Photos and Description of the Silver City vacation cottage rental

Lovingly furnished two-bedroom cottage with mountain views

This two-bedroom cottage has been lovingly outfitted with antiques, family treasures, whimsical repurposed items, and local art.

In-Town Retreat. This quiet home sleeps four, with fully outfitted kitchen, bath, and two bedrooms. Its 20’x20’ living room features desert colors and family antiques, games and a game table, sofa, recliner, chaise, television with free Netflix, Bose radio, excellent internet and wireless service, a telescope to explore clear, dark night skies, and art and crafts by local artists.

One bedroom has twin beds and a small office that could well be a writer’s retreat or artist’s den; laptop computer and printer available upon request. The second bedroom includes a king-sized bed and crawfoot antique dresser. The kitchen is decorated in vibrant Southwestern colors with stove, refrigerator, microwave, appliances, dishes, pots and pans, a small wine bar, and a prized family chrome dinette.

Enjoy the mountains, village landscapes, and ever-changing sky from six panorama windows that flood the rooms with shimmering New Mexico light. The area lures more than 300 species of birds, which you can watch in the “bird tree” just outside your kitchen table. Explore unspoiled terrain along hill-top walking paths nearby.

The interior of this decades-old home has been completely renovated, with central heat and air, ceiling fans, many extras, and careful attention to detail. All on one level, this cottage is handicap-friendly and fitted with grab bars and other safety features.

Silver City: Art Meets West. This faux-adobe casita (small house) is on a hillside a mile from the historic downtown of Silver City – a frontier mining town in southwestern New Mexico, where free-spirit artists now celebrate the blended cultures of native peoples, Latinos, and the Old West.

At elevation 6000 feet, the town of Silver City is cradled in low mountains along the Southern Continental Divide. It is home to about 10,000 people. Ranching and copper mining are pillars of the local economy.

Countless murals and art displays embellish the city in places such as Penny Park, where children and guiding artists are erecting stunning tile and mosaic handprints of generations of children in a dynamic explosion of creativity.

Western New Mexico University includes the WNMU Museum that houses the world’s largest collection of Mimbres pottery, preserving knowledge and culture of the Mimbreno Indians who inhabited this valley as early as 750 A.D. The nearby Gila Cliff Dwellings bear testimony to Mogollon occupation in the 1200s. Mining of abundant mineral resources dates back to Spanish colonists in the early 1800s, and the town boomed after the silver was discovered in 1870, giving the city its name.

Its 360-day sunshine and adventurous culture makes the area a center for renewable energy and alternate construction, such as homes made of adobe, rammed earth, straw bales, recycled tires, and earthship designs. Consistently rated as one of the nation’s best places to visit, live, or retire, Silver City is known as a place of four gentle seasons, well sited among the Chihuahuan high desert, tall-pine mountains, and vast wilderness preserves collectively known as the Gila.

Silver City is the gateway to the Gila, which includes the 3.3-million acre Gila National Forest and Aldo Leopold Wilderness Area – the largest uninhabited region in the lower 48 states, prized by sportsmen and people who seek to escape to nature.

Special events. Each year Silver City hosts many fiestas, festivals, performances, and sporting events, such as:

• April’s New Mexico Southwest Food Festival

• May’s Tour of the Gila five-day stage cycling race and Cowboy Poetry and Blues festivals

• September’s Gila River festival and gem/mineral show

• October’s Day of the Dead and Weekend at the Galleries

• December’s Victorian Christmas and New Mexico Tamale Fiesta
