About jason trochessett

I read an article about the Canadian Rockies in National Geographic nearly 40 years ago and began a quest to one day have a ranch in the most beautiful place in North America. Now it's a dream come true for friends from all over the world. When not being rented it's frequently used to raise money at auction for charities to help people in need and conservation organizations. I'm an avid fly fisherman and conservationist who believes in protecting wild and beautiful places such as the Elk River Valley in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

jason trochessett purchased this lodge in 2002

Why jason trochessett chose Sparwood

The fishing, abundance and diversity of wildlife, scenery and setting on a historic ranch in the heart of the Canadian Rockies creates memories that last a lifetime. The dry fly fishing for wild cutthroat trout is world class and truly rare. The herds of elk that graze across the meadows is something most would only expect to see inside a national park, with crowds of people watching, but here we have it all to ourselves. The historic ranch provides a feeling of going back to a simpler place and time, clears the mind from distractions and stress of modern life and brings families and friends closer together.

What makes this lodge unique

Elk River Lodge is the only place to stay directly on the Elk River offering privacy and countless miles of fishing, hiking, riding, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing…Other accommodations are either not on the Elk River or they're in crowded areas that feel as though they could be in any city or ski resort.

Best place we’ve ever stayed!

  • 5 of 5

We want to start by saying, we have been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit and this is by far the nicest place we have EVER been. This is far more than an accommodation, it is an experience. If you are looking for something to really show you the lifestyle and surroundings of Fernie, you’ve come to the right place. The ranch itself is one of a kind with custom built beautiful furniture and the interior is well cared for and maintained. It offers beautiful spanning views from the breakfast bar, and the ultimate peaceful setting from the hot tub! The 6 bedrooms are incredible, very beautiful and give you a true wilderness vacation. The true experience part of staying here is all of the wildlife that come through the back pasture. It was unreal to see the animals so close, yet in their natural habitat. It is so relaxing here, we can’t paint the picture enough.

Jason the owner, and Bill the property manager are both extremely easy to get along with and very accommodating. We loved dealing with both of them!

It is truly one of a kind location, which is why we have decided to come back for our honeymoon! The Romance this place puts off is extremely special! The place is also large enough to bring a few special guests with us to thank them for the wedding help, and we are looking forward to not only thanking them with a fun accommodation, but a truly unique experience that they will also remember for the rest of their lives.

We would recommend this 90 acre ranch for anyone looking to unwind, experience the true outdoors, a romantic getaway, a family reunion, or anyone looking to make memories that will last a life time. We cannot say enough about it.

Can’t wait to go back for the honeymoon next year!!!! Thank you Bill and Jason!

Owner's Response: The wildlife that surrounds our property is truly something special and very rare...something most people never see even in a national park. To see a few elk with a bunch of cars on the side of the road is one thing. To see herds in their natural habitat grazing across the meadow each day is something else, a daily occurrence in our's the most beautiful thing most people ever see...especially in the comfort, privacy and history of a lodge thats been there since native people still roamed free... Not to mention the incredible dry fly fishing and world class skiing!!! Thank you Michelle for capturing the unique experience of our lodge so well.

Owner's Response: Being able to stand in our meadows, with mountains all around, river and spring creeks flowing by, and not another home or building in see herds of elk, deer and more wildlife on a daily feel like you're stepping back in time due to the historic feel of the lodge and barn, while still having the best comforts of home...a crackling fire, exquisite beds, views from every said it best Lachlan, words cannot describe it. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Another Relaxing Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth year staying here and we love it more each time. The relaxing atmosphere and cozy dwellings make it feel like a home away from home. We love to watch the Elk pass through the Valley morning and night through the large kitchen window or while sitting in the hot tub. Although the activities on the Ranch and in the area are endless, we had a wonderful time snowshoeing and taking in the scenery. This will always be a favourite of ours and will certainly be back in the future. - The Dumont Family

Returning to “The Ranch” for family fun!

  • 5 of 5

Watching a flowing creek and Elk herds over coffee in the kitchen is a favourite peaceful time. Lots of room in this beautiful ranch style lodge. Family time over games, food, the hot tub and the horses are some of our favourite things.

Highly recommend this peaceful eden. Just a short distance to the mountain makes it a perfect get away.

Winter Wonderland

  • 5 of 5

We were back again for another post Christmas getaway with our family and although very frosty outside we all had a marvelous time. I was surprised when Jason mentioned some upgrades as I could not fathom any way to improve on perfection !! The work he and Bill did on the bathroom, awning and driveway was another example of their desire to surpass customer expectations. We could not have had a better R&R escape.

Many thanks,

Arnie (Calgary)
