No, we don't make maple syrup here! But, the principal of a sugar house gave me the idea for this design. This house is a custom cape with a real 10' cupola in the center of the roof providing natural light on a stairway leading to the upper level. This four bedroom, two and one half bath custom built home makes a perfect get-a-way with a comfortable, inviting interior. The main open floor plan, with its hemlock beams, offers loads of room to cook a favorite meal or quietly hideout with a good book. You might sit on the back porch and enjoy a 20 mile view of Vermont or take a quiet walk in the woods to the spring-fed brook and water garden.
I had this house built starting in the mid-90's by two local carpenters. The trees on my property were cut and used for the rough framing lumber and the hemlock beams you see inside. This was a design I adapted to suite my desires and needs. So now this house has become my retirement home and since I do a good bit of traveling, I thought I might share this place with others.
Joe Mercaldi purchased this house in 1999
The town of Heath is nestled on the eastern side of the Berkshires tucked up against the Vermont state line. It is quiet, picturesque and home to 700 hearty soules.
This 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath custom built home (built 1999) is the perfect get-a-way. You might be in the woods but the whole-house generator will keep the lights going no matter what the weather. But, don't let this description fool you into thinking there is nothing to see or do.
Berkshire East Resort is a short 15 minute drive to year-round activities: Winter skiing, snowboarding and tubing or summer fun including a mountain coaster, mountain biking, zip-line, and white water rafting. Kayaking, fishing and hiking is all close by.
Do you like museums? Within 1 hrs. you can drive to the Clark Museum (Williamstown, MA), the Smith College (Northhampton, MA), Amherst College and the University of Mass.(Amherst, MA) museums.
How about seeing the town where several major motion pictures were filmed - Labor Day (2014) and The Judge (2014). Shelburne Falls is a short 15 minute trip back in time. This interesting little town has great restaurants, the historic Bridge of Flowers, the glacial pot holes and shopping. Did I mention shopping and Yankee Candle's flagship store (South Deerfield, MA), Kringle Candle (Bernardston, MA)?
The American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr summered in Heath and delivered the Senerity Prayer at the Union Church for the first time in the summer of 1943.
The HEATH house was fantastic !!!!!! The sleeping arrangements were perfect ! And between the fireplace. views from the house, amenities offered, OUR VACATION COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER !!!! When it rained all day, spending the day inside was fantastic !
Clean, quiet, beautiful location, had everything we needed, near good hiking
trails, gracious and helpful owners.
We met Joe upon arrival for a tour of the house. The posted pictures we saw online met every expectation of Joe's home. Our kids (15 and 11) were amazed at how quiet the "neighborhood" was! The kitchen had every pot and pan I'd ever need. The closest "real" supermarket is about 30 minutes away, so we stocked the fridge! I made breakfast every morning. At the start the internet connection was a bit off, but as Joe instructed to reset the server, we had no further issue once we did that a few times. Our kids had their choice for bedrooms; it was a bit more house than we needed, however, the beauty of the home and its surroundings did not hold me back from booking. We are already thinking of our next visit and bringing friends! Although we are from Massachusetts, we felt like we were up north because of the "mountain feel" of the location. We can only imagine how amazing the fall is here!
I scheduled a Berkshire East white water rafting trip, which is 15-20 minutes away from the house. It was expertly run and we'll patronize them in the future. There are more activities to do at Berkshire East. We can see ourselves spending the day there on our next visit.
Thank you, Joe, for the great stay!
We had a lovely stay in an amazing home. Joe met us and showed us,around and made us feel very welcome. We had a question after one day Joe addressed our concerns immediately the house was clean and everything you needed was there. And the view and peace and quiet was so needed
This house was perfect for us- two families with four younger children total. Two large bedrooms on top floor that share a bathroom and on lower level there are two additional bedrooms and a living room with additional sleeping capacity that share another bathroom. Living area and kitchen with half bath on main floor. The adults took the top floor while the kids were on the bottom floor- was great to have our own space! Joe was amazing and a very gracious host. He was extremely accommodating when I had to change booking dates after travel arrangements changed. Beautiful house, great scenery- thank you Joe!
This home was the perfect location for many activities in the area. The house was beautiful, clean, roomy and very comfortable. The owner, Joe, met us when we arrived and gave us a brief overview of the home. He was very nice and pleasant to work with! Highly recommend this great home. Thanks for sharing your home, Joe!
