The Tunnel Hill estate was aptly named by a former owner, retired Canadian army officer Colonel John Rockingham, and references the unique tunnel that he had constructed on the property; allowing "the Colonel" to drive his beloved army jeep through the hillside and down to the beach.
Today the tunnel is a modern marvel, with pathway and lighting, and is a delight to all.
It provides easy access to the level, private beach below.
The Tunnel Hill oceanfront estate is conveniently located just a short distance from two of the main entrances to Qualicum Beach. Keep right; on scenic Island Highway West (#19A Oceanside route) and exit down the private 1/4 mile, forest-lined drive which opens into a bright, sunny enclave with Tunnel Hill Cottage directly in view.
Tunnel Hill Cottage is a spacious 2 storey, 4 bedroom home. It was the original residence, on this two home estate property, and sits at the edge of the hillside with expansive ocean views.
Fully renovated but retaining much of its rustic charm; original old-growth Douglas fir floors, large stone fireplace and wood burning stove.
Tunnel Hill Cottage even has two hand-carved, Western red cedar totem poles that were specially commissioned by a former owner and which welcome you to the bright, ocean view dining room.
Your family and friends will immediately feel at home here.
Tunnel Hill Cottage is a newly furnished home; with large living room, separate dining room, fully equipped kitchen and two bathrooms. Four, generous size bedrooms easily accommodate six to eight guests.
The living room, dining room and principal bedroom all have lovely ocean views.
On the north side of the home there is an ocean view deck and on the south side a stone patio with a barbecue and outdoor table & chairs.
In the dining room a large, round table is perfect for those friends and family gatherings.
On the Tunnel Hill property, you will enjoy park-like grounds, with plenty of room for a game of bocce ball, croquet or soccer; 1/2 basketball court, secluded garden retreat and ample, convenient parking.
The 3 1/2 acre Tunnel Hill estate includes woods, grassed areas (young deer are often seen feeding), a hillside garden and the tunnel access to level, walk-on-beach.
The beach is "picture perfect"-----with 180 degree views to the east and west and across the Strait of Georgia (Salish Sea) to the Coast Mountains. The shoreline is pebbled but with level, easy access for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding.
And at low tide you can walk for miles on the beautiful, sand beach or explore the ocean tide pools. There is always something new to discover.
Or you can set off in one of the 2 kayaks available for guest use. Adventure awaits.
In the early evening, the sunsets are spectacular.
And later, you will want to gather around the large, beachfront fire pit with its cedar log benches-----perfect for an evening campfire and marshmallow roast.
