relieve stress and center myself. Our family fell in love with the peace and tranquility of the Mountains, the magnificent location and coziness of our house. For me, it is a magical place, and I love it as much as the first time I discovered Julian.

When I travel up the mountain from San Diego, only a 60 minute drive or so, I can physically feel the layers of stress peel off. By the time I get there I am already in a renewed and relaxed state. Most noticeable is the lack of traffic and sirens, just the quiet sounds of nature. I love the four seasons, each for their own unique character. I originally thought this was a winter resort, but actually it is popular all seasons, and especially summer with Lake Cuyamaca only nine minutes away. Coleman Creek Log Cabin is located on a private lane, surrounded by trees and spectacular Mountain views. I enjoy relaxing by taking in the Mountains, valley, the changing cloud formations in the distance, listening to birds and the wind blowing through the pine trees.

Rick purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Rick chose Julian

Great location, great views, one minute walk to the Julian Township!

CHRISTMAS comes to Julian every year in an old-fashioned way-like a Norman Rockwell painting which reflects small-town American life and brings the spirit of the holidays to heart. Holiday time in Julian gets closer to that dream than most spots in Southern California where you'll feel a nip in the fresh mountain air, stroll through a quaint, festive town, and maybe catch a glimpse of snow capped mountains.

The holiday season in Julian also offers an opportunity to shop at small boutiques and craft shows, without crowds or lines, for one-of-a-kind gifts. From antiques and collectibles to jewelry and home décor to old fashioned candy and treats, Julian offers a wide variety of unique treasures to discover.

You can greet Santa a couple of times during the season, indulge in a Victorian Christmas tea, sing carols with costumed holiday carolers, sip a cup of hot chocolate or spiced cider. And you can watch the annual Living Nativity scene, cuddle under a blanket while riding down Main Street in a carriage, stay in a cozy bed & breakfast that's all decked out in holiday finery, or even stroll down a quiet country lane.

You can enjoy Julian's holiday ambiance through early January.

What makes this cabin unique

According to C. A. Weslager, whose book on log cabins is considered a classic, the Finns had a 'close attunement' with the forests, and both groups had well-developed forest industries.[5] Weslager goes on to say:

The Finns were accomplished in building several forms of log housing, having different methods of corner timbering, and they utilized both round and hewn logs. Their log building had undergone an evolutionary process from the crude 'pirtti'...a small gabled-roof cabin of round logs with an opening in the roof to vent smoke, to more sophisticated squared logs with interlocking double-notch joints, the timber extending beyond the corners. Log saunas or bathhouses of this type are still found in rural Finland.

By stacking tree trunks one on top of another and overlapping the logs at the corners, people made the 'log cabin'. They developed interlocking corners by notching the logs at the ends, resulting in strong structures that were easier to make weather-tight by inserting moss or other soft material into the joints. As the original coniferous forest extended over the coldest parts of the world, there was a prime need to keep these houses warm. The insulating properties of the solid wood were a great advantage over a timber frame construction covered with animal skins, felt, boards or shingles. Over the decades, increasingly complex joints were developed to ensure more weather tight joints between the logs, but the profiles were still largely based on the round log.

Unforgettable experience!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 nights at the Coleman Cabin to celebrate my husband’s birthday and we had an absolutely incredible time! The location could not be better (just a few steps from Julian’s main street)…it’s a peaceful place with beautiful views! The cabin was spotless and fully equipped. So romantic and cozy! The jet tub and spa are definitely a must try! My husband loved the grill which was clean and ready to go! Maria welcomed us with a big smile on our arrival day and gave us a tour around the cabin. She was so very kind. Some of our experiences include: shopping in town, vising the local museum, exploring a gold mine, visiting a winery, and even taking an overland desert tour, which ended up being an amazing adventure! There is so much to do and enjoy in this town. The Coleman Cabin is the perfect place to relax and escape! We can’t wait to plan our next trip!

Amazing property. Outstanding location. Great property management.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the Coleman Creek cabin and it was just as fantastic as it was the first time. It was an anniversary trip so I asked for a favor from Maria to help me surprise my wife with flowers in the cabin when we checked in. She went well above and beyond for me and made our trip amazing. Online check in was a breeze. Check out is made super easy. Our deposit was refunded to us almost immediately after check out. Place was very clean and still felt very new. We used the spa and the grill outside and both worked fantastic. The location of the property can’t get much better. Within walking distance of anywhere in the town, yet set back from the road so u still feel like you are in the woods. We took a drive to Lake Cuyamaca and also hiked Stonewall Peak. All just a short scenic drive away. I’m positive we will be back to stay here again. The owners and property managers are an absolute pleasure to work with. THE place to stay in Julian for us!

Absolutely loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We were planning a short get away from San Diego to Julian. How lucky we were, to have found the Coleman Creek Cottage!

It is a cozy/rustic, very private, 1 bedroom, 1 bath, log cabin within 5 minutes walking distance from town.

The cabin is totally updated, complete with a claw-foot bath tub and enclosed shower. WiFi, TV, DVD/Blu-Ray, air conditioned, and a cozy flame burning stove heater. The cabin was stocked with all the basic cooking/baking needs along with all the utensils, including the all important "wine & bottle openers". There is a exhilarating hot tub just steps from the porch of the cabin and a BBQ grill if you'd like to cook out. The queen size bed was extremely comfortable.

The property management team was very friendly and helpful. A special "thank you" to Maria!

Brochures were in the cabin showing local attractions, restaurants, hiking, etc... We took a carriage ride through the country where we spotted deer and turkey.

The only regret we have, is that we only stayed there for two nights. We will definitely return, and we have already recommended the Coleman Creek Cabin to several friends.

Charming cabin with everything you need. Loved being so close to town yet felt secluded. Outstanding

  • 5 of 5

From the beautiful porch to the rustic interior there are many reasons this cabin has it all. First night we bbq burgers and soaked in the hot tub and stargazed. Walked the town of Julian and hiked to Stonewall Peak but just relaxing on the porch was my favorite activity. Everything about the cabin was terrific, clean, easy to use amenities, and all in working order. Fantastic stay!

Location

Julian is a small mountain community in Southern California located at the intersection of California highways 78 and 79, about 50 miles northeast of San Diego. This historic gold-mining town is nestled among oak and pine forests between the north end of the Cuyamaca Range and the south slope of Volcan Mountain.

The entire township of Julian is a Designated Historical District. Its image as an early California frontier town with pioneer store fronts, historic sites and guided tours of Eagle and High Peak Mines accounts for much of its modern appeal. Tourism is Julian's largest industry, followed by cattle raising.

Julian is also unique among Southern California communities for its cold-winter climate, ideal for growing apples. All Julian apples are sold locally as apple pies, apple cider or whole fruit. In October, 10,000 apple pies a week are baked in Julian, when Southern California tourists flock here for the fall colors, cool breezes, frontier atmosphere and its famous Apple Festival.

Julian began as a California mining camp when A.E. (Fred) Coleman discovered placer gold at Coleman Creek in 1869. Drue Bailey founded Julian City in 1870, naming it after his cousin Mike Julian. Bailey and Julian were cousins and ex-confederate soldiers who had left Georgia after the Civil War for the California gold fields.

By the summer of 1872, there were 50 houses, 3 hotels, 4 stores, 2 restaurants, 1 schoolhouse and the "usual number of saloons" to service an an estimated 300 miners working in the area. Numerous hard rock mines were established in 1879 in the Julian and Banner area yielded an estimated $4 to $5 million dollars in gold ore.

Unlike other such camps, Julian survived after the mines played out because of its climate, rich soil and proximity to San Diego. Julian's first newspaper, The Julian Sentinel, began publishing in 1887. Since James Madison first brought the first apple trees to Julian in the early 1870s, Julian apples have won many blue ribbons at places like the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, the St. Louis Fair and the San Francisco World's Fair of 1915. The first Julian apple celebration was held in 1909 , but wasn't followed by another until 1949.

WEATHER / CLIMATE

Julian has four moderate but distinct seasons with average annual precipitation of 30 inches. Cool springs and falls contrast with hot days and cool nights during summer and occasional winter snowfall from December to March. Various climates, from desert to high mountains, exist within 25 miles of Julian.
